Former Megadeth Bassist David Ellefson On The Band’s Upcoming Farewell: “Put It Away With Grace And Go Enjoy The Rest Of Your Life”
During an interview with Alternative Nation, ex-Megadeth bassist David Ellefson further addressed frontman Dave Mustaine’s decision to end the band following a new album and farewell tour. He says if it has to be done, “put it away with grace and go enjoy the rest of your life.”
Ellefson said the following:
“Honestly, I don’t think about it that much. I think probably everybody else thinks about it more for me than I do for me.
It’s been a rocky road, for sure, obviously, and there have been moments sublime and there have been moments that I just scratch my head over, but at the end of the day… Look, Dave said four and a half years ago he doesn’t wanna play music with me anymore, so I just left it there and just moved on. I’m not sitting around waiting for a call. I’ve already offered, if it should come my way, I’d be happy to participate on some level.
What we saw in Birmingham [at BLACK SABBATH’s ‘Back To The Beginning’ event], in my opinion, was 100% on point the right way to say goodbye,” Ellefson continued. “You bring back the O.G.s — Geezer [Butler], Tony [Iommi], Bill [Ward] and Ozzy [Osbourne]; the four O.G.s — ’cause, obviously, they went through their… Look, they fired Bill [at some point earlier in their career], they fired Ozzy, and at some point they’re back together. The four guys that started it all get to say goodbye together, to each other, to the fans, the fans say goodbye to them. So, to me, that is the model of how it’s done. I mean, that is a hundred percent the right way to do it.”
He also added:
“If it really is a farewell, if it really is, and it’s not just an attempt to boost ticket sales, ’cause we’ve seen this movie before — boost ticket sales, go away, then the bigger offers come after everybody’s gone away for a couple years; I mean, we’ve seen how this works — but, look, if Dave needs to shut it down and call it quits because he is just had enough and he’s been through it all, then hey, you know what? As a still friend to him, even we haven’t spoken almost five years — you know what? God bless you, brother. Put it away with grace and go enjoy the rest of your life. So if he really is shutting it down and he’s really gonna put it away, then please do so with dignity and grace and do what you say and mean what you say. ‘Cause I think that farewell thing has been thrown around so much by so many people that it doesn’t have much weight to it. We’ve just seen it over and over again. So, if you’ve really gotta shut it down, shut it down and put it away and go enjoy the rest of your life.”

Legendary Drummer Nick Barker: “I’m Dealing With Stage Five Chronic Kidney Failure Right Now”
Drummer Nick Barker, who is known for his work with Brujeria, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Lock Up, etc., has shared another health update amid his battle with chronic kidney failure. According to him, his condition is at stage 5.
Barker told the Pod Scum podcast the following:
“Well, at this point in my career, as you probably know, I’m experiencing renal failure right now. So I’m on dialysis three times a week for four hours at a time. And that’s pretty much consumed my life. I’ve gone from one extreme to the other, whereas before the renal failure, I was [on tour] in a different place every week. Today I could be in New York; next week I could be in Sydney, and then the week after that, I’m in Amsterdam, I’m in London. Because of what I’m going through personally, it’s made me appreciate it more now it’s gone. Now I don’t have it, I really do appreciate it. And I realize how much I took it for granted.”
He continued:
“Well, I’m dealing with stage five chronic kidney failure right now, which is full renal failure. I’ve been on dialysis, hemodialysis since January ’23. I’ve been approved by the transplant list here in Vancouver. I did all the pre-assessments, passed all the assessment tests. They said, ‘Yep, you’re totally fine. You’ve just gotta drop some of those lbs. So I’ve got about 20, 30 pounds to lose before they can operate on me.”
He went on to say the operation will involve “a new kidney”:
“They don’t give you two [kidneys] now. What they do is they make an incision and they basically implant the live kidney on one of your dead kidneys.”
He also offered timeline on the surgery:
“I’m on a waiting list. I could get a phone call after I speak to you, or it could be next year. It’s really just a waiting game. To not sound so crass, I’ve just gotta wait for somebody to die.”
He later confirmed he is still involved in music:
“Yeah, I am. I still play the drums, but not very often. See with me, I need somebody to jam with to be inspired. I can play do playthroughs all day, but they’re not really challenging. But if I’m there with a guitarist and he’s throwing riffs at me, I get really creative that way. But playing on my own, I’ll be honest with you, I get bored after 20 minutes.”

A new Rob Zombie art exhibition called “What Lurks On Channel X?” will be opening at the Morrison Gallery in Kent, CT later this month. Fans will be able to check out the display from October 25 through November 16.

Gene Simmons “Recovering At Home” Following Car Crash
According to NBC4 Los Angeles, Gene Simmons (KISS) was recently hospitalized following a car crash. The incident occurred on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, CA after the musician passed out behind the wheel. His SUV went across several lanes of traffic before hitting a parked car. The 76-year-old is now “recovering at home.” Simmons said the following about the accident via X/Twitter:
“Thanks, everybody, for the kind wishes. I’m completely fine. I had a slight fender bender. It happens. Especially to those of us were horrible drivers. And that’s me. All is well.”
