“Stranger Things” Actor Jamie Campbell Bower Listened To Mayhem, Darkthrone, Etc. To Prepare For The Role Of Vecna

Jamie Campbell Bower, the actor who played Vecna in “Stranger Things,” has revealed the bands that he listened to while preparing for the role. Among them are Sunn O))), Carpathian Forest, Darkthrone, and Mayhem.

Bower said the following during an appearance on the “Kyle Meredith With…” podcast:

“When I was prepping for Vecna, to get into Vecna, I would use a lot of bands like Sun 0))), Carpathian Forest, Darkthrone, Mayhem. A lot of black metal kind of stuff that I just really latched onto and thought, ‘Wow, this is great.’ There’s also something about the sensitivity in the way black metal is made and their belief system which I really fucking vibe with.”

He also added:

“That was Vecna getting into Vecna. Escaping Vecna… I’m a huge fan of Placebo. I love Placebo. And obviously Placebo covered Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” sometime in, I dunno, I guess it must have been the late ’90s, early 2000s. And so I would go with that. Why not stick to the theme that’s already in the show? But the song is so beautiful, we love Kate Bush, we stan Kate Bush… Or if I’m being really naughty, if someone wanted me to be naughty, and they asked, ‘What would you pick?’, I would say, ‘I dunno, fucking Miley Cyrus’ ‘Party in the USA” or something bollocks like that.”

Alice In Chains’ William DuVall And Sunn O)))’s Greg Anderson Team Up For New Benefit Track “We Who Walk In Light”

The Lord, the project featuring Sunn O)))’s Greg Anderson, have teamed up with Alice In Chains’ William DuVall for a new benefit song titled “We Who Walk In Light.” The track can be purchased on Bandcamp with proceeds set to go towards Jail Guitar Doors. DuVall commented:

“‘We Who Walk In Light‘ just came to me. I simply reacted to the music Greg sent, tracked and arranged all my parts at home alone. I wrote it as I was singing it, all at once, no second guessing. Thankfully, my wife was out of town at the time as she might have been a bit unsettled by some of the sounds emanating from the basement. It’s basically a heavy metal Buddhist monk choir with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan flying in for a cameo. I’m sure it’s channeling some of the tension of current times. I was happy to be asked by The Lord to collaborate and I’m glad to donate the proceeds to my friend Brother Wayne Kramer’s organization, Jail Guitar Doors.”

Sunn O))) To Release New Album “Pyroclasts” In October

Sunn O))) have announced that their new album “Pyroclasts” will be released on October 25. The effort was recorded with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio studio in Chicago, IL, during the same sessions that yielded the band’s recently released album “Life Metal.” You can find a teaser for “Pyroclasts” below:

A press release offered more info on the album:

‘The ‘Pyroclasts‘ album is the result of a daily practice which was regularly performed each morning, or evening during the two week ‘Life Metal‘ sessions at Electrical Audio during July 2018, when all of the days musical participants would gather and work through a twelve-minute improvised modal drone at the start and or end of the day’s work.

The piece performed was timed with a stopwatch and tracked to two-inch tape, it was an exercise and a chance to dig into a deep opening or closing of the day’s session in a deep musical way with all of the participants. To connect/reconnect, liberate the creative mind a bit and greet each other and the space through the practice of sound immersion. The players across the four pieces of Pyroclasts are Tim Midyett, T.O.S., Hildur Guðnadóttir, and as always Stephen O’Malley & Greg Anderson’

‘The music on ‘Pyroclasts‘ is inextricably woven to ‘Life Metal‘. It exists on the very same tape reels, was explicitly recorded by Steve Albini. The brightness and vividness of that glorious session glares through these four tracks, the precision and radiance, prismatic lustrousness of the saturation, the elemental sculptural shapes, the abstract renderings. It is a sister, or perhaps a shadow album. Or perhaps the now apparent miasma or aether. But it also exists in a form of a pause, a time space which exist in between and around the compositional structures of Sunn O)))‘s titanic works.’
