Metallica’s Kirk Hammett On Music Streaming: “We Warned Everyone That This Was Gonna Happen”

During a recent interview with Classic Rock, Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett reflected on the band’s 2000 lawsuit against Napster and the current state of music streaming. He said the following:

“We warned everyone that this was gonna happen. We warned everyone that the music industry was gonna lose eighty percent of its net worth, power and influence. When these monumental shifts come, you just either fucking rattle the cage and get nothing done or you move forward. There’s definitely a new way for getting music out there, but it isn’t as effective as the music industry pre-Napster. But we’re stuck with it. There needs to be some sort of midway point where the two come together, or another completely new model comes in.”

Metallica’s Kirk Hammett Premieres “High Plains Drifter” Video

Kirk Hammett (Metallica) has premiered a new video for his song “High Plains Drifter.” This track is from his new solo EP “Portals,” which will be released on April 23.

Hammett previously said the following about the song, which was named after a 1973 Clint Eastwood film:

“[It] was not meant to be specifically music for that film, but it was once it was written, I immediately thought it conveyed the same sentiment as the film, so the piece was christened accordingly.”

He also added:

“The music for ‘High Plains Drifter‘ initially came from a flamenco piece I had written. It was a two-and-a-half-minute piece, and I really liked it, but it was one of those riffs that would be hard to integrate into Metallica. I knew I wanted to do something with it, even though it came out spontaneously. I had been sitting outside messing around with a flamenco acoustic guitar I’d just bought, and it flowed out in the moment. I was determined it would have a life. It would have its moment.”
