Watain’s Singapore Show Cancelled On Religious Grounds

Watain were supposed to perform at the EBX Live Space in Singapore tonight (March 7), but the show ended up getting cancelled on religious grounds. The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) originally approved the concert, but they changed their minds after hearing from the Home Affairs Ministry (MHA). This news comes after over 17,000 people signed a petition to get Watain and Soilwork banned from the country.

IMDA issued the following statement:

“MHA has expressed serious concerns about the concert, given the band’s history of denigrating religions and promoting violence, which has potential to cause enmity and disrupt Singapore’s social harmony.”

The band have since commented as well:

“In the light of yesterdays events in Singapore we would like to send a proud hail to our fans and followers from Singapore, Indonesia, Sarawak, Burma, Laos, Philippines and Malaysia who had traveled to see yesterdays performance but were robbed of their experience in the last minute by Singapore’s tragic excuse for a government.

It was an honor to meet you all yesterday and to sense the fire in your eyes and in your spirits. We look forward to the day we can perform for you without the interference from lesser men.

To the honorless rats behind the ban, rest assured that you in your cowardly act have only stirred the cauldrons of your own misfortune. If these men and women didn’t already feel mistrust and contempt towards ‘authorities’, they sure do now. The flames of discontent have once again been kindled, may they scorch your heavens…”

It’s worth noting that Soilwork were supposed to perform at the same venue on March 12, but the show has now been rescheduled for October 29.

Watain Guitarist Steps Away From The Band After A Photo Of Him Appearing To Give A Nazi Salute Surfaces

Watain‘s live guitarist Set Teitan (aka Davide Totaro) has decided to step away from the band after a photo of him appearing to give a Nazi salute surfaced online. MetalSucks shared the picture, which you can see at the bottom of this post. This news comes after the group previously denied allegations of Nazism after Teitan made a similar hand gesture onstage in Stockholm, Sweden.

Frontman Erik Danielsson commented:

“The gesture on that picture was done in jest that’s as much as we have to say about that, but to put an end to this tiresome and time-consuming nonsense the guitarist in question has decided to step aside for a period of time to avoid further hopeless discussions on the subject.

“We furthermore spit upon the ill-willed ignorance of all those who maintain that Watain have any political agenda whatsoever, for 20 years we have proven otherwise and people should know better by now. Finally we would like to send a heartfelt fuck off to all who insist on feeding the mindless moral witch-hunt hysteria that is now festering on worldwide Heavy Metal culture. Hail Satan!”

Watain Deny Allegations Of Nazism After Guitarist’s Onstage Salute

Watain have denied allegations of Nazism following a recent show at the Kraken in Stockholm, Sweden, in which live guitarist Set “Davide Totaro” Teitan did an arm movement that looked similar to a Sieg Heil/Nazi salute. You can find the band’s full statement, along with footage from the concert below.

Watain’s statement:

“It has come to our attention that people have misinterpreted an arm movement of Set at our Kraken show as a “nazi salute”. Fucking hell, come on folks! As everyone should know by now, Watain band members have no ties to nazi ideology neither publically nor personally, and with this statement we want to put an end to further uneccesary speculation in this tiresome subject.

What we give praise to in our songs and in their lyrics could very well be seen as the very anti-thesis to some utopian right wing ideology of the past. “Saluting” one of our many enemies on the sacred ground that is our stage would not make much sense. That is something we are sure our fans and supporters -who we are proud to say are from every possible “race”, gender, nation and cultural background- can testify to.

As would the fact that our line-up and working crew are also of a widely diverse ethnical background. And the list goes ever on, eliminating all possible forms of soiling by political or ideological agendas, allowing the Devil’s fire to burn clear and untainted in the sanctuary that we have created for ourselves.

It is of course highly regrettable that these unwelcome, inconvenient and misplaced accusations are even allowed to arise and we hope we can now put this behind us and focus on the many important tasks at hand.

Thank you for understanding.

Now let us fearlessly and doubtlessly move forward into the raging chaos of metallic deathnoise madness that is Trident Wolf Eclipse.

FTW!”
