Russian Circles Are Talking About Releasing A New EP As “A Companion Piece To ‘Gnosis‘”

During a recent interview with New Noise Magazine, Mike Sullivan revealed that Russian Circles have some leftover material from the sessions for their latest album “Gnosis.” The guitarist went on to say that the music may end up surfacing on a new EP.

Sullivan said the following:

“It feels good to finally have [‘Gnosis‘] out because it was recorded so long ago. When we handed in the record, we realized—with the vinyl delays, you had to request X amount of records to be released on X date, and we requested a single LP, and when we turned in the record, we had enough material for two LPs, not even realizing that we had written that much, or that it was that much over the requirement for just a single LP.

So we are sitting on a number of songs that were meant to be on the record. It’s funny; it could be a totally different record if we were to swap out some of the songs. So there is talk of doing an additional EP tethered to—kind of a companion piece to ‘Gnosis‘. But I think we’ll touch up some of the songs and maybe include another one or two, and there’s some other ideas.

We don’t want to make another full-on release, like, ‘This is where we’re going; this is the direction,’ because that’s not the case at all. We’re just thinking about being careful of how to display the music. I think ultimately that will see the light of day hopefully in the next year or so. This isn’t locked in stone, but hopefully that EP will come out soon.”

Russian Circles Premiere “Gnosis” Music Video

Russian Circles have premiered a new video for the title track of their new album “Gnosis.” That effort will be released on August 19. The group commented:

“‘Gnosis‘ is a special song that has grown with us over a number of years. The main theme of the song was reconceptualized so many times that it provided nearly endless arrangement options. It’s rewarding to see such a minimal song idea evolve into one of our most dynamic and fully-realized songs to date. When discussing a concept for the video, we agreed we wanted cinematic footage of nature and humanity. Ultimately, we wanted the video to feel fresh and inspiring despite dealing with a dark theme. Similarly, we wanted to compel viewers to rewatch the video and get something new from each viewing. Somehow, editor Joe Kell masterfully made this all happen.”

Concert Review: System Of A Down, Korn, & Russian Circles In Oakland CA

Last night (October 18), I attended System Of A Down, Korn, and Russian Circles’ show at Oakland Arena in Oakland, CA and it was a fun night full of incredible music.

The show kicked off with a short set from Russian Circles. Despite losing a bunch of gear in a recent theft, the band still showed up and put on a solid performance that got everyone ready for the evening ahead.

Once Russian Circles finished up, Korn took the stage for a killer set. The band blasted onto the stage with an adjusted lineup featuring Aric Improta (Fever 333), who is filling in for drummer Ray Luzier as he battles COVID-19, and Roberto “Ra” Diaz (Suicidal Tendencies), who is filling in for bassist Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu as he takes time to deal with some “personal issues.” Despite the lineup change, the band sounded great. Frontman Jonathan Davis and guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer even appeared to be back to normal following their battles with COVID-19. Some highlights from their set included “Shoots And Ladders,” which included a partial cover of Metallica’s “One,” “Coming Undone,” “Y’All Want A Single,” “Freak On A Leash,” and “Blind.”

After Korn, it was time for the headliners of the evening, System Of A Down. The band put on the kind of chaotic, high-energy set that only they can. The show featured most of the songs from “Toxicity,” which is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary, mixed with tracks from the band’s other four albums. They also performed their two new songs, “Protect The Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz,” which recently received their live debuts in Las Vegas, NV. The group were firing on all cylinders and looked like they were having a good time onstage, which is always cool to see. The crowd were also going absolutely crazy as they sang, danced, and moshed the night away. Some highlights from the band’s set included “Chop Suey!,” “B.Y.O.B.,” “Soldier Side,” “Lonely Day,” “Protect The Land,” “Aerials,” “Toxicity,” and their epic closer “Sugar.”
