Ville Valo (HIM) Premieres “Neon Noir” Music Video

VV, aka HIM’s Ville Valo, has premiered a new video for the title track of his newly released album “Neon Noir.” You can check that out below. Valo commented:

“I firmly believe Neon Noir sprinkles some much-missed glitter all over modern day doom and gloom. It’s 12 lessons in reckless abandon without spilling the red.”

Ville Valo On The Possibility Of A HIM Reunion: “Never Say Never”

During a recent appearance on “The James McMahon Music Podcast,” Ville Valo was asked about the possibility of a HIM reunion. The frontman, who is currently planning to release his debut solo album “Neon Noir” on January 13, responded by saying “never say never.”

Valo said the following:

“Never say never, I’d say. HIM was so much more than just a band to me. I met Migé [Mikko Paananen], the bass player, when I was about 12. I met Linde [Mikko Lindström], the guitar player, when I was maybe 13 or 14. So we grew up together and went through so many different phases in our lives anyway together, with HIM providing the soundtrack for it and the focus or being the focal point. And it’s so much more than about just monetary things.

If there would be a good reason, good sort of idea or good cause, or if, all of a sudden, everybody would start to gravitate towards each other, I think that would be the best thing. [If] all of a sudden everybody in their own lives just start[ed] to… where it would make sense [to get back together] after all this time. ‘Cause you need to take breaks.

[Toward the end of HIM], it wasn’t necessarily fizzling out, but we had definitely lost the spark regarding creating new music. We tried to work it out, but it didn’t sound good. It started to feel like a day job, and when it starts to feel like that, it’s definitely time to end it, in the world of rock and roll, I think. Or in our world of rock and roll. So I cannot tell you whether we’re gonna feel like that in the future. I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t wanna do it right now. It’s not something I will think about constantly, or ever, to be honest with you.”

He continued when asked if he was approached about going solo while HIM were still active:

“It was a weird existence, because I did write most of the songs [in HIM], and a lot of people, when we started out, they thought it was a solo project, also because it was called ‘HIM’. It was a weird combo. So all those 25 years I had to fight for the guys to get some recognition, saying that I do write the songs, I sing the songs, but we are childhood mates and that the sound and the way they play their instruments, it makes a big difference; it cannot be just whomever. So I’m actually glad not to talk about that at all [when it comes to my solo project]; I don’t have to, ’cause I played all the stuff by myself and I’m the one to carry the blame or the good and the bad and the ugly.

I was told that many a time. And especially when something happens to be successful… I mentioned [earlier in the interview] ‘Join Me In Death’ [HIM’s 1999 single] being sort of a pop hit in Germany and all that stuff, and you can’t imagine the amount of cooks that wanted to be in that kitchen at that time. Everybody had something to say and dollar signs in their eyes. But it’s not a world I feel comfortable in.

Music is still my safe place, so whenever in doubt, I start listening to BLACK SABBATH. That’s what I did. And that’s where it all started. And that’s also how it happens. Because I don’t wake up in the morning and say to myself, ‘Now I’m gonna write a song.’ Working on music or being creative, it’s my way of understanding the reality around me — it’s my survival kit. It helps me out to understand the world and cope with the pressures and the struggles that we all go through. That’s been my method. And it’s funny that it’s a passion that turned into a hobby that turned into work, and it’s all those things in one neat little box. It’s terribly hard at times, but then again I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

“‘The Foreverlost’ is yet another loud love song depicting the burlesque butoh between two world-weary souls. All my Carmina Buranas and ‘could’ve should’ve would’ves’ rolled into a neat little Gordian knot of the gothic variety.”

HIM’s Ville Valo Reveals Details For New Album “Neon Noir”

VV, aka HIM’s Ville Valo, has officially revealed the details for his new album “Neon Noir.” The effort will be released on January 13, 2023 and you can find the cover art and track listing for it below:

“Neon Noir” Track Listing:

01. “Echolocate Your Love”
02. “Run Away From The Sun”
03. “Neon Noir”
04. “Loveletting”
05. “The Foreverlost”
06. “Baby Lacrimarium”
07. “Salute The Sanguine”
08. “In Trenodia”
09. “Heartful Of Ghosts”
10. “Saturnine Saturnalia”
11. “Zener Solitaire”
12. “Vertigo Eyes”

Valo said the following about the album:

“‘Neon Noir’ is a sonic step-by-step guide on how to survive, and perhaps even enjoy, the realm of VV with its abundance of things that go bump in the night. It’s a teary mascara marathon between Robert Smith and Ozzy, with a dash of hope.”

