  • RED Part Ways With Vocalist Michael Barnes, Announce Tour

RED have parted ways with vocalist Michael Barnes. The singer left the group to “to focus on his family.” Despite this, the band will be hitting the road with Ra, Kingdom Collapse, and Twist It this spring.

Bassist Randy Armstrong and guitarist Anthony Armstrong said the following:

“You’ve all been wondering what’s going on. We’ve been getting your messages and your emails and I just want to thank you guys for your love and support. I can tell you we’re all happy and healthy and that’s the good news.

The bad news is about a year ago now Mike Barnes, our lead singer, approached us and said that he’d like to step away from RED permanently to focus on his family. And after 19 years, going on 20 years this year, it’s something that we completely understand. We’ve given up a lot to be out there on the road doing what we love, but our families have also sacrificed and given up so much to allow us to be on the road, so it’s something that we completely understand and we will honor and respect his decision.

We had an amazing 19 year run together and we’ve been friends since we were in third grade so we love Mike very much and we look forward to what he does next. We’ll love and cherish him forever. These moments we’ve made on the road with Michael are countless. There’s just so many things we’ve done in the last 20 years. So we love Michael so much and we’re gonna miss him.

Losing a lead singer is difficult. We did a lot os soul searching and we are not going anywhere guys. Anthony and I have decided that we’re going to continue without him and I can tell you some more awesome news. Dan Johnson is back on drums after a four year hiatus and while we’re looking for a new lead singer, for the time being AJ Reingardt of the band OHKAYA is filling in on vocals.

We’re gonna come out and do the 20th anniversary of ‘End of Silence’ tour this May and June. And some more awesome news is Mike’s gonna come back and do one last show Friday night June 5th in Dallas, Texas. We’re gonna play through End of Silence and all the other songs that you guys love and you’ve got one more chance to see all of us together. We’re gonna celebrate that night and say farewell to Michael and be in one of our favorite cities in the country to tour in and just have an awesome night.”

  • Annihilator’s Jeff Waters Announces New Amerikan Kaos Album “The Sheeple Swing”

Amerikan Kaos, the project featuring Annihilator’s Jeff Waters, will be releasing a new album, titled “The Sheeple Swing,” on March 31. The first single, “(I Won) The Hottie Lottery,” can be found below:

    “The Sheeple Swing” track listing:

    01. “(I Won) The Hottie Lottery”
    02. “Take Back”
    03. “(I Wish I Could) Talk To The Dead”
    04. “The Answer”
    05. “The Punk Rockers Were Right”
    06. “Operation Hollywood”
    07. “Last Breath”
    08. “War On Moron”
    09. “Traitor In The Family”
    10. “Trusted Thugs”

    Waters commented:

“We are at the third Amerikan Kaos record: exciting, very exciting! Once again I got to work with Stu Block on this, who did the previous record, ‘All That Jive’, which was and still is my favorite of the three. But here we go with the final installation of the trilogy, tied for second best Amerikan Kaos record with the first one: ‘Armageddon Boogie’. I hope you enjoy this.

It has a slightly different sound and, as I’ve said before, I wanted to try different instruments and different styles. This one was a little bit quicker written and recorded than the previous, probably about two weeks quicker than the other ones. Stu and I said, ‘Let’s just go in and do something a little more raw.’ I did add some nice production and tracks to some songs and parts, but they sound was generally more live. The theme for this one, I’d say a good three or four songs sort of slightly touching on politics, in a common sense way perspective.

And then there’s some pretty cool topics I covered about, and one of those that stands out to me would be ‘The Punk Rockers Were Right’. It’s kind of a fun song about how when I was back in high school, I was noticing that the punk rockers would always have shirts and yell these political things about the environment and politics and corruption, and I just ignored it. And I was doing my metal thing for decades until I finally realized in my 50s that they were right. While we were talking about cars, girls, metal and aggression (which is great),they were talking about corruption and politics and how the systems work. And that turns out that’s also an important outlet and important subject. So yeah, punk rockers were right.

