Watch Alice In Chains, Anthrax, Mastodon, & Metal Allegiance Members Cover Soundgarden’s “Rusty Cage”

Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante, Alice In Chains singer William DuVall, Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher, and Metal Allegiance bassist Mark Menghi recently joined forces for a quarantine cover of Soundgarden’s “Rusty Cage.” You can see footage of that below:

Benante commented:

“Rusty Cage…first song off of Badmotorfinger and a Damn Good one at that! This song makes me wanna drive fast.

I was a @soundgarden fan as soon as I heard ‘hunted down’. I then heard the FOPP ep on which they had covered an @ohioplayers song (Honey was a great Album) and I was Hooked. I saw them numerous times from 1988-89 to playing festivals with them a few years ago. I always thought they had ‘it’: they were tight but loose,up and down,in and out of tune, heavy and soft, always unique. I always loved the way @Chriscornellofficial sang, His voice was so Recognizable. I saw them at the Armory in New York and he came out and did an acapella version of Beth by @kissonline , I got goosebumps.

We are celebrating the music they created with this version of Rusty Cage. When @billy_butterslax , @markmenghi, @williamduvallofficial and I decided to Jam this one out it was because it moved us when we first heard it and dammit, it still does!

Hope you all enjoy it and Take the time to think what Good Music does to your soul.

Thank you to @dlevanchuk and @tom.w.tapley . Love to #kimthayil #mattcameron #benshepherd .”

Watch Anthrax, Metal Allegiance, Etc. Members Cover Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon”

Charlie Benante (Anthrax), Alex Skolnick (Testament, Metal Allegiance), Mark Menghi (Metal Allegiance), Jennifer Cella (Beauty In The Machine), and Randy McStine have teamed up for a quarantine cover of Fleetwood Mac‘s “Rhiannon.“ Benante said the following about that:

“I’ve been a fan of #fleetwoodmac for many years, there is something about that #rumors lineup that just excites me . When @markmenghi asked me about doing this song I immediately was down. It’s personal to him and I understood why.”

Watch Anthrax, Death Angel, & Metal Allegiance Members Cover Mother Love Bone’s “Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns”

Charlie Benante (Anthrax), Mark Osegueda (Death Angel), and Mark Menghi (Metal Allegiance) have joined forces for a quarantine cover of Mother Love Bone‘s “Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns.“ You can check that out below:

Benante commented:

“What if? I always ask that when I listen to Mother Love Bone, Would Andrew Wood have sung “Release” or “Why go“? Would that TEN album have been the next MLB album? I remember sitting in Lonn Friend’s @instadude74 office when he got the Call that Andrew Wood had Died. I couldn’t believe it, WTF?? I thought that band was going to have a long career…well some of them did.

What A great album; to this day it’s one of my favorites. The Chloe/Crown Of Thorns song is a stand out, it’s so perfect. A few years ago I did a version of Chloe Dancer with Mark Osegueda @bonsloth and Mark Menghi @markmenghi at a @metalallegiance show. I think they both capture the feel and emotion on this song.

I always thought I never really finished or felt fulfilled and I wanted to do a better cover of it. Since I’ve been doing these jams this song has always been on my mind. I get goosebumps when I play it, it’s weird and emotional. I hope you Dig it! Thanks to @andylagis and @dlevanchuk for their awesome ears and eyes @roland.artists @ikguitarist @headrushfx @officialtamadrums @paistecymbals”

BPMD (Overkill, Vio-lence, Etc.) Share Video For Cover Of Aerosmith’s “Toys In The Attic”

BPMD, the band featuring Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth (Overkill), Phil Demmel (Vio-lence, ex-Machine Head), Mike Portnoy (ex-Dream Theater, etc.), and Mark Menghi (Metal Allegiance), have premiered a new video for their cover of Aerosmith’s “Toys In The Attic.” This track is from the band’s new covers album “American Made,“ which is set to be released on June 12.

