Hank Shermann Says He Has “About Six Or Seven” New Mercyful Fate Songs Written

Mercyful Fate were planning to return to the live stage this year, but their plans have been derailed by the coronavirus pandemic. Despite this, fans still have something to look forward to as the band are working on new music.

Guitarist Hank Shermann told Heavy the following about the impact that the pandemic has had on their shows:

“This totally [knocked] out all shows for 2020, I predict, and as it looks now, all MERCYFUL FATE shows look to be canceled. We might have an option in November [to do something], maybe, but who knows how it looks at that time?”

He also added the following about new music:

“First of all, King [Diamond] is living in Texas, in the States. I’m living here north of Copenhagen, in Denmark. The drummer [Bjarne T. Holm] is also here, so I work with him in the rehearsal room shaping the new songs. The other guitar player [Mike Wead] is in Stockholm, Sweden, and our new bass player [Joey Vera] is in Los Angeles. So everything is [being done via] Dropbox or e-mails.”

“I have been working at least the last one and a half years on new MERCYFUL FATE songs, and I think there’s about six or seven [tracks that are] about to be ready. The first song has been sent to King after it’s been mixed and all the guys played on the song. So I sent the files to Joey in Los Angeles; he did the bass. And then I sent the same files to Mike in Stockholm; he did his solos. And now King has the first song, evaluating for the vocals to be added. And then we will rearrange certain parts to be twice as long and stuff like that.”

Mercyful Fate Bassist Timi Hansen Passes Away

Mercyful Fate bassist Timi Hansen has sadly passed away following a battle with cancer. He was 61 years old.

Mercyful Fate frontman King Diamond commented:

“I just found out that I lost one of my dearest friends, who has been fighting cancer for a long time, in such an incredibly brave way.

He was not just my roommate on the early Mercyful Fate tours, but he was always my favorite bass player of all times.

I was fortunate to have been able to visit him at his apartment with some other good friends, and we had a great afternoon that will never be forgotten.

When I last talked to Timi on the phone on October 24th, I could understand that things had gotten tougher than they ever were, and yet he said “we fight on”.

I feel so so sad for his entire family, you have my absolute deepest sympathy.

Rest in Peace my dear dear friend.
King“

Michael Denner Says He Wasn’t Approached About Taking Part In The Upcoming Mercyful Fate Reunion

Michael Denner has officially commented on his absence from the upcoming Mercyful Fate reunion. He told Metalized the following [translated from Danish]:

“I was not asked to join, and was told only two days before it was public news. I think it’s a pity for the fans of the original MERCYFUL FATE. Especially since I’m in the shape of my life right now. But now it’s just a matter of putting it behind me, and look forward to the release of the upcoming DENNER’S INFERNO album ‘In Amber’.”

Mercyful Fate’s Timi Hansen Is Battling Cancer

When Mercyful Fate announced their reunion yesterday (August 1), the band said bassist Timi Hansen would be missing their upcoming shows and that Joey Vera (Armored Saint, etc.) would be filling in. Hansen has now issued his own statement saying his absence is related to his ongoing battle with cancer.

Hansen said the following:

“There are many questions about why I won’t appear as part of the Mercyful Fate reunion in 2020.

The honest explanation is simply that I am currently fighting a fight against cancer.

But believe me I will fight everything I can to be ready.

It’s my big dream to be on stage again playing the old Mercyful Fate numbers in front of all of you very loyal fans.

If this wasn’t going to happen, I’d like to ask you to take good care of Joey Vera.

I totally agree with King [Diamond] that [Vera] is a perfect ‘Stand in’, so take good care of him 🤘🤘🤘”

Mercyful Fate To Reunite For 2020 European Shows

Mercyful Fate have announced that they will be reuniting for some summer European shows next year. The group are currently booked for the Copenhell festival, which is set to take place in Copenhagen, Denmark on June 17-20. Further dates have yet to be announced.

The band commented:

“We will be playing an unspecified number of concerts throughout Europe during the summer of 2020, including COPENHELL.

It will be the “9” lineup, featuring:

Hank Shermann – Guitar

King Diamond – Vocals

Bjarne T Holm – Drums

Mike Wead – Guitar

with Joey Vera on the bass while Timi Hansen is away.

We asked Joey Vera (Armored Saint, Fates Warning) to fill in because he has a very unique style and sound playing with his fingers, much like that of Timi Hansen. This is very important, since the set list will only consist of songs from the very first “mini LP”, the “Melissa” album, and the “Don’t Break The Oath” album, plus some brand new songs written specifically in that very same style.

This will very much be Mercyful Fate as we were in the very beginning, except for a brand new major stage production.

See you at the Ruined Bridge.

Stay Heavy

Mercyful Fate“
