• Zakk Wylde On The Possibility Of Recording New Pantera Music Based On Dimebag Darrell’s Riffs: “That’s All Up To Philip And Rex”

During an interview with Meltdown of Detroit’s WRIF, current Pantera guitarist Zakk Wylde discussed the possibility of recording new music based on riffs from the late great Dimebag Darrell. He says it’s “all up to” vocalist Philip Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown.

    Wylde said the following:

“Everyone’s always asking about something like that, but I always [compare it] almost kind of like if Eric Clapton was playing with [Jimi Hendrix Experience bassist] Noel Redding and [Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer] Mitch Mitchell, and if there was leftover material Jimi wrote that he didn’t record properly or whatever, and Eric is gonna play guitar on it and sing it. If it was this unfinished ‘Purple Haze’ song he had, or ‘Hey Joe’ or ‘The Wind Cries Mary’ or ‘Little Wing’ or something — he just recorded it on a tape recorder, so the song’s all there; it’s just that he didn’t record it. So I think there was thoughts of that, if there was leftover things and then we’ll just record ’em properly. But that’s all up to Philip and Rex. Me and [drummer] Charlie [Benante] are just there to support ’em in whatever the fellows wanna do.”

  • Tom Morello On Black Sabbath And Ozzy Osbourne’s Final Show: “It Was Really Pretty Special”

As previously reported, Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine, etc.) served as the curator for Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne’s July 5, 2025 farewell show at Villa Park in Birmingham, UK. Now, during a recent interview with 98KUPD, the guitarist reflected on the experience, calling it “really pretty special.”

Morello said the following after being asked when he realized it “was more than just a concert”:

“Well, I had that in my bullseye from the beginning. If we’re gonna do this, we have to aim to make it the greatest day in the history of heavy metal. Heavy metal is the music that made me love music. It’s in the DNA of 90% of my favorite artists. And so if we’re gonna do this, we really have to treat it with the gravity that it deserves. I will say that once the actual day started, and, dude, it was thousands of hours of preparation and worry and anxiety and changing around stuff — changed in the last 24 hours, et cetera, et cetera — but once it actually started, I had to let go. I’m, like, ‘Okay, the bands are now gonna play their songs or they’re gonna fall off the stage. I can’t control it anymore.’

I’ll share two moments with you. One was — it was actually the night before. We had had three days of 12-hour rehearsals with the supergroups. And we just finished the last one. Everybody’s so tired, jet lagging. The last group, which was me, Steven Tyler [of AEROSMITH], Nuno [Bettencourt of EXTREME], my son was there, et cetera, we’re getting ready to go back to the hotel, try to get a good night’s sleep before this thing actually kicks off. And somebody comes in and goes, ‘BLACK SABBATH is soundchecking right now. Do you wanna go see ’em?’ And we’re, like, ‘Oh, I think I can make time for that.’ So we are in Birmingham stadium — the only people in the stadium. There’s, like, 12 people in the stadium. BLACK SABBATH is practicing their intro, which is a song called ‘War Pigs’. So this is the second-to-last time they’re ever going to play this song. The red lights are on, the sirens are wailing. There’s 12 people in the audience, and then they play ‘War Pigs’ for us. And at the end of it — they don’t even know we’re there. So at the end of it, we’re a quarter of a mile away just cheering like crazy — Steven Tyler, and Scott Ian [of ANTHRAX] and me — and we’re just going absolutely [nuts]. And I felt that — I felt, ‘Okay, this is something that could really, really matter.’ And then afterwards, the show happens and it feels like it’s an emotional success for all of the artists involved, for the bands, for Ozzy, for the city, for fans. And Ozzy actually went to the afterparty. Ozzy was there in the afterparty. So we finally go back to the hotel. Now the hotel lobby, which they kept open till dawn, was filled with the bands, fans from all over the world. And it’s been a year and a half working on this show. It finally happened. We’re exhausted, but we did it. We walk in, sort of this contingent of us, and the whole place goes crazy. Everybody’s crying and standing and cheering for that band, for the legacy, for the night, for the fact that like we actually did this. We did something that really, really mattered for fans and for the band. It was really pretty special.”

