Black Veil Brides, Ex-Slayer, Etc. Members Involved In New Animated “Dark Nights: Death Metal” Short Film

The first episode of DC Comics‘ “Dark Nights: Death Metal” series has been shared online. The short film is based on the comic series by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo and it features a score by Tyler Bates (“Guardians Of The Galaxy”, “John Wick”). A number of rock/metal musicians are also involved including Dave Lombardo (ex-Slayer, etc.), who contributed percussion, Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society, etc.), who contributed guitar fx, Andy Biersack (Black Veil Brides), who voiced Batman, and Chelsea Wolfe, who voiced Wonder Woman. Carach Angren‘s “Skull With A Forked Tongue” can also be heard during the credits.

In related news, Loma Vista Recordings will also be releasing the “Dark Nights: Death Metal The Original Soundtrack” in 2021. A teaser of Rise Against‘s “Broken Dreams, Inc.” from the effort can be found below. The full track is expected to be released on Wednesday (September 16). Bates said the following about the soundtrack:

“In ‘Dark Nights: Death Metal‘, Loma Vista Recordings and I saw an opportunity to bring artists together to create a diverse soundtrack that is inspired directly by this incredible comic series. Our intent is not to literally create a death metal soundtrack, but instead, to illuminate the darkest corners of each character’s psyche from an authentic perspective that is thematically inherent in death metal music.

But a soundtrack is merely a collection of songs unless it is holistically intertwined with the story teller’s original work. With the support of DC and Loma Vista Recordings, and with the help of several artists, I’m creating a short-form animatic film series derived from Greg Capullo‘s original artwork for ‘Dark Nights: Death Metal‘.

I’ve invited artists on the soundtrack, and pop-culture personalities alike, to voice the characters illustrated in Scott and Greg‘s masterful take on classic DC characters. This has possibly never been more relevant to real life than the challenging time the world is currently experiencing.”

Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath added:

“Personally, being involved with this soundtrack is really fantastic, Growing up, my little brother and I would ride our bikes to the newsstand near our house and spend all our money on the latest comic books, and Batman was a favorite.

Also, Zach, our guitarist, is probably the biggest comic book geek in our band. He’s talked about how, along with his brother and father, they were all big DC fans – Batman, Robin, Superman, Aquaman, all the comic book series, the TV shows, and feature films. So, yes, we’re all very excited about being part of this.”

Black Label Society’s John “JD” DeServio: “We’re Definitely Gonna Be Doing A New Record”

During a recent interview with Meltdown of Detroit’s WRIF, Black Label Society’s John “JD” DeServio revealed that the band are planning to work on a new album. The bassist said the effort was supposed to be recorded already, but the coronavirus pandemic hindered their plans.

DeServio said the following:

“We were supposed to have a record recorded already. So, who knows when that’s gonna happen. Stay tuned. Hopefully sooner than later. And all the shows, I think they all got canceled this year for everybody, which really, really sucks. But we’re definitely gonna be doing a new record. So keep tuned for that one.”

He continued after being asked if the group have already written new music for the effort:

“I’m sure Zakk’s [Wylde] got a bunch of riffs written. I’m sure he does.”

DeServio also added the following about the songwriting process:

“Zakk just comes up with riffs and ideas, and then we put ’em down and make a song out of it, and then that’s it. It’s pretty easy. It’s pretty simple. A lot of times, he’ll have the whole song done and then will throw down the guitar for us and then we build. A lot of times we’ll just be in the studio and he comes up with stuff and then we just start jamming on it and make that a song. Like, ‘Crazy Horse’ was the last song written on that ‘Order Of The Black’ record [2010], and it was the opening song. We had to spend an extra week doing something, and if we never did that extra week, we wouldn’t have gotten a couple of them songs, which is pretty cool.”
