Toothgrinder Premiere New Song “The Silence Of A Sleeping WASP”

Toothgrinder have premiered a new song titled “The Silence Of A Sleeping WASP.” This track is from the band’s new album “I AM,” which will be released on October 11.

Justin Payne Matthews commented:

“‘The Silence of a Sleeping WASP‘ is a lyrical sequel to our song ‘The Shadow‘ from our last album Phantom Amour. There is so much that surrounds Carl Jung‘s concept of the shadow that has to deal with addiction and alcoholism. I absolutely knew that I had to write another song to commemorate the concept for the new album. I believe that humans, over time through evolution, have developed an area of the brain that connects all of us. A hive mind or a ‘spiritual’ gland, if you will. I believe it hums and radiates a frequency, but when we shut it down and keep it silent, the darkness can escape the shadow self.

I do not want to go into another long-winded rant, but those who have heard the last two songs we have released from ‘I AM‘ and have read my passages know what this whole record is about. I want to keep this about us — those suffering and willing to change for the better. If anyone is in the throes of alcoholism, addiction and/or co-dependency, please get in contact with me at justinpaynerecovery@gmail.com. I love you all!”

Toothgrinder Premiere “My Favorite Hurt” Music Video

Toothgrinder have premiered a new video for their new song “My Favorite Hurt.” This track is from the band’s new album “I AM,” which will be released on October 11.

Justin Payne Matthews commented:

“‘My Favorite Hurt‘ digs deeper into the relationships I have destroyed while in the throws of alcoholism and addiction. There is this dark place I have found myself many times throughout my life where I am always reaching for that next high and that next adrenaline rush. I am looking for anything to keep the wall between fantasy and reality hidden.”

“The problem is while I selfishly seek out pleasure in all forms, there is an endless amount of destruction I leave in my path. People I love more than anything turn to nothing more than a means to an end. It’s a crippling mind fuck that overtime manipulates itself into a psychosis.

I am addicted to people, affection of all kinds, newness, the ego and most of all the ebb and flow of pleasure and pain. I think I can trace back these thought patterns to age 5 or 6, little things that make so much sense now, but could not be brought to the surface for so long.”

“I have found solitude in true love and meaningful connection. I never want to intentionally hurt anyone again, and for those I have, I am deeply sorry. ‘My Favorite Hurt‘ is the light born from the death of the shadow. I expose myself to help others, because if I continue to live a lie and hide the truth, I can never be my true self.”

Toothgrinder Premiere New Song “I AM”

Toothgrinder have premiered a new song titled “I AM.” This is the title track of the band’s new album, which will be released on October 11.

“I AM” Track Listing:

01. “The Silence Of A Sleeping WASP”
02. “ohmymy”
03. “My Favorite Hurt”
04. “No Tribe”
05. “no surrender in The House Of Leaves”
06. “shiVer”
07. “The New Punk Rock”
08. “too soft for the scene, TOO MEAN FOR THE GREEN”
09. “Can Ü Live Today?”
10. “The Fire Of June”
11. “I AM”

Justin Matthews said the following about the new record:

“‘I AM‘… a mantra, a prayer, a mediation, a belief, a value, an all encompassing way of life. The title speaks of unity and presence. Becoming comfortable in one’s own skin. To endure whatever life throws at you with grace and gratitude. To love the ones who surround you and accept the things you can’t control. “I AM…” two of the most powerful words, for what you put after them shape your reality.

All of my life I have felt out of place, left out, a ghost, a phantom, a whisper in a sea of noise. I covered those deafening screams with abuse. Abusing others, friends, family, strangers, and most of all myself. I hurt the ones I love while still loving the one’s I hurt. I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t dream, I couldn’t bleed, I couldn’t breathe. I have yet to right my wrongs, but I hope to start with a song.

The anger, the tension, the narcissism, the callousness, the ego were nothing but amplified in my previous words. The despair was covered up in anger and ego, the void was filled with things, all types of things. Bright things, dark things, shiny things, needless things, but never the right thing, never the real thing.

I do my best to traverse through the negative and reach out a loving hand to those in need. This record’s words give hope rather than facade. This record’s words speak truth rather than perceived truth. This record exposes myself and the lies I have told myself and other’s. If I could accomplish one thing with this record, it would be to help one person in need. One person struggling with alcoholism, addiction, depression, anxiety, loss, guilt, shame, delusion, denial, perfectionism, co-dependency, suicidal thoughts and the list goes on. I am an open book, reach out to me with whatever you are struggling with, I have most likely been there.

We traverse the dark, we traverse the light, but by the end of the record we breathe. This is who “I AM.” This is who we are. I speak my mind, sometimes the shadow, sometimes my plight. If there is one word that can describe this record it is love. Not the facade, but the kind that cuts wood and carries water.

Like many fly fishermen in western Montana where the summer days are almost Arctic in length, I often do not start fishing until the cool of the evening. Then in the Arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise. Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of those rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. “I AM” haunted by waters. — Norman MacLean
