Cannibal Corpse’s Alex Webster Opens Up About His Battle With Focal Dystonia

During an interview with Bass Player magazine, Cannibal Corpse’s Alex Webster discussed his battle with focal dystonia. That condition is a rare neurological disorder that involves involuntary spasms in small muscles in the body.

Webster said the following:

“Focal dystonia is essentially an injury, but not the kind of injury that people would normally think of — it’s not carpal tunnel, or a tendon problem, or something like that. It’s essentially a neurological problem, and it happens in a lot of disciplines that require precise, repetitive movements, and not just in music.”

He continued when asked about the symptoms:

“The normal fingerpicking that I would do would become very strained. It seemed as if my pointer finger would be going left instead of down. When I first noticed something was going wrong, it was very confusing and frightening. I was, like, ‘What’s going on with my right hand? Why isn’t it behaving the way it’s behaved for the past 30 years?’

Basically, the signals from your brain are going wrong on the way down to your fingers. Imagine your legs walking. What if the signal from your brain was telling both legs to go forward at the same time? That’s not exactly what was happening with my picking fingers, but certain signals were definitely getting through and certain signals weren’t.”

Webster also added that natural therapy helped solve his issues:

“I saw a specialist named Joaquin Farias, who helped me out very much, and I also spoke with a classical guitarist, Apostolos Paraskevas, and the bassist Scott Devine, who gave me tips on their bouts with this. It’s something that can often be resolved, which is good news for anyone who gets it. You just have to work through it, learn what you need to correct, and then take the time to correct it.”

Dee Snider Premieres New Song “Time To Choose” Featuring Cannibal Corpse’s George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher

Dee Snider (Twisted Sister) has premiered a lyric video for his new song “Time To Choose.” This track features George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher (Cannibal Corpse) and it will appear on Snider’s new album “Leave A Scar,“ which is set to be released on July 30. Snider commented:

“‘Time To Choose‘ deals with a subject I’ve addressed often over the course of my writing career: good vs. evil (see ‘Burn In Hell‘). Given the heaviness of this track, I felt adding George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher‘s voice to this would drive home the seriousness of the choices we make. I was honored when he agreed to contribute his incredibly powerful voice.”

Former Cannibal Corpse Guitarist Pat O’Brien Officially Sentenced Following 2018 Burglary And Assault

Pat O’Brien (ex-Cannibal Corpse) has officially been sentenced after being arrested on December 10, 2018 for burglary with assault and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer as his Northdale, FL home was burning. The guitarist has been ordered to pay $23,793.45 in restitution and will also be required to undergo drug and alcohol evaluations, render 150 hours of community service, and abstain from using alcohol and controlled substances. He will also be subject to random testing

During the initial incident, O’Brien reportedly called relatives to tell them that “the rapture” was coming and that “aliens have landed” before breaking into a Northdale home at around 6:57 PM while two people were inside. After he was told to leave, he pushed down a woman and ran into the backyard. One of the residents said he seemed to be hallucinating and that he spoke of “the rapture” to him as well. O’Brien also claimed “someone was after him” and even tried to hide in the closet.

Authorities found him hiding near a fence and they used an electronic control device to disarm him after he ran towards a deputy with a knife.

O’Brien‘s Northdale home was also on fire at the time of the incident. Hillsborough County firefighters had a hard time putting out the blaze due to exploding ammunition. Fire marshals found a ton of weapons, locked safes, and potentially explosive devices inside the house. In fact, the stockpile was so large that ATF agents were sent to look through the wreckage after the fire was out. The guitarist was apparently trying to get away from his burning house when responders arrived. He was arrested less than .5 miles away.

Neighbors say O’Brien was an “avid gun collector” and that he did not appear to show signs of odd behavior prior to the incident.

O’Brien made his first court appearance on December 11, 2018 and he was wearing an anti-suicide vest with his hands and feet restrained. The judge originally denied him bail until a drug test was conducted, but the musician ended up getting released from Hillsborough County jail on December 14, 2018 after posting a $50,000 surety bond.

Since then, Cannibal Corpse have parted ways with O’Brien and have moved forward with Hate Eternal’s Erik Rutan.

Erik Rutan Shares Guitar Playthrough Of New Cannibal Corpse Song “Condemnation Contagion”

Cannibal Corpse guitarist Erik Rutan has shared a playthrough of the band’s new song “Condemnation Contagion.“ That track is from the group’s new album “Violence Unimagined,” which will be released on April 16.

Rutan told Guitar World the following:

“This was the last song I completed writing for our new album Violence Unimagined. I was writing it as COVID-19 was becoming a full-on pandemic. Heavy and dark in its origins, it came out to be a song like nothing I have ever written before.

Since the song has a lot of two guitar-part harmonies and counterpoint, for this video I chose to feature the parts that stick out to me the most during the song at specific moments. A majority of the song is ferociously down-picked interweaving with other subtle elements. The solo is one of my personal favorites on the album. It has a nice feel and flow to it.”

Cannibal Corpse’s George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher Recalls The Time He Hung Out With Cher

During an interview with Metal Hammer, Cannibal Corpse’s George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher revealed that he once hung out with Cher at her house. The meeting happened about 15-20 years ago when the band were asked to perform at a birthday party for Cher‘s son Elijah Blue Allman (Deadsy).

Fisher said the following about the experience:

“Cher’s son Elijah, who is in the band Deadsy, is a big Cannibal Corpse fan and maybe 15 or 20 years ago he wanted us to come out to LA and play his birthday party at the Viper Room. His birthday is two days after mine, so my wife and I went out a few days early: ‘Let’s just fly out there, hang around for a few days, then we’ll play the show.’

The day before the show, Elijah invited us up to Cher’s house. When we got there, she wasn’t there – she was out shopping. I was like, ‘Yeah, of course Cher’s out shopping.’ But I didn’t know that she came back. I was talking to Elijah, and my wife starts hitting me on the arm. I go, ‘What?’ And she just whispers: ‘Cher!’ I’m like, ‘Ok, that’s cool, but it’s not like meeting King Diamond or Chuck Billy’, cos I’m in awe of those guys.

She was super-nice. We’re there and Cher is making food for us, and stuff. She came to the show as well. I apologized to her for having to listen to Cannibal Corpse, but she was, like, ‘No, I liked it.’ I’m, like, ‘Come on Cher, do the metal sign.’ And she goes, ‘Honey, I was metal before you were born.’ I’m, like, ‘Damn – I just got owned by Cher!’”

Cannibal Corpse Drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz Declines To Comment On Former Guitarist Pat O’Brien

As previously reported, Cannibal Corpse recently confirmed that Hate Eternal’s Erik Rutan has officially joined the band as their permanent guitarist. However, they never addressed the departure of former guitarist Pat O’Brien, who was arrested in 2018 for burglary with assault and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer as his Northdale, FL home was burning. Now, during an interview with Rock Talks, drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz was asked about his relationship with O’Brien and he responded with the following: “No comment on that.”
