  • Mudvayne’s Matt McDonough On Nü-Metal Resurgence: “It’s Almost Like We’re The Classic Rock Now”

During a recent appearance on the “Talk Toomey” podcast, Mudvayne’s Matt McDonough shared his thoughts on the nü-metal resurgence. The drummer says “it’s almost like [they’re] the classic rock now.”

McDonough said the following when asked if the band were worried about releasing new music:

“Yeah, it’s like that always when you’re releasing new material. You can’t help but be concerned about the reception and how it’s gonna be perceived. You don’t wanna repeat yourself. You wanna push the envelope, at least the way we are. We enjoy exploring new space and trying new stuff, whatever, and sometimes that can backfire on you. And after the band was separated for quite a long time, coming back, we’re different people, we’re older. So all of those things add up to a different sound. You’re curious how it’s gonna be received. So far it’s been overwhelming and it’s really flattering. I mean, I’m still grateful for all of the attention we get.”

He went to discuss the nü-metal resurgence:

“The strange renaissance of that time period, it’s almost like we’re the classic rock now. Back in 2019, 2020, when we first started talking about a reunion, I was, like, ‘No one’s even gonna remember us. Who’s actually gonna come out?’ And the response for those first festivals, the Danny Wimmer[-produced events], the DWP festivals, was just a absolutely surreal and overwhelming. And now it’s, like — I don’t think it’s an exaggeration — we see four generations of people. People in their early sixties, late fifties that were late ’90s fans, and then their grandkids. There was an 8-year-old right in front last night in San Antonio.

So, yeah, again, it’s just — I don’t know — timing, luck, what. But it seems to be happening for everybody. Obviously, DEFTONES have blown up. It’s crazy — they’re bigger than they’ve ever been. So I don’t know. Maybe the world just is ready to come to a nu metal show, I guess.”

  • Edge Of Paradise Share Music Video For Cover Of Clint Mansell’s “Requiem For A Dream” Theme

Edge Of Paradise have released a cover of Clint Mansell’s “Requiem For A Dream” theme. You can find a music video for their take on the track below:

    Singer Margarita Monet commented:

“This theme has always resonated deep within and inspired me to see how a simple melody can open entire worlds. With our version we wanted to amplify that emotion, the darkness, the light, and everything in between, and we’re excited to experience it with you through our dimension, on the stages and beyond.”

    A press release continued:

“The artwork created by Margarita was unveiled at the NoHo CineFest in Hollywood, where she received the Outstanding Artist Award for her visual work and storytelling. Her graphic novel’s narrative extends Edge Of Paradise’s cinematic universe, seamlessly connecting the band’s music, imagery, and philosophy through art. Additionally, the band’s song ‘The Unknown’ will be featured in the upcoming feature film The Complete Course of Howard French, directed by Gustavo Sampaio, expanding their presence across both the music and film landscapes”

  • Hatebreed’s Wayne Lozinak On His Brain Surgery Recovery: “The Brain Had To Relearn After The Disruption”

As previously reported, Hatebreed guitarist Wayne Lozinak recently underwent surgery to remove a benign brain tumor. Now, the musician has opened up about his recovery, saying his “brain had to relearn after the disruption.”

Lozinak told The Mike James Rock Show the following:

“ I had symptoms at [the U.K.’s] Download festival [in June]. I went to the doctor in France the next day. It was weird — my lip got numb, and I was, like, ‘That’s kind of weird.’ But then I couldn’t talk. It was almost like I was having a stroke. So then we had a day off in France the next day. I was fine the next day, but I was, like, ‘Let me go see the doctor.’ My girlfriend actually told me… I was, like, ‘I’m fine.’ She’s, like, ‘You’d better go or I’m gonna come out there.’ I was, like, ‘All right. All right. I’ll go. I’ll go.’ And then I got the scan and they saw a big tumor. I had to stay overnight. Then they did the MRI and then they finally said it was benign. [There was] no cancer, which was good, but it was big. And they said it’s probably been there for years, the doctor said. And they were, like, ‘It’s not an emergency, but get it done within the next three months.’ So I went back to the U.S., made an appointment with a surgeon. I got it taken out, and now I’m here [back on tour with HATEBREED].”

    He continued:

“I got the surgery August 4th… I couldn’t even talk when they first took [the tumor] out. ‘Cause it was in my speech center, so I actually had a mild stroke when they took it out. So I couldn’t talk, I couldn’t write. It was almost like I just forgot how to speak. So I needed speech therapist, all this stuff.”

He also added the following when asked if it was difficult to relearn playing his guitar:

“I was in the hospital for five days, something like that. So I was just in bed. When I got home, it was slow. When I first got home, I picked it up. That was one of the first things I did. I was, like, ‘All right, I know the chords.’ And then as time went on, then I was fine.

They said I should probably be doing normal things withing four to eight weeks. And then I was, like, ‘Well, can I go on tour?’ And they were asking me questions and doing tests. They were just, like, ‘Don’t headbang too crazy.’ That my one thing. I’m, like, ‘I’ll try not to.’ It’s hard, but, yeah, that was about it. But I’m pretty good now, so I’m happy. The brain had to relearn after the disruption.”
