The Amity Affliction Postpone European/UK Tour Due To Mental Health Issues

The Amity Affliction have postponed their European/UK tour due to mental health issues. The trek will now take place in early 2023 with Fit For A King, SeeYouSpaceCowboy, and Gideon set to open.

Vocalist Joel Birch issued the following statement:

“For anyone who has been following our band over the past 18 years it will come as no surprise that we as a band have had ongoing struggles with our mental health. We have never cancelled a tour. Ever. We have played almost dead, we have played crippled, we have played when I (Joel, who is writing this) have been close to killing myself, and not once have we ever pumped the brakes when we definitely should have.

We have had a system of time off between tours that has worked for us for the most part, but in the depths of Covid we agreed to break this structure as all we wanted to do at the times was tour. We committed to back to back USA and European tours and we are in a situation now where we can’t consciously embark safely on both tours and need to briefly pump the brakes.

Some members of the band need to seek help for their mental health, issues that were compounded during the worst of Covid. We are at a point where if we were to force them to continue our European tour as it stands, directly after the US tour, we would risk having to face a situation far worse than a cancelled tour, and that’s not a risk we are willing – nor should anyone be willing – to take.

This is not a decision we have taken lightly, in fact this is the fastest selling headline tour we have announced, but what matters to us foremost is making sure that our brothers have the space and time to tackle the parts of their lives that need to be addressed. Sadly, within the music industry – and indeed the larger entertainment and hospitality industries within which we coexist – the schedules that artists are expected to keep maintaining to remain relevant are brutal.

This has created a culture and an atmosphere that almost rewards abuse, which leads to extremely poor mental health issues that mostly roll on disregarded. The music industry is a behemoth that moves on without the artists it spits out, and so if we were to ignore this situation and abandon the love we have for our friends, EXPECTING them to embark on a timeline of touring that would very likely destroy them and us, life would go, just not for us. Not for our band. Not for all the people who love them, and not for our, our extremely loyal and beloved fans.

Thankfully this is FAR from a break up statement. It’s just us, asking for your understanding as we move our European tour and give our friends and brothers the time to heal some wounds that have been left unattended. Without a debut we will be back in Europe and the UK, it will just be a little later than planned. The US tour will go ahead as scheduled, and all future plans are still in place.

We do apologize – deeply and sincerely – for this move, but as I have stated above, sometimes you need to pump the brakes, and that time for us is now.”

Townsend commented:

“Originally planned for April and May, I’m happy to see these shows being rescheduled for next year. The delay in mixing my upcoming album Lightwork meant I simply couldn’t tour the album anymore and we replaced the tour as Special Guests for Dream Theater which comes to an end today with the last show in Istanbul. I’m now going to focus on mixing the Lightwork 5.1 and catch up on some much-needed downtime with the family. More news on Lightwork is soon to come and I hope to see you all at the shows!”

Notably, he also added that he intends to tour less in the foreseeable future:

“Hey all 🙂 I’ve decided to not tour nearly as much any more, as I want to focus on The Moth musical, my mental health and my family, as well as many other creative ventures. I love making music so much and I have so much in Line to create and I am going to focus on doing just that.

However I will still do the odd run here and there so I can see you all 🙂 here’s the next run for the upcoming Lightwork album. Lightwork is essentially a ‘bridge’ between where I was and where I’m going. It’s simple, clean, and refreshing. (Sounds like a diet soda when phrased like that…:) it’s more ‘Tears For Fears’ than ‘Metallica’ if you know what I mean, and I like it a lot. these dates are for next year and I hope to see some of you there… more information soon ❤️”

Khemmis Cancel West Coast Tour

Khemmis have officially cancelled their headlining West Coast tour. The band commented:

“As you have likely surmised, we must cancel our West Coast headlining tour dates this summer. The Opeth/Mastodon trek this spring is an incredible opportunity for us, and we are thrilled to join these two legendary bands on the road. Given the proximity of those dates with the rescheduled headlining ones and the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between time with our families and time on the road, these headlining shows just aren’t feasible this summer. Thank y’all for understanding, and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at all of our upcoming dates with the mighty Opeth and Mastodon.”
