  • John Bush Would Be Open To An Anthrax Tour Featuring Him, Joey Belladonna, And Neil Turbin

    During an interview with The Metal Voice, John Bush discussed his recent “Celebrating The Songs Of Anthrax” shows. He also confirmed that he would be open to a hypothetical Anthrax tour featuring vocals from him, Joey Belladonna, and Neil Turbin.

    Bush had the following to say about his Anthrax-era shows, which found him joined by his Armored Saint bandmate Joey Vera (bass) as well as his Category 7 bandmates Phil Demmel (guitar), Mike Orlando (guitar), and Jason Bittner (drums):

    “Yeah, it was awesome. The shows were amazing. All three of ’em were great. It was a lot of fun. I got pretty favorable reviews from people. It was cool for me to hear those songs live as well as to hear all those guys play them so well. And I think for the fans, a lot of those people probably felt like they may never hear those songs live again. And so there was a lot of emotion in the crowd from hearing those tunes. It was really, really cool. So it was all a big giant plus, and I’m glad I finally did it. And I wanna do more. It’s just gotta fit in with my schedule. I am playing Milwaukee Metal Fest with it, and so is ARMORED SAINT the day before, so that should be fun. But there’s a lot of territories I would like to play with. It just has to coincide with my life right now. I’m kind of focused on SAINT, and we have a new record coming out. So, I’m kind of distracted, but, yeah, we’ll see.

    It’s old material, so it’s not going anywhere — let’s face it. And I don’t think there’s an urgency to have to do it, because I waited so long to do it. So, I think if there’s any urgency connected to it, it’s mostly just because the songs are demanding, so they’re not easy to do. And, unfortunately, with every passing minute. I’m getting older. So it’s more about just being able to do it. And if I’m able to do it physically, then I don’t really have to feel like I have to do it or else I can’t.”

    He continued when asked if the concerts were worth all of the preparations:

    “It was worth it. It was worth it, for sure. I mean, this isn’t just some big cash cow that I’m making a bunch of money on. I didn’t wanna lose money, of course. It paid for itself. And I think that was the key thing. And I sold a lot of records. I actually contacted Megaforce and [ordered copies of the ANTHRAX albums to sell at the gigs]… I sold all the vinyl — all of it. ‘Cause Megaforce re-released those records. So I sold all the vinyl, I didn’t sell all the CDs, but I ended up buying them anyway. And I have ’em because I signed them. Eventually I’ll sign ’em [and] I’ll sell ’em somewhere. But, yeah, it was pretty amazing that I actually sold all the records.”

    He also added the following when asked about a Helloween-style Anthrax tour consisting of sets from him, Belladonna, and Turbin:

    “I think it was really cool what HELLOWEEN did with all that. I think it’s a very creative, and it was something that I think I would like to do that. I think that probably the person that would have to be convinced would be Joey, quite frankly. And I understand whatever his perspective is on it, whether he doesn’t or does wanna do it. It’s up to him, really. And the band, of course. But I think everybody would have to feel like ‘I’m in’. Or not. And if you’re not, then don’t do it by any means.”

  • Joe Perry On Aerosmith: “The Band Is Still Kind Of Definitely Not In Touring Mode, But There Are Certainly Other Options”

    During a recent interview with Billboard, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry discussed the possibility of futher shows from the group. According to him, “the band is still kind of definitely not in touring mode, but there are certainly other options.”

    Perry said the following:

    “The band is still kind of definitely not in touring mode, but there are certainly other options, so we stay in touch.

    You just never know. It’s just been in the last six months that Steven’s started to get comfortable with singing; he literally had to take a year off before he was able to start stretching his vocal cords, and you’re always worried about reinjuring it.

    I learned a long time ago that everything we do is fragile… so we just take it day by day. You hope for the best. You just have to have the confidence and have that vision of positive in front of you. You can’t do it unless you envision it.”

  • Slipknot’s Clown On “Look Outside Your Window”: “I Know People Are Going To Love It”

    Back in 2008, Slipknot’s M. Shawn “Clown” Crahan, Corey Taylor, Jim Root, and Sid Wilson recorded an album under the name Look Outside Your Window amid the “All Hope Is Gone“ sessions. Now, it has been confirmed that the effort will finally receive a vinyl release on Record Store Day (April 18). A wide release is also rumored for June 12. As such, Clown has further discussed the record with Rolling Stone.

    Clown said the following about the name:

    “One night, we were sitting in the studio, and we looked out and saw some eyeshine on the tree in front of the window. It was pretty high up in the air, probably most definitely a raccoon looking in at us. But we started imagining cryptic mothmen, and Jim called the second song ‘Moth.’ By the end of it, Jim was walking away, and he said, ‘Always look outside your window.’ It just meant so much, and I just kept saying it over and over again. It just really solidifies who we were, what we were doing, the conversations we were having between writing and having to go down and contemplate [Slipknot], which is huge.”