And I also have some little more personal things in there and songs like ‘Traitor In The Family’ and ‘Take Back’. ‘Take Back’ is about reminiscing about the days before the main computer electronics came out and how people would just socialize more, have more conversations, look at each other more and talk more. But it’s just a reminiscing song. Happens when you get older. I think ‘Traitor In The Family’ is kind of self-explanatory.

And there’s lots of cool, cool ideas on this one, lyrically. And there’s a fun one, I think the track the record opens up with ‘The Hottie Lottery’, which I’m just having fun with it, right? In brackets ‘(I Won) The Hottie Lottery’ and of course it’s about a female. As always, on these records, I have quite a few songs about my wife, but this one is a fun one. It’s got a little, I won’t say Michael Jackson vibe because there’s no way you could compete or even get close to almost even a B level unless you’re Bruno Mars or one of these types of artists. But for this I wasn’t trying to be Michael Jackson, but I always liked the song ‘Enjoy Yourself’ by The Jacksons/Jackson Five? I can’t remember, but you know, Michael Jackson was always a favorite of mine and billions of others. A fun thing. I also love Las Vegas and casinos, so looks like I won the jackpot by meeting my wife is kind of the obvious meaning in that one.

Musically speaking, musician-wise first, I guess you would say, Stu was the pleasure of having, once again, on this record. Amazing to work with him. This time we knew each other and how we worked in the studio with ‘All That Jive’ and the ‘Metal II’ record by Annihilator.

Stu’s very prolific when it comes to vocal sounds and styles, and easy to work with. This time I was able to sort of ask him to do more of his own thing. Didn’t have to say as much to him as a producer. So that was fantastic. Let him loose a little bit. As always, I wrote everything, but I gave him a lot of leeway on what he wanted to do with it. Yeah.

As for backing vocals: I think on this record, we didn’t have anybody else on backing vocals except myself and my stepdaughter Ruby. She’s been on all three of the records doing girl voices or yelling or party scenes or things like that. And, of course, Bob Katsionis on the keyboards, piano, that kind of stuff. He’s always been an asset to this project. Incredible talent.

This was a great way to end the trilogy. Fantastic way! The first one was more 1980’s rock and roll, heavy metal style. And second one was a little bit more hard rock with a trace of everything from dance and a little prog and keyboards and, you know, really more serious songwriting I think on the second one.

I think on this third one, ‘The Sheeple Swing’, which by the way, I’ll go back to saying why that title, it was misread by the mastering guys, Ted Jensen’s people down at Sterling Sound in Nashville and misread by the gaming company that owns this trilogy. And I understand why, they thought it was ‘The People Swing’. But it actually is ‘The Sheeple Swing’.

If someone doesn’t know what ‘sheeple’ means, I think I can tell you without getting into detail: sheep people. I think you understand the meaning of that one. And it’s not necessarily political. It’s just about people going with the flow without questioning anything and might not always be the right way to do it. You should always question things and use common sense. So, and again, this third final record had to have a dance in the title. You have the ‘Armageddon Boogie’, you have ‘All That Jive’ and of course you have ‘The Sheeple Swing’.

Thank you very much. We hope you enjoy this one. It’s much different than the first two but it fits in perfectly.”

  • Sharon Osbourne Says Orchestral Black Sabbath Cover Shows Will Feature “State-Of-The-Art Graphics”

During a recent appearance at MIDEM in Cannes, France, the late Ozzy Osbourne’s wife and manager Sharon Osbourne and promoter Andy Copping further discussed their plans for orchestral shows featuring the music of Black Sabbath. According to Sharon, the concerts will include “state-of-the-art graphics and [a] state-of-the-art sound system.”

    Sharon said the following:

“Ozzy’s keyboard player, Adam Wakeman, his father’s [YES keyboard legend] Rick Wakeman. And, actually, he came up with the idea of doing a classical version of SABBATH. And then we said, ‘Great.’ He’s converted the music into classical music, and then I said, ‘We need guitar players to come in at some point. You need that.’ So we’re gonna bring in about four guitar players to play together. And so people see the original version and the classical in one night. And we’re gonna do it with state-of-the-art graphics and state-of-the-art sound system, go to major cities, pick up the local philharmonic.”

