YOB’s Mike Scheidt Recruited To Perform New 58-Minute Composition “The Complexity Of Distance”

Composer James Romig recently recruited YOB’s Mike Scheidt to play guitar on his new 58-minute composition “The Complexity Of Distance.” You can find a preview of that track below:

Scheidt commented:

“In 2018 I was lucky enough to meet a composer by the name of James Romig @jamesromigcomposer . He’s a classical composer and music professor at Western Illinois University. One of his recent compositions for solo piano, “Still”, was a Pulitzer finalist in 2019. Around that time, he asked me if I’d be interested in performing and recording a new piece that he’d compose for me for solo distorted guitar, somewhat in the vein of Sunn O))), but really it’s own thing. My answer was yes, of course.

After receiving the score, I spent the better part of 2021 taking lessons with my friend and fabulous guitarist Jake Pavlak @fernsoforegon , learning how to read Romig’s composition, how to count the beats, and how articulate the 20+ different chord voicings. In October I walked into Gung Ho Studio to work with Billy Barnett (who’s worked on 6 out of 8 of YOB’s albums) and together with James (remotely), Jake Pavlak, and Billy, we recorded “The Complexity Of Distance.” It turned out great!

It’s monolithic, clocking in at 58 minutes. Romig’s website is in my bio for a more detailed look at his work (he’s also on Instagram and Facebook). There is also a sample of the new piece on Youtube (which can be found in the link to James’s website). I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to work with James! We do not have a release date as of yet, but I’ll have more to share on that front this year. Maybe soon. Until then, cheers!”

YOB Digitally Release Deluxe Edition Of “Atma”, Announce Spring 2022 Tour

YOB have released a deluxe edition of their 2011 album “Atma.” The effort was remixed and remastered by Billy Barnett and it can be found in digital outlets now. It can also be pre-ordered on vinyl (out April 8).

Mike Scheidt commented:

“When we first recorded ‘Atma‘, our aim was to have a raw production, lo-fi and punk, and we did get that sound. Over the years, though, we wondered what it would be like to have Billy Barnett remix Atma, allowing him to give it Gung Ho Studio’s scope and thunder, as he has on ‘The Illusion Of Motion‘, “The Unreal Never Lived‘, ‘Clearing The Path To Ascend‘, and ‘Our Raw Heart‘.

Due to our busy schedules, this idea sat on the back burner but when the pandemic hit, we had the time to not only approach the project, but approach it with this goal: to keep everything in Jeff Olsen’s amazing raw-punch production while having Billy make it volume-wide and monolithic in detail and space. We’re thrilled with the result, and hope you will be too!”

YOB Cancel July Dates

YOB have cancelled their rescheduled July dates due to the coronavirus pandemic. Despite this, there is some good news as the band have also confirmed that new music is in the works.

YOB commented:

“Hello Friends,

We have been playing close attention to the worldwide conversation around touring and safety. It is clear that we must cancel our headlining shows for July. While this may not come as a surprise, it is a bummer. We feel for and are with everyone whose life and livelihood is turned upside down.

We have been and will continue to be taking this time to work on new music, and taking good care in general so that when we all rejoin each other for concerts and gatherings, we’ll be in top form and ready to celebrate with you. Until then, we’ll be working on ways to stay connected with everyone, and be a part of a positive mindset.

Take excellent care and stay safe. We’re sending our very best to you and yours.

Love, Mike, Aaron and Travis.

YOB Postpone March Shows, Announce Rescheduled Dates

YOB have postponed their March shows due to the coronavirus pandemic. Most of the dates will now take place in July.

YOB commented:

“It is with a heavy heart and concern for friends, family and everyone we get to work with, that we have decided to reschedule our upcoming March US shows for July except for Treefort Music Fest which has rescheduled for September 23 – 27, and Salt Lake City which we will reschedule for a September date we hope to announce soon. We are really disappointed. The growing health concerns, restrictions on events, and a want to keep everyone safe have been the deciding factors. We’re erring on the side of caution.

All tickets bought for March will be honored but unfortunately due to scheduling conflicts Human Impact will not be able to join us on the rescheduled shows. As of now our May European shows will proceed as planned. Everyone stay healthy & safe. 🙏💛🙏
