Bloodbath, Grave, Primordial, Broken Hope, Etc. Set For 2024 Maryland Deathfest

The initial lineup has been revealed for next year’s Maryland Deathfest. The event will be held in Baltimore, MD on May 23-26 and it will feature: 1349, AHAB, Apartment 213, Archgoat, Aura Noir, Avulsed, Bloodbath, Blue Holocaust, Brodequin, Broken Hope, Carpathian Forest, Cenotaph, Coffins, Deathhammer, Defleshed, Depulsed, Extortion, Fossilization, Grave, Impure, Inhume, Internal Suffering, Kurnugia, Mortuary Drape, Necessary Death, Primordial, Ripper, ROT, Sacrifice, Severe Torture, Skinless, Stabbing, Tankard, Vomitory, Vomi Noir, Yacøpsæ, and Yellow Eyes.

Organizers commented:

“The majority of the foreign bands confirmed thus far will be making an exclusive US appearance at MDF 2024. There are a few foreign bands that will also play several additional MDF-affiliated shows in the week following MDF, so be on the lookout for more info about that in the coming months.

A limited amount of discounted early bird (4-day) passes go on sale this Friday, January 27th at 11 AM EST. Save the link below and be prepared to snag one of those.

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/maryland-deathfest-xix-tickets-520348395057

The early bird passes will likely sell out the same day they are released, but don’t stress if you don’t get one, as more 4-day passes will be released later, although at a slightly higher price.

Regarding venues/stages being utilized for MDF 2024, we are planning to use Rams Head, Power Plant, Soundstage, and potentially a stage outside at Market Place (near Soundstage). We will be able to follow up about the Market Place stage in the early summer, but as it stands now, we are planning on this 4 stage arrangement, all of which are contained to one general area and will reduce the amount of walking for you. This indoor/outdoor arrangement all in the same general area could be somewhat reminiscent of when the festival was at Sonar, for those who remember that.

There will be plenty of space for merch vendors around the fountain area at Power Plant and nearby sidewalks, right between the stages being used.

We still have at least 40 more bands to announce, and the next round of 10 or so confirmed bands will be announced during the month of February. We are holding off until late spring/early summer to potentially announce a few of those bands, as there are still some obstacles in the way for them to enter the US.

We hope to see you again next year for the return of Maryland Deathfest on May 23-26, 2024!

Maryland Deathfest To Return In 2024

Following some uncertainty, it has now been confirmed that Maryland Deathfest will be returning on May 23-26, 2024. Organizers issued the following statement:

“Maryland Deathfest will return in 2024 for its 19th edition on May 23-26, 2024. We won’t be determining the venue format, booking/announcing bands, or going on sale with tickets for MDF XIX until sometime in the first half of 2023, but for now, go ahead and pencil in the dates. Moving forward, Maryland Deathfest will be the one and only festival we produce. The upcoming UK Deathfest in London next month will be the last of our events outside of Maryland.”

GoFundMe Campaign Launched For Man Who Took His Own Life At Maryland Deathfest

A 24-year-old metal fan named Axel James Markle has sadly passed away after jumping off a parking structure at this year’s Maryland Deathfest in Baltimore, MD. Prior to the incident, the man shared his intentions to take his own life on social media. You can help out his family by donating at gofundme.com. Festival organizers commented:

“As many of you know, a tragedy occurred just outside one of the venues on Friday, 5/27. Like many others, this has been very difficult for us to process, and we don’t think we’ll ever fully process it. Our thoughts and condolences are with those that knew Axel and/or those that have been traumatized by this. If you need help, please do not hesitate to reach out to friends or family to talk it out. You are never alone. National Suicide Prevention Hotline – 800-273-8255”

Watch Exhorder Perform With Ex-Cannibal Corpse Guitarist Pat O’Brien At Maryland Deathfest

Exhorder were joined onstage by Pat O’Brien (ex-Cannibal Corpse) during their set at this year’s Maryland Deathfest. The guitarist was filling in for Marzi Montazeri, who exited the band earlier this year. The show marked O’Brien’s return to the stage after he was arrested in 2018 for burglary with assault and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer as his Northdale, FL home was burning.

Bloodbath & Dismember Drop Off 2022 Maryland Deathfest, Autopsy & Demolition Hammer Added

Bloodbath and Dismember have dropped off the 2022 Maryland Deathfest. Autopsy and Demolition Hammer will be taking their places. As previously reported, the festival will be held in Baltimore, MD on May 26-29.