He continued when asked if there were any hard calls he had to make:

“2,000 calls. One of the greatest moments of it was Yungblud singing [a cover of BLACK SABBATH’s] ‘Changes’. Well, 48 hours before, he wasn’t gonna be the singer of that song. Things were changing… I landed at Heathrow Airport and I got a call, like, ‘That’s not happening.’ So I’m, like, ‘Okay, let’s figure it out.’ And it turned out to be one of the highlights. But that’s the gig. That’s what the gig is.”

Morello also shared his last memory of Ozzy:

“I’m at the afterparty playing pinball with my son. And somebody’s tugging at my shirt. I’m, like, in the middle of a multiball. So I’m, like, ‘Get off me. I got a multi…’ It’s Ozzy Osbourne. It’s Ozzy. So [Ozzy’s son] Jack Osbourne comes back and goes, ‘Dude, that was my dad.’ I’m, like, ‘Oh, I’m so sorry.’ So anyway, I let the pinballs drop. And I go over to him. And he was appreciative of everything that had gone on. I got to give him a kiss on the head one more time, thank him. And then this is the last words that Ozzy Osbourne said to me in person. He was, like, ‘Tell Sharon I wanna get the fuck outta here’ — in true Ozzy form and also sort of poetic in a way.”

  • A Previously Unheard Ozzy Osbourne Rehearsal Tape Was Found In An Attic

A previously unheard rehearsal tape featuring the late Ozzy Osbourne was recently discovered. The recording was found in an attic belonging to David Jolly, who befriended the singer during his time in Ilketshall, England. The tape contains a 1980 jam session featuring Osbourne, bassist Bob Daisley, and late guitarist Randy Rhoads. Daisley told Sky News the following about the recording:

“As soon as I heard it, I thought, yes, that’s us, that’s Ozzy‘s voice. I don’t know if we were auditioning a drummer and just loosening up a bit, or we’re just clowning about… but it wasn’t a song we were working on because we had definite songs by then, we had several songs.”

  • VRSTY Release Cover Of Bad Bunny And Rauw Alejandro’s “Qué Pasaría”

VRSTY have released a new cover of Bad Bunny and Rauw Alejandro’s “Qué Pasaría.” You can check that out below. Vocalist Joey Tyler commented:

“I have such a deep love for Spanish music and my culture in general, so this song always stuck out to me. There’s something incredibly sexy and forbidden about the original, and I definitely tried my hardest to translate that in my own way! It makes me think that I should just fully commit to doing Spanish songs at some point. We’ll see!”

  • Hatebreed’s New Album Is “Pretty Much Done”

During a recent appearance on the Hardlore podcast, Hatebreed guitarist Frank Novinec offered an update on the band’s new album. According to him, the effort is “pretty much done.”

    Novinec said the following:

“[It’s] coming out this year, yeah. Most, of it’s pretty much — I mean, it’s done.”

He also discussed the group’s latest single “Make The Demons Obey”:

“The nice thing about in this era — I was telling somebody the other day that’s not in the music business like we are — the nice thing about the way things are rolled out now, I think, is you can drop a single even if you have the whole record done, and be, like, ‘All right, now there’s all this time’, where you can really review what you’ve done and you could really change something that you didn’t like or even make another song and all that. It’s not, like, ‘Okay, there’s the record, there’s the two videos. Here’s what are supposed to be the singles. And that’s it.’ So it’s nice to be able to drop the single, which we had a great response for. We love the song. As far as the band’s concerned, we’re real happy with ‘Make The Demons Obey’. And we’ll probably leak another one here soon. And there’ll probably be proper videos coming after that.”

He continued when asked if he has a major role in the songwriting process:

“No. I think I have one riff on one song. It was always [former bassist] Chris [Beattie] and [vocalist] Jamey [Jasta] writing the music. That’s it. From day one, it’s Chris and Jamey. They’re the guys [who wrote all the music] from day one, for the most part.”

He also added the following when asked if Beattie’s departure changed the songwriting dynamic:

“[Guitarist] Wayne [Lozinak], I think, is… We all have our ideas about songs. Songs are presented, [and then we say], ‘Hey, I think we should change this,’ ‘Hey, I think this riff should go longer.’

I’m not a groove dude like that when it comes to writing. I’m not somebody that’s trying to show up and break something that’s not broken.”
