“We’re Hurting” 5.29.2020 Richmond, VA. LET ME MAKE THIS VERY CLEAR: as a peace loving man who has seen & very regrettably been involved in violence myself in the past, I CANNOT CONDONE VIOLENCE- it only hurts us in the long run. BUT… I can UNDERSTAND it. Last night, I went out to document a protest in Richmond, VA, walking for a couple of hours with the people, shooting photos & trying to capture this moment in history- this is what I do as a photographer, in times good & bad. It was peaceful for the most part while I was there, but very shortly after I left, it kicked off & the rioting/violence started. There were a few cop cars & a city bus put to the torch, windows smashed (including small businesses, a few of which were black-owned- how does this help? It DOESN’T), & lots of spray paint. Tear gas/flash bangs were deployed. There were reports of gunshots (from the crowd, not the cops), but thank God no one died last night. And although I have had my problems with police before, I cannot just hate all cops- I know some good ones who do their best to serve & protect. But I also have NEVER had to worry that a cop might kill me because of the color of my skin. The violence you are seeing is the result of years & years of bottled up pain & fear, the only voice left when peaceful means don’t seem to be working. I texted a musician friend in LA last night who is a black man- I asked him how he & his family were. “We're okay. We're hurting. We're angry. But we’re okay.” The two words that stood out the most to me: WE’RE HURTING. When people hurt bad enough, for long enough, they lash out. So instead of just being another voice screaming “Racism is bad!” I want to ask you ALL: please think about a time you were hurt & scared- how did you react? I know that I myself have reacted VERY BADLY before when I was hurt & scared. All I really wanted was for someone to HEAR ME, to LISTEN, to CARE, to try to UNDERSTAND ME, to RECOGNIZE MY PAIN. There are A LOT of people who are very hurt & scared right now, & they have had ENOUGH. Things have to CHANGE, or the violence will continue. I will be staying in tonight- if you are going out, please- be peaceful. My heart hurts… 😞

Gathering my thoughts, my anger, my frustration and my warrior sense about what’s been going on in this country. It’s bigger than recent events it runs DEEP in our history! My heart is heavy, my soul is burdened but my determination to help and try to understand the big picture of the division we all are pushed into daily is strong. Yet another life taken and paraded on social media and the repercussions unfold. Is anger enough? What more can be done aside from post about it, write songs about it, live in fierce opposition to the persistent divide created because of it. I humbly ask what can be done? It’s not just the murder of George Floyd it’s the countless others that have died in a similar manner and many thousands that have died and never received media coverage. Our so called creed in this country a country that clams “liberty and justice for ALL” is under fire. How do you not react in anger in disgust and frustration?! I am “just a musician” and not a “political figure” but we are taking about HUMAN LIFE being taken. How do we NOT speak out against this wrong! It’s not about politics and I’m sick to my stomach seeing any one argue that point in any way! STOP using Black folks being murdered as an agenda to push politics!!! No, not all police are awful and murderous. In fact I know officers that are good people with the desire to actually serve and protect! So if you are one of those Good Cops use your voice now to show solidarity with citizens who are the victims of abuses of power! Just like me a white male is showing my solidarity to a people who have deep history and deep roots in the building and creating of the foundations and culture of this country. We need more unity and coming together to speak out and fight against WRONG! There is NO defending what continues to happen NONE. When heavily armed white skinned people can parade around in front of officers unharmed and unchecked and unarmed black folks are executed for the camera it sends a MESSAGE! Put aside ANY stupid political speculation about what is happening and lead with your mind. This should serve to UNITE us for the common good of us all NOT DIVIDE!

The fact that it took this long, and people had to resort to protesting and rioting in order to get some semblance of justice… is disgusting. It is the year 2020. We have to change as a human race. We need new leadership that will encourage and inspire unity and equality instead of division and violence. We as individuals need to practice kindness and love, not selfishness and hate. We are all living on this globe together. Treat others as you’d want to be treated and help where you can instead of hurt. And if you get your panties in a twist over the notion of LOVING ONE ANOTHER…then YOU are part of the problem. Let’s draw a hard line NOW! Out with the old dinosaur mentalities, and let’s start brand new, with new eyes to view the world as John Lennon imagined it. “Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people living for today Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people living life in peace, you You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope some day you'll join us And the world will be as one Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people sharing all the world, you You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope some day you'll join us And the world will be as one”

