Red Hot Chili Peppers Are “Almost Done” With Their New Album

During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith confirmed that the band are “almost done” with their new album. The effort will be the band’s first with guitarist John Frusciante since 2006 and it is expected to be released before their 2022 stadium tour.

Smith said the following about working with Frusciante again:

“We’re getting along great. John’s been back for a while now, so it feels completely natural. … We’re really listening to each other in a new way.”

He also added the following about the writing process for the new record:

“We were gonna play some festivals that obviously got postponed. So we could just plow through and write, and that’s what we did. It was kind of a blessing, because we want to come out with new music and play some new songs. It’s gonna be great when we finally go out next year and have a record to play, and a bunch of other stuff, obviously.”

Smith also had the following to say when asked if the band were worried about creating music that lives up to their past work with Frusciante:

“You can’t really think about that. All of our records are just real good snapshots of where we’re at that time. You can’t really go, ‘Oh, gee, I hope it’s as good as …’ Then you’re starting to have preconceived notions about what you want to write. Look, John hasn’t been in our group in 10 years. That’s a long time. So of course it’s going to sound different, but it’s gonna sound like the four of us because we do have this special chemistry together. It sounds like Red Hot Chili Peppers, but it’s different and new, and to me that’s great. … We really like it and we’re proud of it and it has to start there. If other people like it, great. If people compare it to this or [say] it doesn’t sound like that, we have no control over that. But, yeah, we’re all really happy with the record.”

He was delighted by the tracks he lived long enough to hear. Even in what turned out to be his final days of life, he listened to mixes on a laptop in his hospital bed and asked me to send notes and responses to the contributors on his behalf. He also talked to me about further musicians he hoped to coax to come on board. After he died, I made contact with several of these. All said yes.”

Watch Red Hot Chili Peppers Perform With Guitarist John Frusciante For First Time Since 2007

Yesterday (February 8), Red Hot Chili Peppers took the stage with guitarist John Frusciante for the first time in over 12 years. The set took place during a private memorial show that the Tony Hawk Foundation organized in honor of the late Andrew Burkle, son of billionaire Ron Burkle. Former Red Hot Chili Peppers Guitarist Josh Klinghoffer On John Frusciante’s Return To the Band: “I’m Happy That He’s Back With Them”

During an appearance on Marc Maron‘s “WTF Podcast,” Josh Klinghoffer opened up about his departure from Red Hot Chili Peppers. As previously reported, the guitarist was replaced by returning member John Frusciante in December. Despite this, Klinghoffer said he is “happy” to see Frusciante back with the group.

Klinghoffer said the following:

“I rode my bike over [to Flea’s house]. They just said, ‘We’ll get right to it. We’ve decided to ask John to come back to the band.’ And I just sat there quiet for a second and I said, ‘I’m not surprised.’ And the only thing I could think to say was, ‘I wish I could have done something with you guys, musically or creatively, that would have made this an absolute impossibility.’”

He also added that there is no animosity between himself and the band:

“It’s absolutely John’s place to be in that band. So that’s why I’m happy for him, I’m happy that he’s back with them.”

Klinghoffer went on to reflect on his time with the group:

“If John coming back had happened five years ago, it would have been hard for me, temporally, to weigh [my contributions] against what they had. Now, after 10 years, two tours, and almost three albums of writing, I’m really proud of what I did with them. I feel like we did create something.”
