Concert Review: Royal Blood & Cleopatrick In Oakland, CA

Yesterday (May 3), I attended Royal Blood and Cleopatrick’s show at the Fox Theater in Oakland, CA and it was a fun night of pure rock ‘n’ roll.

Cleopatrick opened the concert with a killer set. Singer/guitarist Ian Fraser and drummer Luke Guntz were very energetic as they powered through a variety of songs from their catalog. They really helped set the vibe for the show with a grungy display of alternative rock.

After Cleopatrick finished up, it was time for the headliners of the evening, Royal Blood. The band were firing on all cylinders as they blasted through a catchy set driven by Mike Kerr’s heavy bass riffs and alt-rock vocals and Ben Thatcher’s thunderous drums. The sheer talent of the two musicians was also complimented by touring member Darren James, who contributed keyboards and backing vocals to enhance the dancier material from the band’s latest album “Typhoons.”

In addition to the powerful display of musicianship, the band also had a solid stage production full of flashing lights. The colors and strobe effects helped add to the experience without taking away from the the group’s musical prowess, which served as the main focal point of the show.

As for the setlist, it was mostly composed of songs from their self-titled record and “Typhoons,” with a couple of songs from “How Did We Get So Dark?” thrown in for good measure. The band also performed their latest single “Honeybrains,” much to the delight of the crowd. Everyone sang and a danced to every song, while the band appeared to be having the time of their lives onstage.

All in all, the performance was absolutely phenomenal. Some highlights from the set included: “Boilermaker,” “Trouble’s Coming,” “Blood Hands,” “Figure It Out,” and the epic closer “Out Of The Black.”

“‘HONEYBRAINS’ is out now! Instead of sitting on new music, waiting for it to grow old, we thought it’d be fun to let you in on what we’ve been working on over the past few weeks before we head out on our biggest tour so far! It’s as new to us as it is to you. Crank it x”

Royal Blood Premiere “Boilermaker” Video

Royal Blood have premiered a new video for their new song “Boilermaker.” This track is from the band’s new album “Typhoons,” which will be released on April 30. Mike Kerr said the following:

“Boilermaker – a shot of whisky followed immediately by a glass of beer as a chaser. This is written a report from the front line of my own self destruction. Chasing all things toxic no matter how grotesque the combination. However, the marriage of talent involved in its creation was a delicious one. It’s bones discovered in I Know I Know’s bedroom. Produced by the Jedi master Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age. A life changing experience we will be forever grateful for. And finally a massive thank you to Liam Lynch for creating such a stone cold masterpiece of a video.”

Royal Blood Premiere New Song “Limbo”

Royal Blood have premiered a new song titled “Limbo.” This track is from the band’s new album “Typhoons,” which will be released on April 30. The band commented:

Royal Blood Premiere “Typhoons” Music Video

Royal Blood have premiered a new video for the title track of their new album “Typhoons.” That effort will be released on April 30. The band previously said the following about the song:

“‘Typhoons’ is what it sounds like to be truly lost in your own thoughts to a hellish extent but also about how dark spells, much like storms are not permanent. This song was one those special moments where the process didn’t resemble writing whatsoever. More like being tethered to the earth, receiving holy lightning. Look after each other and crank this until you see smoke.”

The band said the following about the new song:

“‘Typhoons’ is what it sounds like to be truly lost in your own thoughts to a hellish extent but also about how dark spells, much like storms are not permanent. This song was one those special moments where the process didn’t resemble writing whatsoever. More like being tethered to the earth, receiving holy lightning. Look after each other and crank this until you see smoke.”

Mike Kerr also added the following about the new record:

“We sort of stumbled on this sound, and it was immediately fun to play. That’s what sparked the creativity on the new album, the chasing of that feeling. It’s weird, though – if you think back to ‘Figure it Out’, it kind of contains the embryo of this album. We realised that we didn’t have to completely destroy what we’d created so far; we just had to shift it, change it. On paper, it’s a small reinvention. But when you hear it, it sounds so fresh.”
