King Diamond Offers Updates On New Solo And Mercyful Fate Albums

During an appearance on “The Electric Theater With Clown,” the show hosted by Slipknot’s M. Shawn “Clown” Crahan, King Diamond offered an update on the new music that he has been working on. The material will eventually surface in the form of new albums from both King Diamond and Mercyful Fate.

Diamond said the following:

“I’m writing with Hank [Shermann, guitar] from MERCYFUL FATE and writing with Andy [LaRocque, guitar] for KING DIAMOND and writing on my own for KING DIAMOND. For KING DIAMOND, it’s an album that’s gonna be called ‘The Institute’, which is part one of two — there’ll be two full albums that will be completing a full story. And as the title [suggests], there’s gonna be some crazy weird stuff. And for MERCY, I also have the title, but I’m not giving it out to anybody at the moment. We have the front cover for the new MERCY too. It’s very correct, very right for MERCYFUL FATE. It’s very back to basics.”

He also added:

“For my part, with both MERCY and KING albums — even more KING DIAMOND, I would say — all vocals are gonna be lead vocals again, like they were in the old days. It didn’t matter if there was a choir singing on the right side or the left side, or whatever, they would still go and pick up parts of the lyrics to progress the story and so on. So it’s gonna be anything goes with the vocals, for sure — back to the old style. And for MERCY too, it’s gonna be very old-fashioned — Hank is writing very much like the old days. And it’s nice to feel that we can capture that again. So that’s two albums that are being worked on that will be done by the time we can go out and tour again, I’m sure.”

In other news, Diamond also revealed that an “Abigail” graphic novel is currently in the works:

“[We are working with] a really good company. I have high, high hopes for how that’s gonna turn out.”

Hank Shermann Says He Has “About Six Or Seven” New Mercyful Fate Songs Written

Mercyful Fate were planning to return to the live stage this year, but their plans have been derailed by the coronavirus pandemic. Despite this, fans still have something to look forward to as the band are working on new music.

Guitarist Hank Shermann told Heavy the following about the impact that the pandemic has had on their shows:

“This totally [knocked] out all shows for 2020, I predict, and as it looks now, all MERCYFUL FATE shows look to be canceled. We might have an option in November [to do something], maybe, but who knows how it looks at that time?”

He also added the following about new music:

“First of all, King [Diamond] is living in Texas, in the States. I’m living here north of Copenhagen, in Denmark. The drummer [Bjarne T. Holm] is also here, so I work with him in the rehearsal room shaping the new songs. The other guitar player [Mike Wead] is in Stockholm, Sweden, and our new bass player [Joey Vera] is in Los Angeles. So everything is [being done via] Dropbox or e-mails.”

“I have been working at least the last one and a half years on new MERCYFUL FATE songs, and I think there’s about six or seven [tracks that are] about to be ready. The first song has been sent to King after it’s been mixed and all the guys played on the song. So I sent the files to Joey in Los Angeles; he did the bass. And then I sent the same files to Mike in Stockholm; he did his solos. And now King has the first song, evaluating for the vocals to be added. And then we will rearrange certain parts to be twice as long and stuff like that.”

Mercyful Fate Bassist Timi Hansen Passes Away

Mercyful Fate bassist Timi Hansen has sadly passed away following a battle with cancer. He was 61 years old.

Mercyful Fate frontman King Diamond commented:

“I just found out that I lost one of my dearest friends, who has been fighting cancer for a long time, in such an incredibly brave way.

He was not just my roommate on the early Mercyful Fate tours, but he was always my favorite bass player of all times.

I was fortunate to have been able to visit him at his apartment with some other good friends, and we had a great afternoon that will never be forgotten.

When I last talked to Timi on the phone on October 24th, I could understand that things had gotten tougher than they ever were, and yet he said “we fight on”.

I feel so so sad for his entire family, you have my absolute deepest sympathy.

Rest in Peace my dear dear friend.
King“

Michael Denner Says He Wasn’t Approached About Taking Part In The Upcoming Mercyful Fate Reunion

Michael Denner has officially commented on his absence from the upcoming Mercyful Fate reunion. He told Metalized the following [translated from Danish]:

“I was not asked to join, and was told only two days before it was public news. I think it’s a pity for the fans of the original MERCYFUL FATE. Especially since I’m in the shape of my life right now. But now it’s just a matter of putting it behind me, and look forward to the release of the upcoming DENNER’S INFERNO album ‘In Amber’.”