He also added the following about the lyrical inspiration during an interview with Kerrang!:

“I wouldn’t call it ‘suicidal’, but most of the stuff was written during the pandemic, and there weren’t many rays of sun hitting me. Everybody was in the mental gutter. Times were tough. This album was the kind of like the lifebuoy for me. It gave me a reason to wake up every morning and work on something else and try to shut the world outside. When I was working on the music, maybe it was selfish to a certain extent, but also it was a matter of survival.”

“It seems that mankind needs a bit of a breather from all this shit, myself included. So I tried to put all that frustration onto paper. And if it’s love and darkness, and all sorts of things like that, that’s probably because it’s my vocabulary. Hopefully, the words have been rearranged in a fresh order this time around. But me trying to do something completely different, just because, that doesn’t make any sense to me at all.”

“As fun as the funeral rites for HIM were, it took me more than a few moons to lick my wounds in the shadow of the Heartagram and come up with an excuse to strum and hum again. Eventually, I decided to put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That’s how ‘Loveletting’ was born.”

Eventually, I decided to put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That’s how ‘Loveletting’ was born.”

He also added the following about VV as a whole:

“Artistically speaking, the main difference between HIM and VV is the extra line in the Heartagram, but what an exquisite line it is! It’s the Mamas and the Papas dressed up as Metallica on their way to a Halloween bash at the Studio 54, and now who wouldn’t want to witness that?”

Ville Valo (HIM) Releases New EP “Gothica Fennica Vol. 1”

Ville Valo (HIM) has released a new EP titled “Gothica Fennica Vol. 1.” The effort was released under the moniker VV and it features three songs: “Salute The Sanguine,” “Run Away From The Sun,” and “Saturnine Saturnalia.”

Ville Valo (HIM) Records Album Of Previously Unreleased Songs By Rauli “Badding” Somerjoki

Following the disbandment of HIM, Ville Valo will be returning with a new project called Ville Valo & Agents. The band, which also features guitarist Esa Pulliainen, will be releasing a new covers album featuring previously unreleased songs that were written by late Finnish musician Rauli “Badding” Somerjoki. The effort is expected to be released early next year and the first single “Orpolapsi Kiurun“ will be released on September 21. Pulliainen commented:

“This story begins three years ago. Upon finding three demo cassettes in my drawer which had been sent to me by Badding back in the day, I knew I had to contact Ville right from the get-go. I was aware he knows his Badding inside out. I’m really happy that we were able to finalize this project. Badding meant for these songs to be recorded and even if it took us 30 years to make that happen, I feel I’ve kept my promise.”

Former HIM & Amorphis Members Join Forces In Flat Earth

Former HIM members Mikko “Linde” Lindström and Gas Lipstick (ex-HIM) have joined forces with Niclas Etelävuori (ex-Amorphis) and Anttoni “Anthony” Pikkarainen (Polanski) in a new band called Flat Earth. The group are recording their debut album at Finnvox in Helsinki with producer Hiili Hiilesmaa. More info can be found HERE.

The press release said the following about the band:

“Flat Earth is anything but your run-of-the-mill ‘supergroup. The fearsome foursome is an ideal amalgamation of love for music, every bandmember’s unique skillset and battle-tested charisma, completed with a dynamic of a band that has been playing together for aeons.

The audible musical signposts point to the heydays of alternative rock, take a nonchalant bow to the forefathers of all things heavy with a pinch of wistful psychedelia,” the press release continues. “Magnetically melodic, playful, exhilaratingly unconstrained and thoroughly permeated by vocalist Anthony’s passionately melancholic overtones, FLAT EARTH delivers in the same parcel both the beauty and the beast.

“Gas and Niclas’s robust-yet-subtle rhythmic dynamic work pave the perfect runway for Linde’s guitar solos to freewheel and Anthony’s maudlin-yet-contemplative singing that gives the band’s sound a tint of mawkish desperation that sets them apart from any other band you’ve heard.”
