Darkthrone To Release “Goatlord: Original” In February

Darkthrone are planning to release “Goatlord” in its original instrumental form next month. Physical copies will be available on February 10, while digital copies will be available on February 24. Pre-orders can be found HERE.

The band shared more information regarding the release:

“‘Goatlord’ was the title of what was to originally be Darkthrone’s second album. The style followed very much in the vein of debut, ‘Soulside Journey’, with a mid-paced melodic, yet technical, death metal style. After the full completion of the tracks, however, focus shifted towards black metal and a more primitive style of composition & so the album was shelved, while work commenced on what was to be a black metal milestone, ‘A Blaze in the Northern Sky’, which incorporated some parts from the ‘Goatlord’ tracks.

‘Goatlord: Original’ contains these cult tracks in their original instrumental form, recorded in the band’s rehearsal space (vocals were added in the mid-90’s before an official release came through Moonfog Productions in 1996), with the classic line-up of Gylve ‘Fenris’ Nagell on drums, Ted Skjellum on lead guitar, Ivar Enger on Rhythm guitar, and Dag Nilsen on bass.

Darkthrone Premiere New Song “Caravan Of Broken Ghosts”

Darkthrone have premiered a new song titled “Caravan Of Broken Ghosts.” This track is from the band’s new album “Astral Fortress,” which will be released on October 28. Fenriz commented:

“There is a revisit vibe of ‘Quintessence’ at first, which is a total coincidence as it is Ted’s song and I wrote ‘Q.’ The song then explodes into fiercer metal, pounding and catching there as well, with clever riff shifts. And then the classic doom ending. Thank you, Ted”

Darkthrone To Release New Album “Astral Fortress” In October

Darkthrone have announced that they will be releasing a new album, titled “Astral Fortress,” on October 28. You can find a trailer for that effort below:

“Astral Fortress” Track Listing:

01. “Caravan Of Broken Ghosts”
02. “Impeccable Caverns Of Satan”
03. “Stalagmite Necklace”
04. “The Sea Beneath The Seas Of The Sea”
05. “Kevorkian Times”
06. “Kolbotn, West Of The Vast Forests”
07. “Eon 2”

Fenriz commented:

“As usual, Ted makes music by playing himself and riffs just come to me. I think since 2016’s ‘Arctic Thunder‘, we have mostly been inspired by our own back catalogue. I can hear many of my riffs eventually sounding like a plethora of bands but this seldom seems to correlate with what others hear. As you’ll know by now I never talk about the lyrics or the inspiration behind them and I would never want any lyrics that I like of others to be explained to me but I will tell you this, it is darker than ever, it is seething with hell.”

“Stranger Things” Actor Jamie Campbell Bower Listened To Mayhem, Darkthrone, Etc. To Prepare For The Role Of Vecna

Jamie Campbell Bower, the actor who played Vecna in “Stranger Things,” has revealed the bands that he listened to while preparing for the role. Among them are Sunn O))), Carpathian Forest, Darkthrone, and Mayhem.

Bower said the following during an appearance on the “Kyle Meredith With…” podcast:

“When I was prepping for Vecna, to get into Vecna, I would use a lot of bands like Sun 0))), Carpathian Forest, Darkthrone, Mayhem. A lot of black metal kind of stuff that I just really latched onto and thought, ‘Wow, this is great.’ There’s also something about the sensitivity in the way black metal is made and their belief system which I really fucking vibe with.”

He also added:

“That was Vecna getting into Vecna. Escaping Vecna… I’m a huge fan of Placebo. I love Placebo. And obviously Placebo covered Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” sometime in, I dunno, I guess it must have been the late ’90s, early 2000s. And so I would go with that. Why not stick to the theme that’s already in the show? But the song is so beautiful, we love Kate Bush, we stan Kate Bush… Or if I’m being really naughty, if someone wanted me to be naughty, and they asked, ‘What would you pick?’, I would say, ‘I dunno, fucking Miley Cyrus’ ‘Party in the USA” or something bollocks like that.”

Darkthrone Premiere New Song “Hate Cloak”

Darkthrone have premiered a new song titled “Hate Cloak.” This track is from the band’s new album “Eternal Hails……,“ which will be released on June 25. Fenriz commented:

“‘Hate Cloak’ is certainly the slowest song on the album. There are plenty of ‘fast’ parts on Ted’s songs, middle tempos and slow as well. The whole point of us having long songs is variation in tempos/pace, hence the epicness.”

Darkthrone To Release New Album “Eternal Hails……” In June

Darkthrone have announced that their new album “Eternal Hails……“ will be released on June 25. You can find a teaser for the effort below:

Here’s the track listing:

01. “His Master’s Voice” [07:17]
02. “Hate Cloak” [09:16]
03. “Wake Of The Awakened” [08:24]
04. “Voyage To A North Pole Adrift” [09:24]
05. “Lost Arcane City Of Uppakra” [07:02]

Fenriz described the record as “five heavy dinosaurs looking in wonder and bewilderment at the stars.” Nocturno Culto also added:

“When I was a kid growing up with metal I kept looking for bands with long songs. Black Sabbath had many, and Celtic Frost’s ‘Dawn Of Meggido’ had a long song, so I put that on in the record store and discovered another dimension of metal. Candlemass’ ‘Epicus Doomicus Metallicus’ had only long songs, so I think I bought that without even listening, and it was one of my best buys ever – an eternal inspiration for my entire career.

For us it has become a bit logical, hard to explain, but you get to build up for a different kind of listening A three-minute song is nothing we think of at the moment. We like it this way. For now.”

Pre-orders can be found HERE.

Darkthrone Premiere New Song “Duke Of Gloat”

Darkthrone have premiered a new song titled “Duke Of Gloat.” This track is from the band’s new album “Old Star,“ which will be released tomorrow (May 31). Ted “Nocturno Culto” Skjellum commented:

“‘Duke Of Gloat‘ was the first I wrote for this album. I like my metal black, with a dose of heavy. Now with Old Star coming your way let me wish you all a sore neck!”

Darkthrone Premiere New Song “The Hardship Of The Scots”

Darkthrone have premiered a new song titled “The Hardship Of The Scots.” This track is from the band’s new album “Old Star,“ which will be released on May 31.

Fenriz commented:

“HI ALL OF YOU! As you may know we have a new album coming out (I am not on social media at all anymore so I don’t know what you’ve seen or heard so far) and Ted said that this time our fans will hear a new song first. So guys here it is – our new track, “The Hardship Of The Scots” and since Ted and me always write our own songs, one song could not fully represent Old Star, but let’s start with this one

Normally the journalists and other scenesters get to check out new albums 2-3-4 months before fans get to hear it, but not this time .. you are first!