Bobby Blitz commented:

“I remember waaaaaaaaaaay back when Overkill formed, we were cutting our teeth on covers as I was finding my way around the mic. The Aerosmith covers were right in my wheelhouse, so when Mike [Portnoy] picked ‘Toys’ to cover, I was like… ‘Hell Yea’!”

Phil Demmel added:

“It was tricky because Aerosmith have two guitarists, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, playing different things. So, as one guitar player, I had to pick a medium place between the two that sounded good. I thrashed it up a little by adding a lot of down picking and some gallops and triplets.”

“American Made” Track Listing:

01. “Wang Dang Sweet Poontang” (Ted Nugent cover)
02. “Toys In The Attic” (Aerosmith cover)
03. “Evil” (Cactus/Willie Dixon cover)
04. “Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers” (ZZ Top cover)
05. “Saturday Night Special” (Lynyrd Skynyrd cover)
06. “Tattoo Vampire” (Blue Öyster Cult cover) (feat. Buck Dharma)
07. “D.O.A.” (Van Halen cover)
08. “Walk Away” (James Gang cover)
09. “Never in My Life” (Mountain cover)
10. “We’re An American Band” (Grand Funk Railroad cover)

BPMD (Overkill, Vio-lence, Etc.) Sign With Napalm Records

BPMD, the band featuring Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth (Overkill), Phil Demmel (Vio-lence, ex-Machine Head), Mike Portnoy (ex-Dream Theater, etc.), and Mark Menghi (Metal Allegiance), have signed a worldwide deal with Napalm Records. As previously reported, the group’s debut album, which is tentatively titled “American Made,” will feature covers of tracks from the 1970s.

Menghi commented:

“We’re super excited about our first BPMD record. Last summer, I was inspired and came up with this crazy idea and here we are, not even a year later, and it’ll see the light of day in these very trying times. The planet needs something to feel good about, and I 100% whole-heartedly believe these tunes will do the trick. Buckle up and make way for BPMD…”

Ellsworth added:

“The BPMD sessions were very fun. They took us all back to our roots and even pre-roots. As it developed, we all realized it was something special, as did Napalm Records, with one listen!”

BPMD are currently scheduled to make their live debut at the Old Bridge Elks Lodge in New Jersey on May 30 as part of “Bulldozer Bash 5.” That event will benefit the Old Bridge Militia Foundation.

Mike Portnoy, Phil Demmel, Bobby Blitz, & Mark Menghi To Release “American Made” Covers Album Under The Name BPMD

During an appearance on “The Blairing Out With Eric Blair Show,” Phil Demmel (Vio-lence, ex-Machine Head) revealed that his new project with Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth (Overkill), Mike Portnoy (ex-Dream Theater, etc.), Mark Menghi (Metal Allegiance) will be called BPMD. The group plan to release a new covers album titled “American Made” later this year.

Demmel said the following:

“It’s called BPMD. So it’s Bobby Blitz, Mike Portnoy, Mark Menghi and Phil Demmel — BPMD. It’s all cover tunes from American bands of the ’70s. It’s called ‘American Made‘, [and it’s got songs from] ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, James Gang, Aerosmith, Grand Funk Railroad — all these cover tunes that we modernized them and not really thrashed them up, but we made kind of metal versions of them.

And we think we found maybe a label home, and we’re looking to put the record out here probably at the end of the first quarter, maybe beginning of second quarter. It’s all up in the air right now.”

He then added the following after being asked who came up with the idea:

“Mark Menghi did. He said he was around his campfire listening to a Skynyrd song, and he’s all, ‘Hey, I wanna record this and get some guys.’ And he called us up. I flew out to Portnoy’s house, and we had the songs we picked. Each of us picked two, and then we had two songs that were kind of band picks that we needed to do. And we flew out to Portnoy’s house in Pennsylvania. I flew in one day, did tracks, flew out the next day, went home and recorded guitar tracks and solos in a day. And the guys did their other tracks. We got it done pretty fucking quick.”

