  • Bobby Gustafson (Ex-Overkill) Offers Update On His Painward Project

    During a recent appearance on the Pod Scum podcast, Bobby Gustafson (ex-Overkill) offered an update on his Painward project. According to him, the band “might have something out by the end of the year in ’26.”

    Gustafson said the following:

    “Last year I did a little EP for SATANS TAINT, and that was just for fun. So I’m gonna kind of get rid of that. And I’ve been writing songs ever since [I left] VIO-LENCE, which was three years ago now. So I’ve got songs together. [I’m] just trying to find the right guys. I’ve been working with [guitarist] Dave Orman from NASTY SAVAGE. I’ve been with him the longest. And lately, I guess I’m hooking up with [ex-OVERKILL and FLOTSAM AND JETSAM and current SHADOWS FALL and CATEGORY 7 drummer] Jason Bittner. He seems like a great guy. I just reached out to him. I never knew him before, and I reached out to him after the whole thing I saw where he left OVERKILL as well. And I just wanted to make sure that he was getting what he should be. And we just became friends. We kept talking. I have four songs I sent him. He’s got one song he did drums to. When he finishes up with the CATEGORY 7/John Bush thing, he’s gonna come back and work on the other songs and try and get the rest of everything together.”

    He continued:

    “I’ve got a couple of bass players floating around. I did a lot of pre-production with my usual drummer, Jim McCourt. He helped out getting the songs together. But we’re gonna try and search out a singer, I guess, once we get this demo. But these songs, they’ve been written for a while, and they’re still strong. I still like them all. But I’m continuing to write, just in case something magical happens.”

    He also added the following when asked about the possibility of a 2026 release:

    “Yeah, I’m hoping, because I really wanted it to be ’25, but this year’s gone. It all depends on Jason and his availability. I’ve got the songs. He hasn’t heard everything yet, so I’m gonna try and sit down with him and say, ‘Hey, these are all the songs I have. If you’re cool with these 10, or if there’s one you don’t like, we’ll grab another one.’ I’ve just got a whole list of songs, and that’s kind of new for me, ’cause I used to just write, ’cause we had no time back in the day. I wrote what went on the albums, and that was it. There really wasn’t much extra. But now I’m writing a lot and now, and I’m picking the best from them. So as soon as he can get finished up with that stuff, get into these songs with me, we can try and get a singer from those four songs. If it’s quick enough, early enough in the year, we might have something out by the end of the year in ’26.”

  • Death Angel’s Mark Osegueda: “It’s Gonna Be Quite Some Time Till A New Full-Length Comes Out”

    During an appearance on the That Metal Interview podcast, Death Angel singer Mark Osegueda offered an update on the band’s upcoming album. According to him, “it’s gonna be quite some time till a new full-length comes out.”

    Osegueda said the following:

    “We have some more stuff recorded that we’ll be releasing. But right now we’re also writing for the full-length. We have no studio time booked to actually record it. We’re still writing and doing some demos for that. So it’s gonna be quite some time till a new full-length comes out. But we’ll release a couple of songs here and there. But a full-length is definitely gonna happen in the future, for sure.”

    He also added:

    “Yeah, well, it’s gonna be a bit, for sure, ’cause we’ve got some touring to do and we’ve still got some writing to do and some demoing of the stuff. So I’m saying, if anything, it’d be — the earliest would be the tail end of 2026.”

  • Deafheaven Streaming New Mini-Documentary “The Vast Sterling Purple” Via Veeps

    Deafheaven have released a new mini-documentary, titled “The Vast Sterling Purple,” via Veeps. The film was shot by Sean Stout and Liam Stewart and it focuses on the band’s recent tour with Harm’s Way and I Promised The World. That trek found them playing in less conventional places.

    Vocalist George Clarke commented:

    “It’s more about connecting with people who don’t normally get to see the band and going out to them and giving them as good a show as you would in those other places. Going to college towns and going to smaller suburbs, going to places where people do not go to as many shows, you never know what the reaction is going to be.”

    He also added the following about writing music for live sets:

    “Early on, that was a real motivation because there isn’t a huge blueprint for what we do, a lot of what we create is done in a way that is sort of flying blind. We have enough records under our belt, and a lot of experimentation having been done over those albums, I think we arrived at a place that was very comfortable. I really thought that, for us to get our point across, I had to do the thing I’ve always done, which is reach in and assess my own life and the things that have made me me, to a much stronger degree.”

