Concert Review: System Of A Down, Korn, & Russian Circles In Oakland CA

Last night (October 18), I attended System Of A Down, Korn, and Russian Circles’ show at Oakland Arena in Oakland, CA and it was a fun night full of incredible music.

The show kicked off with a short set from Russian Circles. Despite losing a bunch of gear in a recent theft, the band still showed up and put on a solid performance that got everyone ready for the evening ahead.

Once Russian Circles finished up, Korn took the stage for a killer set. The band blasted onto the stage with an adjusted lineup featuring Aric Improta (Fever 333), who is filling in for drummer Ray Luzier as he battles COVID-19, and Roberto “Ra” Diaz (Suicidal Tendencies), who is filling in for bassist Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu as he takes time to deal with some “personal issues.” Despite the lineup change, the band sounded great. Frontman Jonathan Davis and guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer even appeared to be back to normal following their battles with COVID-19. Some highlights from their set included “Shoots And Ladders,” which included a partial cover of Metallica’s “One,” “Coming Undone,” “Y’All Want A Single,” “Freak On A Leash,” and “Blind.”

After Korn, it was time for the headliners of the evening, System Of A Down. The band put on the kind of chaotic, high-energy set that only they can. The show featured most of the songs from “Toxicity,” which is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary, mixed with tracks from the band’s other four albums. They also performed their two new songs, “Protect The Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz,” which recently received their live debuts in Las Vegas, NV. The group were firing on all cylinders and looked like they were having a good time onstage, which is always cool to see. The crowd were also going absolutely crazy as they sang, danced, and moshed the night away. Some highlights from the band’s set included “Chop Suey!,” “B.Y.O.B.,” “Soldier Side,” “Lonely Day,” “Protect The Land,” “Aerials,” “Toxicity,” and their epic closer “Sugar.”

Russian Circles Postpone European/UK Tour With Torche Due To Coronavirus

Russian Circles have postponed their European/UK tour with Torche due to the coronavirus pandemic. The dates are expected to be rescheduled for later this year.

Russian Circles commented:

“It’s with heavy hearts that we’re announcing the postponement of our European tour with Torche due to the increasing government pressure to limit public events in the wake of the coronavirus. We’ve been watching the day-by-day developments closely and all the patterns seem to indicate that the measures imposed by countries like Italy will likely be the model for most of Western Europe in the next few weeks, effectively cancelling the majority of our shows.

We have already had several concerts cancelled on us and we’ve been asked to postpone our performances by several additional promoters. Ultimately, we anticipate that the situation will get worse before it gets any better. Beyond government restrictions, we also have to consider the health of our audiences and the people working our shows.

We’ve played shows with broken fingers. We’ve played shows with vomit buckets hidden behind our amps because members of the band we’re dealing with stomach flus. We’ve played shows days after members have come out of surgery. We’ve played through any number of physical, emotional, or financial hardships, but unfortunately we have to make an exception this time around.

It pains us to postpone the tour, but for the sake of our audience, our colleagues in the clubs, and ourselves, we feel it’s best to reschedule the tour for later in 2020. That said, we are keeping our fingers crossed that the situation improves in time for Roadburn Festival in mid-April as we are still planning on performing as scheduled.

We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused anyone but we will be back soon. Stay safe and take care of each other. ” – Brian, Mike & Dave

We plan to reschedule this full tour ASAP, currently looking at Fall / Late 2020 , will advise on exact dates / period as soon as it is clear.”