Demmel also revealed his favorite track from the effort:

“I’m gonna have to say… There’s a sleeper track. It’s a Blue Öyster Cult song called ‘Tattoo Vampire’ that I picked. And Buck Dharma from Blue Öyster Cult actually played on the song. And it’s got kind of a punky feel. ‘Cause the original track is kind of rock and roll, but Menghi or Portnoy had this idea to make it kind of a Ramones feel. So we picked it up. So, ‘Tattoo Vampire’ is my favorite.”

More Details Revealed For New Project Featuring Overkill, Ex-Machine Head, Etc. Members

During a recent interview with Underground’s Voice, Overkill’s Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth talked a bit about his new project with Phil Demmel (Vio-lence, ex-Machine Head), Mike Portnoy (Metal Allegiance, ex-Dream Theater, etc.), and Mark Menghi (Metal Allegiance). He said the following:

“It was a fun project. It was kind of a summertime hobby project. Phil, Mike, Mark Menghi from Metal Allegiance did a record called ‘Made In America – The 1970s‘, so we took American bands that were done in the ’70s and thrashed up the approach. Grand Funk [Railroad]’s ‘[We’re An] American Band‘; Mountain; Cactus; Blue Öyster Cult. We put the Machine Head, Sons Of Apollo, Metal Allegiance, Overkill spin on the whole thing. It’s a cool project.”

Metal Allegiance Announce West Coast Fifth Anniversary Dates

Metal Allegiance, the band featuring core members David Ellefson (Megadeth), Alex Skolnick (Testament), Mike Portnoy (Sons Of Apollo, ex-Dream Theater, etc.) and Mark Menghi, have announced some fifth anniversary shows with Superfix and Weapons Of Anew. The group will be joined by special guests Chuck Billy (Testament), John Bush (Armored Saint), Phil Demmel (ex-Machine Head) and Troy Sanders (Mastodon). Max Cavalera (Soulfly, etc.) will also perform at the Phoenix, AZ show and Steve “Zetro” Souza (Exodus) and Gary Holt (Exodus, Slayer) will perform at the San Francisco, CA show. Here’s the dates:

04/17 Phoenix, AZ – The Van Buren
04/18 Los Angeles, CA – The Belasco Theater
04/19 Las Vegas, NV – House Of Blues
04/20 San Francisco, CA – The Fillmore

Menghi said the following:

“Five years already? Geez… when I thought of the words ‘Metal Allegiance‘ in my local taco joint and the skeleton of a concept, I never imagined MA becoming what it has become. Only a few short months after that, we were on Motörhead‘s ‘Motorboat Cruise‘ and on that boat the future of MA as I knew it (well not at the time) is when everything changed as we thought ‘hey, lets write some music together’.

Well… 2 full-length albums, an EP and many memorable shows later we’re still intact and stronger than ever. I look forward to celebrating with everyone and hope to see many old faces and new ones at these special shows. Each gig is going to be different with some surprise guests planned for each city. In true MA fashion…Ya never know who is gonna show up?!?!”

Skolinick also commented:

“It’s hard to believe it’s been 5 years! While MA has had some memorable one off concerts recently, tour dates have been relatively rare due to schedules. Now the stars have aligned to make this run of shows possible, including a strong lineup that’s touring together for the first time, some great venues and very special guests. Come celebrate with us!”

Ellefson continued:

“Most bands barely survive one album and a tour. So to go from our debut all star jam on Motorboat in 2014, to having full length releases and accompanying world tour dates under our belt, five years has packed a big loud punch from Metal Allegiance. I think it shows that great music and friendship have always been at the heart of Metal Allegiance so this five year milestone finds us a perfect celebration for just that!”

Portnoy added:

“5 years of hanging, jamming, thrashing, ball crushing and ball busting with this wrecking crew! I love being able to write, record and perform this music with these guys…it’s always a blast!”
