High On Fire’s Matt Pike Premieres Music Video For “Land” Featuring Mastodon’s Brent Hinds

Matt Pike (High On Fire, Sleep) has premiered a new video for his new song “Land.” This track features Brent Hinds (Mastodon) and it will appear on Pike’s new solo album, “Pike Vs. The Automaton,” which is set to be released on February 18. Pike commented:

“‘Land‘ was written after I had just come home from a tour. It’s like an old blues song. I was thinking of it as like a bunch of old dudes in a subway doing a doo-wop thing. It has the feel of a two-step like my Mom used to dance to, like Country Western. It’s totally about depression and leading a hard life. Later, I was playing the song for Brent Hinds from Mastodon who had come out to Portland to jam with me and he laid down this smokin’-ass Billy Gibbons kind of solo! I did one solo and then he did his solo and I’m like, ‘You’re a dick,’ (laughs). The bass player from Brent’s other band West End Motel, Steve McPeeks, played some stand-up bass – both plucking and with a bow – and it really brought out this depth to the song. I’ve never written a song like that and recorded it and made it as cool as it is. It’s totally different.”

Matt Pike (High On Fire, Sleep) To Release New Solo Album “Pike Vs. The Automaton” In February, Premieres “Alien Slut Mum” Music Video

Matt Pike (High On Fire, Sleep) has announced that he will be releasing a new solo album, titled “Pike Vs. The Automaton,” on February 18. He worked on the effort with drummer Jon Reid (ex-Lord Dying) and producer Billy Anderson (Sleep, High On Fire). A number of guests also contributed including Jeff Matz (High On Fire), Alyssa Maucere-Pike (Lord Dying, Grigax), Brent Hinds (Mastodon), Steve McPeeks (West End Motel), Josh Greene (El Cerdo), Todd Burdette (Tragedy) and Chad “Chief” Hartgrave.

“Pike Vs. The Automaton” Track Listing:

01. “Abusive”
02. “Throat Cobra”
03. “Trapped In A Midcave”
04. “Epoxia”
05. “Land”
06. “Alien Slut Mum”
07. “Apollyon”
08. “Acid Test Zone”
09. “Latin American Geological Formation”
10. “Leaving The Wars Of Woe ”

Pike said the following about the new record:

“I was just going bonkers during the pandemic. It was like really, truly miserable. And then all the riots here in Portland and all the political shit. I was trapped in my garage, which was the only place I could go and jam and do anything. I was trapped in there ‘cause I couldn’t go jam with High On Fire, I couldn’t do this, I couldn’t do that, no one could fly. I was going crazy.

My friend Jon Reid, who was the original drummer for Lord Dying, had moved to Portland and was babysitting my dog, Crom, and he was drumming for my wife’s band, so he had his drums already set up at my place. I finally said, ‘Dude, do you want to come over and just start jamming?’ So, I just started this thing with my friend Jon. I was like, ‘Dude, fuck it. Let’s start a side band and we’ll just demo this and act like we’re starting it as teenagers, you know?’

The album title, ‘Pike Vs. The Automaton‘, wasn’t an ego thing for me. Billy and Jon said, ‘Dude, you should use your name in this. This is your solo project.’ I said, ‘I don’t want to do that’. The Automaton, in Greek mythology, is the big robot that’s the guardian of the Gods, basically. It’s a soulless, big machine named Talos. The big machine that’s working against mankind at this moment. In ‘Jason and the Argonauts’, Jason and the Argonauts have to battle this big machine guy that protects the island. Basically, what the album title is saying, metaphorically, is ‘Pike against the World.’

I made a psychedelic rock record that Sleep and High On Fire fans would like And maybe if you’re not a Sleep or High On Fire fan, you might like it too. I definitely think it’s interesting; it has D-Beat punk, two-step. It’s got everything and it still works together, it doesn’t sound odd. It’s just an off-the-wall psychedelic rock record.”

A video for the effort’s first single, “Alien Slut Mum,” can be found below. Pike added the following about that:

“Four friends enter the woods, for a getaway, little did they know they would never return! Dogmen, Sasquatch, Reptilians, or alien slut mum?!?! Where have they gone??”

Mastodon’s Brent Hinds Discusses His New Project With High On Fire’s Matt Pike, Reveals He Hated Touring With Disturbed

During a recent appearance on Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta‘s “The Jasta Show,” Mastodon guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds touched on a number of different topics. Among them were his new project with High On Fire vocalist/guitarist Matt Pike, his disdain for touring with Disturbed, and more.

Hinds said the following about his new band with Pike:

“I wrote way more songs that I chose not to put on the [new Mastodon] album because me and Matt Pike are starting a band together and we’re gonna work an album up and I’m gonna use a lot of that stuff for that. I kinda held back on purpose.”

According to Loudwire, he went on to say that the music will be “heavy, trippy and bluesy” and that they are planning to film a music video in December or January.

On another note, Hinds also talked about touring with Disturbed on the 2008 Mayhem Festival after being asked if he has any bucket list tours:

“No. I did a lot of tours I didn’t want to do though, like Disturbed and all that Mayhem stupid bullshit. Gay ass shit. You gotta fuckin’ open up for Disturbed. You gotta play to people that like Disturbed.“

He continued when asked if Disturbed fans were receptive of Mastodon:

“It was the ‘Mayhem Fest‘, you know, just a fuckin’ bunch of drunk Americans. They’re receptive to anything, I imagine. There’s tons of tours I want to do, but there’s most tours… our first tour for Relapse was with Dying Fetus and some other fucking band. It was horrible. I didn’t want to do that tour.”

Hjelvik (Ex-Kvelertak) Releases Uncensored Version Of His “Glory Of Hel” Video

Hjelvik (ex-Kvelertak) has released an uncensored version of his video for “Glory Of Hel.“ You can check that out below. “Glory Of Hel“ features Matt Pike (High On Fire, Sleep) and it will appear on Hjelvik’s new album “Welcome To Hel,” which is set to be released on November 20. Hjelvik previously commented:

“I’m excited to finally unveil ‘Glory Of Hel‘ in all its…glory! It’s one of the hardest rocking tracks from ‘Welcome To Hel‘ and is visited by the mythical Matt Pike (High On Fire & Sleep) who lends his killer voice and face melting guitar solo. To top that off, there’s a badass animated music video created by the disgustingly talented Adam Avilla. The video depicts a twisted take on the death of Odin’s son Balder and the ensuing events of Ragnarok with an animation style reminiscent of cult classics like ‘Heavy Metal‘ and ‘Fire and Ice‘. Thanks to both Matt and Adam for their amazing contributions and I hope people love it!”