  • Heartsick Premiere “Sinister” Music Video

    Heartsick have premiered a new video for their song “Sinister.” That track is from the band’s latest album “Break The Curse.” Vocalist Alfonso Civile commented:

    “All of us are big monster-movie fans—films like ‘Cloverfield‘, ‘Pacific Rim‘, and the entire ‘Godzilla‘ vault. They’re the kind of movies that get us excited. In recent years, Godzilla has made a huge comeback in theaters, and when we were in the studio putting songs together, someone asked what the lyrics for this track should be. I don’t know—In that moment I just said, ‘Let’s make it about Godzilla.’ It felt angry, visceral, like some giant beast was coming to wreak havoc.”

  • As I Lay Dying’s Tim Lambesis On The Band’s New Lineup: “They Deserve To Be Part Of The Good Things Ahead”

    As I Lay Dying’s Tim Lambesis has reflected on this past year in a new post commemorating his 45th birthday. The vocalist described 2024 as “dark,” while also looking ahead to the future. He also took time to praise the band’s new lineup, saying “they deserve to be part of the good things ahead.”

    Lambesis said the following:

    “Last year’s birthday was the worst of my entire life.
    I was carrying more anxiety and depression than I’d ever known — feeling trapped, threatened, and unsure if there was even a safe way to make the changes I desperately needed.
    It was dark. And the thought of wishing I had never been born was something I wrestled with more than I’d ever admit.

    But facing that fear forced huge transformations in both my personal and professional life.
    Slowly, the weight started to lift, and meaningful connection with the people closest to me began to give me life again.

    This year looks completely different.
    I’m in a place where I genuinely appreciate — and feel appreciated by — the people around me.
    There’s a deeper level of friendship in my life than I’ve ever known, and a sense of peace I’ve been missing for most of my life.

    I get to have weekly dinners with my whole family.
    I fall asleep knowing my needs are met without having to plead, over-explain, or even ask.
    That community lines up beautifully with the personal work I’ve been doing — sometimes alone, sometimes with the guidance of someone who really knows what they’re doing.

    And on top of that, I get to finish writing all the music I started earlier this year with a group of guys I’ve known for a long time — guys who took the time to understand me even more deeply when I was at my lowest.
    They deserve to be part of the good things ahead.

    I’m sorry for the slow replies — social anxiety still sneaks up on me, especially with the pressure of our phones — but your messages meant the world.
    I felt loved. And I’m grateful.”

    As I Lay Dying’s latest return follows a 2024 mass exodus that saw everyone exit the band except Lambesis. The controversial vocalist, who previously served prison time for trying to hire a hitman to kill one of his former wives, was left in that position after footage of him engaging in altercations with his latest wife and their dog surfaced online.

  • SPEED Awarded New South Wales Music Prize

    SPEED have scored $80,000 AUD (about $52,000 USD) after winning the New South Wales Music Prize. The band were recognized for the “significant impact” made by their latest album “ONLY ONE MODE.”

    SPEED commented:

    “Respectfully, our culture has never been a game nor a competition. But we are honoured to receive this recognition and see this as acknowledgment of the values cultivated by the passionate souls around us.”

    They also added:

    “In 2025, we have a whole new generation of amazing kids all over the country making Sydney and Australian hardcore the sickest it’s ever been. With that being said, this award belongs to them – the people around us who make it what it is – and we’ll take some time to think about the best way we can pay that forward to keep growing this the right way.”

  • Iron Reagan Added To 2026 Milwaukee Metal Fest

    Iron Reagan have been added to next year’s Milwaukee Metal Fest. That event will take place at The Rave/Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee, WI on June 5-7. A pre-party will also be held on June 4. Previously announced acts include: Acid Bath, Belushi Speed Ball, and Morta Skuld. Co-organizer Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed) commented:

    “Stars keep aligning for ‘Milwaukee Metal Fest‘ & it’s been hard to contain my excitement! Thrash & hardcore have always had a place at MMF & Iron Reagan back on the attack means the mosh will go HARD in the good land June 5-7th 2026!”

    Iron Reagan frontman Tony Foresta added:

    “‘Milwaukee Metal Fest‘ is one of the classic metal festivals, and we’re very excited to be hitting the stage with the original lineup for a rare appearance this year. We don’t play often — if you want to catch us live, this is the one to make. Looking forward to playing all these songs again for you all.”
