Tom Petty’s Family Calls Out Trump For Unauthorized Use Of “I Won’t Back Down” At Tulsa Rally

The family of the late Tom Petty have blasted Donald Trump for using “I Won’t Back Down” during his rally in Tulsa, OK yesterday (June 20). They said “Trump was in no way authorized to use this song to further a campaign that leaves too many Americans and common sense behind.”

The following statement was issued:

“Tom Petty’s song “I Won’t Back Down” was used today at Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Tulsa, OK.

Trump was in no way authorized to use this song to further a campaign that leaves too many Americans and common sense behind.

Both the late Tom Petty and his family firmly stand against racism and discrimination of any kind. Tom Petty would never want a song of his used for a campaign of hate. He liked to bring people together.

Tom wrote this song for the underdog, for the common man and for EVERYONE. We want to make it clear that we believe everyone is free to vote as they like, think as they like, but the Petty family doesn’t stand for this. We believe in America and we believe in democracy. But Donald Trump is not representing the noble ideals of either. We would hate for fans that are marginalized by this administration to think we were complicit in this usage.

Watch Anthrax, Butcher Babies, & Suicidal Tendencies Members Cover Tom Petty’s “Yer So Bad” While In Quarantine

Charlie Benante (Anthrax), Carla Harvey (Butcher Babies), and Roberto “Ra” Diaz (Suicidal Tendencies) have shared footage of themselves performing Tom Petty’s “Yer So Bad” while in quarantine. You can watch that below:

Benante commented:

“We miss you, Tom Petty! One of the American greats! Not only a stellar multi instrumentalist but the king of story telling through his lyrics. His songs are familiar, yet they never sound dated. Hearing them after awhile just reminds you of how good he was! What you may not know about Petty was that he was an advocate for fair treatment of musical artists and fans alike. He fought the record industry to avoid his contract be transferred, saying he didn’t want to be “bought and sold like a piece of meat,” and later fought to keep the prices of his albums down so that everyone could afford him. This song has always been a favorite of mine, the lyrics, the Jangly guitars, his voice… he and the Heartbreakers wrote some catchy stuff. This one features the beautiful Carla Harvey of the Butcher Babies and Ra Diaz from Suicidal Tendencies, they rule! Thanks to Andy Lagis for mixing and Dima Levanchuk for video editing – I 💜 Tom Petty”

Witherfall Premiere New Video For Their Cover Of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down”

Witherfall have premiered a new video for their cover of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down.” This track is from the band’s new EP “Vintage,” which will be released on March 22. That effort will feature covers, acoustic tracks, and more.

The group commented:

“During the final writing sessions of “A Prelude to Sorrow”, Joseph Michael and Jake Dreyer stumbled upon doing a darker version of “I Won’t Back Down” by Tom Petty. The song was recorded during the Prelude Sessions at Boogie Tracks Recording studio (featured in the music video) in Jake Dreyer’s hometown of Panama City, Florida. A few weeks after the record was finished Hurricane Michael, a category 5 and largest hurricane to hit the Florida Panhandle in recorded history came and destroyed Panama City, Mexico Beach and Boogie Tracks Studios. Also destroyed was the dock that was home to many wine soaked writing sessions for both Nocturnes and Prelude. The dock can be seen during both “Ode To Despair” and “I Won’t Back Down” solo sections. The Before and After is a haunting reminder that nothing is permanent. We hope this song and video serve as a tribute to the Florida Panhandle and the perseverance of the people living there in rebuilding their communities.”

Tom Petty’s Cause Of Death Revealed To Be Accidental Overdose On Pain Medication

It has officially been confirmed that Tom Petty’s death was a result of accidental overdose on pain medication. A statement from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner said Petty was taking various medications including Fentanyl, oxycodone, Xanax, Restoril, and Celexa. The drugs were prescribed for emphysema, knee problems, and a fractured hip, which eventually turned into a full on break with unbearable pain. Petty was found unconscious, unable to breath, and in full cardiac arrest at his Mailbu, CA home on October 1, 2017. EMTs rushed him to the hospital, but he was taken off life support after no brain activity was detected. He died on October 2, 2017. R.I.P.

Petty’s family issued the following statement:

Our family sat together this morning with the Medical Examiner – Coroner’s office and we were informed of their final analysis that Tom Petty passed away due to an accidental drug overdose as a result of taking a variety of medications.

Unfortunately Tom’s body suffered from many serious ailments including emphysema, knee problems and most significantly a fractured hip.

Despite this painful injury he insisted on keeping his commitment to his fans and he toured for 53 dates with a fractured hip and, as he did, it worsened to a more serious injury.

On the day he died he was informed his hip had graduated to a full on break and it is our feeling that the pain was simply unbearable and was the cause for his over use of medication.

We knew before the report was shared with us that he was prescribed various pain medications for a multitude of issues including Fentanyl patches and we feel confident that this was, as the coroner found, an unfortunate accident.

As a family we recognize this report may spark a further discussion on the opioid crisis and we feel that it is a healthy and necessary discussion and we hope in some way this report can save lives. Many people who overdose begin with a legitimate injury or simply do not understand the potency and deadly nature of these medications.

On a positive note we now know for certain he went painlessly and beautifully exhausted after doing what he loved the most, for one last time, performing live with his unmatchable rock band for his loyal fans on the biggest tour of his 40 plus year career. He was extremely proud of that achievement in the days before he passed.

We continue to mourn with you and marvel at Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ incredible positive impact on music and the world. And we thank you all for your love and support over the last months.

Thank you also for respecting the memory of a man who was truly great during his time on this planet both publicly and privately.

We would be grateful if you could respect the privacy of the entire Heartbreaker family during this difficult time.

Heart’s Ann Wilson To Pay Tribute To Chris Cornell, Tom Petty, Etc. On New Album

Heart’s Ann Wilson is working on a new tribute album which will honor late musicians such as Chris Cornell, Tom Petty, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, and more. She said the following about that:

“I am most excited about the recording endeavor we have just begun that has a working title, ‘PDG’ (project dead guys). It’s a project very dear to me — a collection of songs by artists who have departed in the last several years: Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, Tom Petty, and Chris Cornell to name a few. To honor these great artists is my deepest pleasure and Mike Flicker (Original Heart producer; Dreamboat Annie, Magazine, Little Queen, Dog and Butterfly, & Bebe le Strange etc.) is working with me on this new record. It is thrilling work and I can’t wait for you to hear what we are doing!”