I was already upset watching #ahmausarbery being shot. Then watching the #georgefloyd video both gutted and enraged me to the point that it’s all I can think about. If you were unaffected by the video of the life leaving George’s face, there’s something wrong with you. After forty odd years of my life, I think things have actually gotten worse. If you don’t know, I am biracial. Growing up I experienced a great deal of racism. I watched my dad being racially profiled. Just two years ago I was racially profiled while on tour when two aggressive cops came to my hotel room because a front desk clerk told them a strange looking black woman with purple dreads seemed suspicious and must be a hooker. I don’t need sympathy for this…my point is that If someone that looks like me can be racially profiled so easily, imagine what black people go through on a daily basis and try to understand why there’s so much anger. It’s every dirty look, every “nigger” mumbled in their direction, every false accusation, every unwarranted pull over, all these videos of our brothers and sisters being murdered in cold blood building up to a boiling point. I heard someone say that these riots and protests are a public mourning. It gives me a little hope seeing so many different kinds of people mourning and protesting TOGETHER. THAT’S beautiful. The Looting on the other hand, makes me sick to my stomach. If you’re participating in that, you are an opportunist. A man died for that Louis Vuitton bag and those Nike shoes you just stole. You don’t give a shit about George. And maybe those big businesses can recover…but some small businesses that barely survived coronavirus definitely won’t survive being vandalized and looted now. Man, free stuff is cool but you know what’s cooler? Using this horrible incident to make an actual difference in your community. @miiabenante and I have been talking about this all week, and she asked me why these pissed off people can’t go to school to be lawyers or officers and make difference and I thought that was a pretty great idea 🙂 be safe. Love you all.

The Wedding Band (Metallica, Ugly Kid Joe, Etc.) Announce Columbia, South Carolina Show

The Wedding Band, the covers group featuring guitarist Kirk Hammett (Metallica), bassist Robert Trujillo (Metallica), vocalist Whitfield Crane (Ugly Kid Joe), and guitarist Doc Coyle (Bad Wolves), will be performing at The Senate in Columbia, South Carolina on March 8. The band will also be joined by drummer Jon Theodore (ex-The Mars Volta) and vocalist Bobby Patterson at this show.

GoFundMe Launched For Juan Alderete (The Mars Volta, Marilyn Manson) Following Bicycle Accident

As previously reported, Juan Alderete (The Mars Volta, Marilyn Manson, etc.) recently suffered a traumatic brain injury after being involved in a serious bicycle accident. A GoFundMe has since been set up to raise money for medical bills.

Marilyn Manson commented:

“My friend and band mate, Juan, needs our help. And our energy. Please give whenever you can. Thank you.”

The following message was also shared on GoFundMe:

“Juan Alderete – beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, friend, bandmate and cat dad – has had the privilege of connecting with music lovers around the world through his remarkable talent as the bassist in Marilyn Manson, The Mars Volta, Big Sir, Deltron 3030, Dr. Octagon, Vato Negro, Halo Orbit and Racer X in addition to lending his bass lines to music by Lil Peep, Jonwayne, Juliette Lewis, B’z and many more.

On January 13, 2020, Juan was involved in a bicycle accident that—despite wearing a helmet and protective gear—left him with a serious type of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) known as Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI). He also suffered a fractured clavicle and spinal fracture.

And as many of you fellow musicians and artists understand, there is no paid time off or sick time for this type of work. The journey Juan and his family are about to embark on is a marathon, not a sprint; it is a long road and we want to be able to tap some of the best and most passionate medical professionals who are experts on TBI patients and their potential for recovery.

Physical, occupational and cognitive therapies are just some of what we’ll need to pay for in the coming weeks and months. In-patient care and therapy, special medical equipment and assistance are other expenses we anticipate in the longer term. And while we help Juan focus on recovering, he will not be able to work but of course the goal is to get him back to playing music, and talking pedals on Pedals and Effects with his partner in crime, Nick. Because the world needs Juan on bass just as much as Juan needs to play bass.

More about Diffuse Axonal Injury
Neurologists have a saying, “Once you’ve seen one DAI patient, you’ve seen one DAI patient,” which means there aren’t any two cases that are alike and the outcomes vary to the point where doctors are hesitant to offer an exact prognosis. Which means we’re ready to take on the challenge and offer Juan every opportunity for him and his brain to heal. And we need your help.

While the outcome is uncertain, Juan‘s family, friends and fellow musicians all agree that we must spend the better part of the next year offering him every single opportunity and resource we can so he can beat this and come back stronger than ever.

We have to advocate for him and be proactive with his care and treatments because – if you’ve ever had a prolonged experience in the healthcare system in the U.S. – you’ve experienced the lack of initiative that is so prevalent. If we want Juan to have the best chance at recovery, we have to draft that plan and get the resources ourselves.

We hope you’ll be part of his road to recovery – any small donation helps, and we will post regular updates here and on his social channels so you’re able to follow his progress.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Cedric Bixler-Zavala (At The Drive-In, The Mars Volta) Accuses Scientologists Of Poisoning His Puppy

In 2017, Cedric Bixler-Zavala (At The Drive-In, The Mars Volta) blasted the Church of Scientology for allegedly covering up for actor Danny Masterson (“That ’70s Show,” etc.), who was accused of raping several women including Bixler-Zavala’s wife Chrissie Carnell. Bixler-Zavala and Carnell previously had ties to Scientology, but after they spoke out against it, the frontman said he was followed, got his phones tapped, etc. He also claimed that his dog was poisoned. Now, he has revealed that he sadly had to put down his new puppy after someone fed it rat poison.