    Copping added:

“We’re thinking about launching it in the U.K., hopefully at the Royal Albert Hall. And that will be, obviously, a great springboard for having it as a touring entity. It’s actually very, very exciting.

It’s interesting. People’s first thoughts are, ‘BLACK SABBATH and orchestra — is that gonna work?’ But they said that about [Birmingham Royal Ballet’s ‘Black Sabbath – The Ballet’]. I mean, ballet and BLACK SABBATH music — is that gonna work? I went to the show, the ballet show. It’s unbelievable how it’s made that transition. I didn’t know what I was gonna see when I got there, but there’s literally ballet going on and there’s this thunderous soundtrack, the BLACK SABBATH music. And there’s interviews with the band going on in the background. It’s very hard to explain, but if you get the opportunity to see that, that is well worth going to see. And the orchestral side will be another step further on from that. It’s very, very exciting.”

  • Sharon Osbourne Says Ozzfest Will “Absolutely” Return In 2027

During a recent appearance at MIDEM in Cannes, France, the late Ozzy Osbourne’s wife and longtime manager Sharon Osbourne confirmed that Ozzfest will be returning in 2027. She said the following:

“Yes, absolutely. Yeah, we’re gonna do it. Well, the last one we did was 2018. It was just a month before Ozzy got sick, and that was at the Forum in L.A. And there was no plans to stop it. We were still gonna do it, but Ozzy couldn’t. And Ozzy and I would talk about it, and he’d say, ‘Do you think Ozzfest would work without me?’ And I’m, like, ‘Yeah, it’s a brand. It will work without you.’ And he said, ‘We should do it.’”

  • Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan: “I Think That Rock Has Been Purposely Dialed Down In The Culture”

During a new episode of “The Magnificent Others” podcast, Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins) talked about the current state of rock music with Conrad Flynn. For his part, Corgan believes “rock has been purposely dialed down in the culture.”

    Corgan said the following:

“I think, and I will say it overtly, I think that rock has been purposely dialed down in the culture. [It began in the] late ’90s. I think the first, and again this gets wizard behind the curtain, right? Somebody’s going to say, ‘Well, how do you know who was the wizard behind the curtain?’ All I know is I saw the gravity shift ,okay?

If you were at MTV, or around MTV in 1997-98, suddenly they decided rock was out, when rock was very, very high up in the thing. And it was replaced by rap. They immediately changed the way… their standards and practices immediately shifted. So now that things that weren’t allowed were suddenly allowed, people were waving guns. Okay, so some people assert that the CIA was involved in all that. Again, above my paygrade. But I saw it happen. I did witness it happen.

And of course great music came out of it. So it’s not like, it’s not a barren wasteland where something was pushed in that replaced something. Qualitative things and great artists came in, but there was this overt shift. I saw it happen. And then now as you pointed out rap seems to be waning in terms of its cultural influence. Pop is completely dominant.

Rock is probably the most dominant ticket-selling thing in the western world, and yet there’s almost no representation of rock in culture. So why do we have that schism? I think they purposely dialed down the ability of rock stars to have a voice in the culture. Or… those who exist within the ecosystem are basically… they know they’ll color between the lines so they don’t have to worry about that.”

  • Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl Gives Turnstile A Shout Out During Manchester, UK Show

During Foo Fighters’ February 27 show at the O2 Ritz in Manchester, England, vocalist/guitarist Dave Grohl gave Turnstile a shout out. He said the following:

“Tonight I’m gonna dedicate [‘My Hero‘] to a band who I think is great and who might be here tonight in the audience — I’m not sure. But I’m very happy, coming from an old school, hardcore punk rock background on the East Coast in Washington DC, our neighbors in Washington, DC were from a little town called Baltimore, Maryland — not far, it’s only 45 minutes. So whenever I see someone from Baltimore doing something really great and enjoying the successes of their hard-earned work, I like to shout ’em out. So I’m gonna… let’s dedicate this one to the fellas, and ladies, in Turnstile. Let’s give this one up for Turnstile.”
