KEN mode & Kowloon Walled City Cover Shallow North Dakota For Benefit Split Release

KEN mode and Kowloon Walled City have joined forces for a new split release to raise money for Shallow North Dakota‘s Tony Jacome, who is battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer. You can purchase the EP on Bandcamp and donate to Jacome via GoFundMe. The effort features an unreleased Shallow North Dakota song titled “Bearded Burly Man,” KEN mode’s covers of “Outside Dakota” and “Six Foot Foam Lover,“ and Kowloon Walled City‘s cover of “The Milkman.”

KEN mode commented:

“Two new KEN mode tracks.

So, we made a post a few weeks ago on FB and IG about our friend Tony, who plays in one of the heaviest bands of all time – Shallow North Dakota. He’s fighting stage 4 pancreatic cancer, and some people are trying to help raise funds for his fight and his family.

The music community started stepping up, and over the course of the week, we found out that Shallow North Dakota had a song from their final album, Mob Wheel, that never got released, and that they were planning to release this with our pals Kowloon Walled City as a special limited fundraising release LP.

KWC had done a SDN cover back in 2011 that also never got released. So we decided to muscle our way onto this, despite not having any material. We jammed on two SND songs on Jan 13, put down some drums, and ran with it. Jesse spent a bunch of time mixing it, Scott Evans and Sean Pearson (who engineered the other two tracks) helped provide feedback along the way, then Carl Saff was kind enough to rush out a killer mastering job on the whole batch, while our bud Sean Arsenian whipped up some art.

This whole record is one big fundraiser. We’re releasing it on bandcamp to start, with LP pre-orders and digital, and it’ll be available on various other streaming services next week. Think of it as the sickest, heaviest gofundme you’ve ever seen. The cause is heartbreaking and sucks, but we were stoked to be able to mobilize and try to do something under the circumstances.”

KEN mode Announce Two 20th Anniversary Shows

KEN mode have announced a couple of 20th anniversary shows. Here’s the dates:

09/08 Toronto, ON – The Grand Gerrard (with Hammerhands, Pale Mare & IRN)
10/04 Winnipeg, MB – The Good Will Social Club (with The Great Sabatini & Adolyne)

Jesse Matthewson commented:

“Sometimes it’s hard to fathom that we’ve been at this for 20 years as of September 2019. The band started when I was only 17, just starting university. Shane was 15 and entering the 11th grade. You start these things because something inside you is messed up and simply needs to get this creative energy out in a harsh and satisfying way, and you don’t really think that you’re laying the foundation for your most cherished friendships and business relationships of your entire adult life.

Seven full lengths, one EP, one split 7″, several comps and tribute records deep, and hopefully we’re still only scratching the surface of what we’ll do with this mess of noise. We wanted to kickstart our 20th year as a band with a couple of special shows in Toronto and Winnipeg, two cities very near and dear to us. Well, maybe Toronto isn’t so near, but you get the sentiment. We’ll be inserting some deep cuts into our setlists, and bringing up a bunch of special guests in Winnipeg, from the group of talented musicians we’ve had the pleasure of making music with over the years.”

KEN mode Premiere “Learning To Be Too Cold” Video

KEN mode have premiered a new video for their song “Learning To Be Too Cold.” This track is from the band’s latest album “Loved.” Jesse Matthewson commented:

“‘Learning To Be Too Cold‘ was the last song written in the session for this record. We salvaged a few riffs from a track that we demoed in May of 2017 with the working title of ‘the moody idiot’, and added three new parts that we wrote just after Skot found out that his father died. The riffs are like scraping bones and metal together, and the lyrics are some of the most demeaning and harsh of the entire album. Skot claims the song does not make him feel good by association, and is consequently his favourite song on the record.”

KEN mode Premiere New Song “Not Soulmates”, Announce North American & European Tours

KEN mode have premiered a new song titled “Not Soulmates,” via Consequence Of Sound. This track is from the band’s new album “Loved,” which will be released on August 31.

Jesse Matthewson commented:

“The main ‘chorus’ line, I suppose you could call it, ‘You’re going to continue enjoying this mistake with me’, was conceived by Scott’s wife. This song is about the many complexities of love and the humour that surrounds its entirety – whether people choose to process it or not. It’s got riffs you can throw round-house kicks to and is an ode to the Melvins and Zeni Geva.”

KEN mode Premiere “Feathers & Lips” Video

KEN mode have premiered a new video for their new song “Feathers & Lips.” This track is from the band’s new album “Loved,” which will be released on August 31.

Jesse Matthewson commented:

“I’ve never understood why so many of the most aggressive and extreme/cruel political figures are also the least likely candidates to win in an actual fight. This isn’t exclusive to either side of the spectrum. There’s a hole in these people that is being filled with being a dick to and/or trying to control other humans with some of the most irrational bullshit. And their voices are always the ones being heard, because they tend to be yelling the loudest…”

In other news, the group have also announced three Canadian dates:

09/28 Winnipeg, MB – The Good Will Social Club
09/29 Saskatoon, SK – The Black Cat Tavern
09/30 Calgary, AB – Palomino
