The track confronts the reality of those who hide behind false loyalty, only to turn their backs when it matters most. • Godflesh Announce Penultimate Studio Album “Decay”

Godflesh will be releasing their penultimate studio album, “Decay,” on September 25. The effort’s first single, “Living/Ending,” can be found below.

    “Decay” Track Listing:

    01. “Master And Slave“
    02. “Living/Ending“
    03. “Feral Colony“
    04. “Fear Of Man“
    05. “Fodder“
    06. “Consume Me“

    Vocalist/guitarist Justin Broadrick commented:

“Music for me, is rarely complete, but it has to reach a point where enough is enough. Creatively, there has to be self-discipline. One has to end it.

‘Decay‘ was born from the same sessions as ‘Purge‘. It was one huge pool of songs. I picked what I felt was appropriate for what I wanted to achieve with ‘Purge‘, with the intention of releasing the songs that didn’t fit as a new album within a year of ‘Purge‘ being released. Unfortunately, two years passed whilst considering external labels, so that I didn’t have to self-release Godflesh anymore, but it took an awful lot of time to establish a comfortable home for me. The recordings were done, but as usual for me, I did change a lot of stuff once I came back to it.

Fortunately, all of the recordings for ‘Decay‘ were completed long before the surgery, vocals included… although the back end of a couple of songs were recorded with the hernia itself, and that was a struggle. I was already aware that the Godflesh shout, so to speak, was exacerbating the hernia greatly, as was every Godflesh performance in the lead-up to the surgery once the hernia appeared, and the hernia was mostly caused by year upon year of shouting in Godflesh. The album was mixed post-surgery, and while I was still in some pain and considerable discomfort, but fortunately Godflesh is generally me expressing my pain, albeit [usually] mental, philosophical and existential, whereas this was physical pain.

It expresses my pain, and I’ve put my body and soul into this expression for the majority of my existence. I feel quite lucky, because Godflesh is now physically impossible for me, rendering it useless. I now wish to move out of its constraints, move on creatively with heavy/ugly music to new ground.”

  • Burial Path Part Ways With Vocalist, Bassist, And Drummer

Burial Path have parted ways with vocalist Maya Pobst, bassist Christian Caringer, and drummer Nola Veru. Despite this, guitarists Matthew McClure and Martin Rosa III plan to continue.

    The band commented:

“We have some bittersweet news to share with you all. Maya has decided to step down as the vocalist of Burial Path. We wish her the best in her new music adventures and can’t wait to see the big accomplishments she achieves!

We are also sad to announce that Christian has also decided to step down as the bassist for Burial Path. We wish him well in his future musical endeavors.

Nola has also decided to step down as our drummer due to her crazy schedule with her work and her main band Sidefect. They’re in the middle of a lot of recording, so we’re excited to hear the new music.

We are grateful for Maya’s, Christian’s, and Nola’s contributions, dedication, and hard work they put into Burial Path during their tenure. We had a lot of adventures and fun in their short tenure. They all will be dearly missed.

What does this mean for Burial Path? We will be taking a short break as we fire up auditions to fill all of the positions. Thank you all for your incredible support and encouragement, it seriously keeps us going. You will hear from us again shortly!”

  • Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore To Perform With Deep Purple For The First Time Since 1993

Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore is planning to make a guest appearance during Deep Purple’s August 12 show at the Northwell at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York. It will be the 81-year-old’s first performance with the band since 1993.

    Blackmore commented:

“There is something we wanted to mention about tomorrow night… Well, it is a secret and I don’t want anybody to know, but I’m probably get up and do an encore with the band, Deep Purple. But you can’t tell anybody, and I know that this is gonna be kept a secret. And will it? I suppose so.”

“I actually called up… I didn’t call him up, I sent my A.I. pigeon to [singer] Ian Gillan in Portugal, where he lives at the moment. And I said, ‘How would you feel about if I got up just for an encore? Just one of the songs. I don’t want to intrude.’ And I said, ‘No pressure — just kind of [for] old times’ sake.’ I’m 81 now. So he seemed to love the idea, put it to the band, got a thumbs up, and it looks like we might be doing that.”

“I have my roadie there kind of now, setting up my amplifier. But I’ll be using a small amplifier, but it’s very loud. It’s what I use when I record. I hope I can compete with the guitar player [Simon McBride], ’cause I can see that he has very big amplifiers behind him. So, it’d probably just be the one number, as it’s been a while. I changed my strings on my Strat, which I haven’t done in over 25 years… I hope the guy out in the front can turn me up. I’ve got my roadie there for a soundcheck.”

He also commented on his physical issues:

“I did have my injection in my lumbar area yesterday. It’s a special injection I have that enables me to stand in one spot, because if I’m playing a Strat on stage, I have a hard time with the shoulders and the lumbar area. I’ve got four herniated discs, if anybody wants them. And I had my injection yesterday of a steroid which helps me get through standing up on stage. But I do have a kind of a stool there just in case I start toppling over or something. But I know that Ian Gillan has his maladies too with his eyesight, I think. And so as you get older, you collect all these things… And fusion is out of the question. That’s too big a job. But the stem cell stuff looks interesting. So I’m kind of recovering from that at the moment. I’m on steroid. And it’s very hard to sleep when you’re on steroids, but I’m on one steroid. And thanks to the doctors at Stony Brook [University Hospital]; they were excellent. I didn’t feel hardly any pain. But I think we’ve all got something to complain about. I just have more things to complain about than usual. And if don’t complain, I’ll find something to complain about.”

He then circled back to the show:

“[Simon] is a very good guitar player. As was, and is, [former guitarist] Steve Morse, is a great guitar player.

So, that’s gonna be interesting. I have not played rock music in 25 years, actually. It’ll be good to see the old guys again. I think we’ll all be on crutches and wheelchairs and things, although I think the rest of them are okay. But, yes, it’s kind of frightening. I haven’t played rock in 25 years… I’ve been playing acoustic guitar for 25 years, and at first I was very uncomfortable playing it, but I got used to it, and now I’m used to playing the acoustic more so than the electric.”

    He also added:

“I just thought it might be an idea to let a few people know ’cause I think a lot of people would like to see that. So hopefully my guitar stays in tune, and I can play whatever song is going to be played. It’s just the one song, I think.”
