Smashing Pumpkins Planning To Release New Double Album This Year

During a recent interview with Tennessean, Billy Corgan offered an update on the new Smashing Pumpkins album. The singer said the band currently have 21 songs set to appear on the effort and that it will be released as a double record this year.

Corgan said the following:

“When we got back together with James, we went in with Rick Rubin and did eight songs. It was put out as a formal album, but I said at the time — and I did mean it — in my eyes, it wasn’t an album. We didn’t approach it like we’ve approached every other album we’d ever done, which is more like making a movie.

In many ways, this is the first real album [since the reunion] where we’ve hunkered down and made a classic, ‘Let’s throw it all at the wall and see what happens’ type of Pumpkins record. I’ve been working on it for over a year. It currently is at 21 songs, and we’re going to release it as a double this year.

This is the first album since the album that came out in 2000, ‘Machina’, where me, James and Jimmy worked on something for a very long time. It’s got a greater conceptual base, and it’s probably a wider swath of music. The last one was kind of like, ‘Let’s just jump in, record some stuff real fast, and let it be what it is,’ … so I’m excited about this, because we’re kind of back in the lane of taking a risk, and trying to bring something new to the table, as opposed to just aping what we’re known for.”

Billy Corgan Working On 21 Songs For New Smashing Pumpkins Album

During a recent interview with 102.9 The Buzz, Billy Corgan revealed that he currently has 21 songs in the works for Smashing Pumpkins’ new album. The frontman said the following:

“It’s currently 21 songs. I’ve been working on it for over a year. It’s pretty different — in a good way, I think. Everybody that’s heard it likes it a lot, so that’s a good sign. We’re gonna do some touring. We’re playing a big festival in Atlanta — I think in April or May — Shaky Knees. I’m not sure we’re playing Nashville this year. Actually, I think we might. I might be giving a secret away. We might be doing a little ‘surprisey’ gig soon.”

Don’t miss the chance to hear it for yourself before others tell you what my songs are or aren’t.

There is a reason I trust you, the people who support me day in and day out, to decide whether or not my efforts are worthy.

We live in a different world now, where an artist can speak directly to you without the filter of mass media shaping your heart and opinions before you’ve even had a chance to decide whether this music speaks to you. And this is absolutely an album from my heart. And so is the new SP, which will be out soon enough.

I can’t thank you enough for the support I’ve been given to make moments like this possible.

Soon, we’ll have details on how you can order a vinyl copy, of which there will be 2 editions; the Zuzu’s version being limited and having more in it.

Lastly, please give love to the artist who made the statues on the front cover, @avassfez and shot the cover and all images within, @jennyfaridathastrom. Now, go pre-subscribe for this record. OUT TO YOU Nov 22”

Smashing Pumpkins Have “Hundreds Of Songs” In The Vaults Ready For Release

According to Blabbermouth, Billy Corgan recently confirmed to Beats 1 that Smashing Pumpkins have a bunch of previously unreleased music that they want to release. In fact, the band have so much that the frontman says they “could literally never record another song and have a release every two months for the next 20 years.”

Corgan said the following:

“I’m really excited by the re-rise of the vinyl record shop and the fact that there is there is this beautiful balance now between vinyl releases and streaming services. We’re going to just start unloading the archives — and we have archives for decades.”

When asked how much material they have, Corgan said “You can’t even imagine,” while drummer Jimmy Chamberlin added that there were “hundreds of [finished] songs.”

Corgan continued:

“It’s insane how much work there is. We could literally never record another song and have a release every two months for the next 20 years. Easy. There’s alternate versions, there’s live versions, there’s acoustic versions. So we’re going to actually kill people with content.”

Before they start going to the archives, the group will release their new album “Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun.” on November 16.