Bixler-Zavala said the following:

“I’m at the vet dealing with another hurt animal. This [poisoned meat] is what I’ve been finding in my front and backyard. This is what scientology does when you speak about the predators they protect.”

He also added the following in a separate post:

“We had to put her down today. This was the result of eating rat poison rolled up in raw meat. This is the 2nd dog we’ve had to put down due to the harassment from private investigators and Scientologists. This only makes us stronger. My boys named her biscuit. They still don’t understand what’s happening. We said goodbye to her and let her go peacefully.”

His wife also commented:

“She died in my arms today. A team of vets and the ASPCA’s poison department just confirmed she was fed a brick of flavored rat poison. She was supposed to turn a year old this week. They fed her the most lethal kind. The one where she bleeds out internally. Her lungs were filled with blood. Blood was dripping from her nose and mouth. I’m destroyed.

“The ASPCA opened a case file on it. They re sending me the medical file to then go file a police report here. My kids could have died or gotten extreely ill. They’re always out finding treasures. Always putting their hands in therir mouths.”

Bixler-Zavala has since called out other Scientologists as well [slightly edited by MetalSucks]:

“I will not shut my mouth about this shit. Clearly you repugnant pieces of shit don’t want my wife and I to tell our story. We most certainly have some interesting receipts that can tie a whole fuck load of xenu sympathizers and xenu soliers to these rapes. Never trust a Scientologist who tries to co-opt the me too movement. Never trust an artist who is still friendly with their Scientologist celebrity pals. You know who I’m talking about. Go ahead and scroll past this and turn your blind eye. This whole bullshit idea of tolerance is a very convenient way of you hiding your head in a hole while you ‘separate’ the artist from their ‘spiritual’ beliefs.

“You go ahead and take gigs with these people. You would be an utter fool to think that the money you help make on tour with these sheep doesn’t go back to celebrity center. If Beck can leave what the fuck is your chicken shit excuse? You gotta wonder what kind of dirt they got on you from your auditing sessions or your time on the purification rundown. ‘They’ pass your folders around and own you. You would be surprised who is in whose pocket.

“So here’s a special shout out to all the Powerful Cats, all the midnight vultures, all the friends of Earl, all the Berric troops, all you owners of hip red bag coffee, all you Stoned owners of Harvard, all you House Geisha dwellers, all you managerial pieces of shit repping strokes of luck, all of you Oscar stylists, all you deadly little Sarahs, all you post apocalyptic soldiers fighting zombies in Atlanta, all you black cube thugs, all you newly indoctrinated ‘people of the sun,’ all you poser hags wearing Native American regalia for purposes of rock stardom. I see you. I see what side of HERstory you are on.

“And finally, to our beloved horse fucker Bijoux. Swab your mouth all you want, you ain’t African American. How’s that new kidney treating you? Probably best to stop drinking. Not everybody can afford something so ephemeral as a fucking kidney. I loved you in the movie Bully. So method.”

Juan Alderete (The Mars Volta, Marilyn Manson) Suffers Traumatic Brain Injury In Bicycle Accident

Juan Alderete (The Mars Volta, Marilyn Manson, etc.) recently suffered a traumatic brain injury after being involved in a serious bicycle accident. The incident took place on January 13 and he is currently in a coma.

Alderete’s wife Anne issued the following statement:

“Hi everyone – this is Anne, Juan‘s wife. While I generally hesitate to share personal details on social media, it felt right to include all of you who’ve supported Juan over the years as friends, fans, fellow music (and food, cat, bike, Japan) lovers and musicians.

Juan was in a solo (no cars, other people) and very serious bicycle accident on 1/13/20 not far from our home. He – as always – was wearing a helmet and protective clothing but sustained serious head trauma in the form of a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI); his form of TBI is Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI) and as of today, he remains in a coma.

The only prognosis is to wait and see, as the brain is a complicated organ and the outcomes for DAI patients has a range as wide as the sea. While frustrating, it also allows for a world of positive outcomes so we can only hope for the best.

We know you have questions, concerns, thoughts to share, so please feel free to leave them in the comments (not DM please, sorry) here. We’re also very eager to hear from neurologists, medical professionals with experience in DAI and TBI, first-person accounts of similar trauma and outcomes – essentially any useful, factual and accurate resources that relate to Juan‘s injury. If you have any of these, please DM me (Anne) @tunatoast. [via Instagram.]

We will post updates here from time to time. Thank you all and please keep Juan in your thoughts. – xo, Anne”