    He went on to discuss influences:

    “Well, Jim and I love particular music that’s not heavy. The alternative movement started when I was 19 or 20 years old, around college. So I was growing up with the greatest albums, like [Soundgarden’s] ‘Louder Than Love‘ or [The Smashing Pumpkins’] ‘Gish‘ or Pearl Jam’s first album, anything from Sub Pop. But then I’m an old punk rocker, too. I like Big Black/Steve Albini stuff. I like real aggressive stuff like Scratch Acid and Killdozer. And with Jim, we both love Radiohead. All this different stuff fed my moods.

    So the mood you hear is Jim and I constantly wanting to make this music we love that makes us happy to hear. That music is a lot artier.”

    He continued when it was mentioned how the album contains a lot of melancholy:

    “Yeah. The album doesn’t make me cry, but it hurts. There are a lot of things that make me stop and look at myself and my life. Some of our brothers are gone. So that album ended up being a real good timestamp on other emotions … because [in Slipknot] we’re just nine human beings deciding to share our time together.”

    He also confirmed that the sessions yielded more material than what is featured on the album:

    “I could probably get another five songs [out of the sessions] but they wouldn’t be so complete as these. And Corey would have to sing all of them. There is one song that didn’t make it, but it was heavier, more like a Neurosis thing. I don’t know why it didn’t mix in; it felt a little out of place and intentional. Eventually, it’ll come out.

    Clown also agreed that the long-awaited release is bringing one chapter to a close:

    “Yes, it is definitely closing a chapter in that maybe it should have come out a long time ago, but Slipknot always stopped the forward motion of it because we’d be in an album cycle and releasing it would have disrupted both things. So I finally put my foot down, and everybody’s like, ‘It’s about time.’

    I love this album so much. I know people are going to love it and I’ve accepted that it’s going to get confused [with Slipknot]. But it’ll also open up the next generation of ‘Look Outside Your Window‘.”

    He then added the following when asked about the possibility of live shows featuring the material:

    “We as a unit of four people, at least some of us, had always said that there would be no reason we couldn’t play this live. Someone would have to play bass if we were playing live; Jim’s not going to play bass and guitar at the same time. So what will be fun for me is getting a real intricate band together to give it to people if they ever actually request it. It could very well be one, two, three special shows. I’m going to wait until someone calls me and goes, ‘Today’s the day, we have a demand.’”

  • Jury Rules That Live Nation And Ticketmaster Have Been Operating As A Monopoly

    Earlier today (April 15), a federal jury in Manhattan ruled that Live Nation and Ticketmaster have been operating as a monopoly. The decision is being viewed as a victory, but it is still unclear what effects it will have on the live entertainment industry.

    The U.S. Department of Justice previously launched an antitrust investigation and filed a lawsuit after claiming that Live Nation’s merger with Ticketmaster created unfair competition that dominates the live event industry. The DOJ ultimately reached a settlement with the companies that included up to $280 million in damages and an order to divest exclusive booking arrangements from 13 venues.

    Despite the settlement, about 30 states, including California and New York, decided to move forward with legal action against the ticketing giants. Their civil case resulted in this latest verdict.

    California Attorney General Rob Bonta commented:

    “In the face of dwindling antitrust enforcement by the Trump Administration, this verdict shows just how far states can go to protect our residents from big corporations that are using their power to illegally raise prices and rip-off Americans. We are incredibly proud of today’s outcome — and especially proud of our coalition made up of red and blue states alike who understood we needed to come together to protect our consumers, businesses, and state economies from Live Nation’s illegal conduct.”

    Live Nation also issued a statement:

    “The jury’s verdict is not the last word on this matter. Pending motions will determine whether the liability and damages rulings stand.

    Live Nation will soon renew its motion for judgment as a matter of law, which the Court deferred until after the jury returned its verdict. That motion addresses all liability theories. The Court previously noted that Live Nation’s motion raises serious issues.

    There is also a pending motion to strike the damages testimony on which the jury’s award was based. The Court deferred ruling on that motion as well, while noting significant concerns with the damages expert’s analysis.

    Of course, Live Nation can and will appeal any unfavorable rulings on these motions.

    The jury’s award of $1.72 per ticket applies to a limited number of tickets—those sold at 257 venues, which represent about 20% of total tickets—and only to purchases by fans (excluding brokers) in certain states over the past five years. Based on that scope, we believe the aggregate single damages figure would be below $150 million, which would be trebled. In connection with the DOJ settlement, Live Nation has already accrued $280 million toward state damages and civil penalty claims.

    Injunctive relief will be determined by the Court after the states make a remedy proposal, which we expect in the coming weeks. In the meantime, the Tunney Act proceedings regarding the DOJ settlement will continue. We remain confident that the ultimate outcome of the States’ case will not be materially different than what is envisioned by the DOJ settlement.”
