Van Halen’s Alex Van Halen and David Lee Roth will be joining artist Robert Vargas for a conversation during the July 30 date of the TEDxFargo event in Fargo, ND. This is the first time the two will appear together since Van Halen’s final show in 2015.
Bret Michaels (Poison) has revealed that he recently underwent kidney stone surgery. As such, the singer will now require three to four weeks of recovery.

The following statement was issued:
“BRET MICHAELS INSTRUCTED BY DOCTORS TO TAKE 3 TO 4 WEEKS OF POST-OP RECUPERATION UNTIL STENT IS REMOVED FOLLOWING IMMEDIATE COMPLICATED OBSTRUCTING KIDNEY STONE SURGERY
Michaels, currently on his ‘Live & Amplified’ World Tour, experienced severe kidney pain following his recent performance honoring our military heroes and their families at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington. On Sunday, July 19, Bret was subsequently diagnosed with a complicated obstructing kidney stone requiring immediate surgery.
Stated Dr. Abby Borhan, Bret’s physician, ‘a ureteral stent was successfully placed during the procedure and remains in situ. Due to the nature of Michaels’ post-operative condition and underlying health factors (diabetes, lower back compression fracture), he is restricted from performing for the next 3 to 4 weeks and only prescribed light physical activity as part of his recovery. A ureteral stent causes significant internal friction, constant physical discomfort, and localized inflammation. The physical demands of Bret’s high-intensity live performances exacerbate these symptoms. Strenuous physical exertion carries a high risk of intense pain spikes, gross hematuria, and acute stent displacement, which would require immediate medical intervention.
Michaels’ recovery is also complicated by his lifelong Type 1 Diabetes. Although I understand Bret’s determination to play through the pain, I explained that because Type 1 Diabetes inherently compromises the immune system and impairs healing, he faces an exceptionally high risk of contracting a serious UTI or developing urosepsis, a blood infection, until the stent is removed.’ Dr. Borhan continues, ‘the demanding nature of a high-intensity tour schedule makes it impossible to maintain the sterile environments, strict hydration schedules, frequent rest, and precise blood glucose management required for his safe recovery. He must strictly refrain from all live performances until we re-evaluate his condition in 3 to 4 weeks to determine when he can safely resume touring.’
Stated Michaels, ‘I’m forever grateful for the amazing medical treatment and ongoing medical attention throughout my personal life and career, and truly grateful for family, friends, fans, band, crew and promoters for their understanding and, if all goes well, will hit the road late August back to delivering 1000% energy, intensity and truly nothing but a good time.’
Michaels, the Bret Michaels Band and his entire team sincerely appreciate the understanding, prayers and incredible support from family, friends and fans around the world. Updates regarding rescheduled performances and his return to the Live & Amplified World Tour will be shared as soon as they become available.

Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “new music showcase,” the feature where I introduce you to artists that readers of this site may find interesting. This time I have a Q&A with Dead Defined.

METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your band:
DEAD DEFINED: Dead Defined is my solo hard rock project based in Markham, Ontario, Canada. I started the project in 2018 as a way to write honest music about real life, whether that’s loss, resilience, mental health, or overcoming the things that try to hold us back. As an independent artist, the music has now reached listeners around the world, with more than five million streams across platforms. Every release is about saying something meaningful while still delivering the heavy guitars, big hooks, and melodic choruses that made me fall in love with rock music in the first place.
METAL ANARCHY: Who are your main influences?
DEAD DEFINED: My biggest influences have always been bands like Alter Bridge, Creed, Breaking Benjamin, Sevendust, Three Days Grace, Shinedown, and Staind. Mark Tremonti has had a huge impact on the way I approach songwriting and guitar work, while vocalists like Myles Kennedy, Chris Cornell, and Aaron Lewis have influenced the emotional side of my writing. I try to take inspiration from all of them while creating something that still feels authentic to Dead Defined.
METAL ANARCHY: What is your latest release and why should readers of this site check it out?
DEAD DEFINED: My latest single is “One Life.” It’s a song about mental health and the reminder that we only get one life to live, so it’s important to ask for help, keep moving forward, and never lose sight of your own worth. It’s one of the most personal songs I’ve written because it comes from real experiences and conversations I’ve had over the years. If you’re looking for modern hard rock with a message that goes beyond the music, I think “One Life” is worth your time.
METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?
DEAD DEFINED: Right now my focus has been on writing, recording, and building Dead Defined as an independent project. When the time is right to bring these songs to the stage, I want the live show to be just as honest and energetic as the recordings. Heavy riffs, big choruses, and a performance that feels genuine rather than overproduced. My goal is for people to leave feeling like they connected with the music, not just watched another rock show.
METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see your band heading in 5 years?
DEAD DEFINED: I’d like to see Dead Defined continue growing internationally while staying independent and true to what it stands for. The goal is to keep releasing music that connects with people, expand into more festivals and live performances, and continue building a loyal fanbase around the world. More than anything, I hope the music continues to reach people who need it and reminds them that they’re not alone.

METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your band:
A PERMANENT SHADOW: A Permanent Shadow is actually a solo project disguised as a band. It’s basically myself working with two producers and some guest musicians. So far we’ve released three studio albums and two EP’s, with a new album to be released in January 2027. Stylistically, we play a mix of post-punk and electronic rock.
METAL ANARCHY: Who are your main influences?
A PERMANENT SHADOW: David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Nine Inch Nails, LCD Soundsystem, among many others.
METAL ANARCHY: What is your latest release and why should readers of this site check it out?
A PERMANENT SHADOW: Our new single is called “We’ll Be One” and it’s quite mellow compared to previous releases. The lyrics are quite heavy in contrast, dealing with stalking and obsession. We also shot a fantastic video at a derelict prison in Barcelona.
METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?
A PERMANENT SHADOW: We don’t play live much, because it’s a very costly endeavour to put a band together and take it out on the road. I want to present a full band show with a quality production, and as long as there are no guarantees, this is a bit of a challenge. I’d love to tour though, but in style.
METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see your band heading in 5 years?
A PERMANENT SHADOW: Touring in style.