Festival organizers said the following about this latest development:

“It sickens us beyond belief to have to post this, but both Dismember and Bloodbath are no longer playing MDF.

…As you can see, in both instances, this is entirely out of our control. We understand how disappointing this news will be for many of you and we can certainly relate, as this is the absolute last thing we wanted to have to post in the 11th hour before the fest finally transpires.

Despite the short notice, AUTOPSY are now playing on Saturday at Edison Lot, and DEMOLITION HAMMER are now playing on Friday at Edison Lot.

We understand that emotions will probably be running high over this news, but we personally don’t have time to dwell on it, as we, along with all of our staff, are working tirelessly to welcome the 91 bands that are still scheduled to play at MDF in just 2 weeks, so we can’t lose sight of that.

Quite a few foreign bands that are due to play MDF are already in the US, and we know that all of the other foreign bands meet the requirement to enter the US and aren’t dealing with visa issues. While there’s always a possibility for something unexpected to occur, we feel like this is the worst of the news that we’ll need to drop on you…”

Dismember also commented:

“Due to the Covid-19 restrictions still active for entering the U.S., we are forced to cancel our appearance at Maryland Deathfest this year. We held our hope that the U.S. would follow other countries example and end the mandatory vaccination demand. With less than a month to go “that” has not happened and therefore we see no other choice than to cancel.”

Bloodbath previously issued a statement regarding this cancellation and the postponement of their North American tour as well:

“First of all, this is an announcement we hoped we would never have to make… But now left in anger and frustration, we are unfortunately forced to postpone our North American tour and our appearance at Maryland Deathfest, yet again.

Despite applying for our visas over seven months ago (a process that should take three), they have still not been processed in time due to reasons beyond our control. We’ve done absolutely everything we can to try and salvage this bullshit and make this tour finally become reality, but we have to accept our fate at this point, that it will simply not happen.

Given that this is the third time this tour has had to be postponed, we both feel and share your disappointment, but we assure you that despite the hardships associated with this tour, we have not given up and consequently will reschedule the dates as soon as we’re able to rid the bureaucracy and lift this curse of delusion.

Until then, stay safe and stay strong and we hope to see you all sooner than later.

Refunds for all the club shows will be available from your point of purchase.”

Maryland Deathfest To Go On Hiatus After 2022

The Maryland Deathfest will soon be going on an indefinite hiatus. Unfortunately, organizers say this year’s event, which is scheduled for May 26-29 in Baltimore, MD, “could be the last edition of MDF.”

The following statement was issued:

“While we continue to work diligently on the long-awaited 18th edition of MDF that will finally take place next month, we’d like to share some thoughts with you about the future of MDF.

We’re sorry to inform you that we will not be organizing any festivals at all in 2023, including Maryland Deathfest. There’s a chance that 2022 could be the last edition of MDF, but we’re unable to determine that right now one way or another. What we can say now is that we’re going on hiatus and we’ll decide during this much needed break if the festival will return in 2024. There are many variables at play that will impact the decision to possibly bring it back in 2024, including the state of world and if we have the ability to put other things in our personal lives on hold to give the event the kind of attention it has always needed and received.

When we set out to plan the first edition of MDF 20 years ago, we could have never imagined that we’d still be doing it all of these years later. We have committed so much time and energy into making MDF what it is, never once taking a break. Considering the grassroots nature of the event, it feels like a miracle that we’ve made it this far. On top of the typical stresses and challenges over the years, these last 2 years in particular have added so many additional elements of surprise and uncertainty that have added to the exhaustion of it all and led us to this decision of going on hiatus. Simply put, our minds and bodies need a break, and we hope that everyone can understand and respect this decision.

We understand how much this event means to so many of you and realize that this news can be pretty disappointing, but at the same time, we hope that we’ve provided you with countless positive memories and a chance to develop new friendships while attending MDF over the years. We appreciate every single person that has ever supported and attended the event, as without you, there’s no way we would have made it this far. We’re just a couple of guys that got into extreme music 25+ years ago in middle/high school that wanted to support the music we love, never imagining that MDF would turn into a cultural institution that has seen over 700 bands from nearly 40 countries hit the stage.

Based on this news, you should definitely soak in your experience at MDF this year more than you were already planning on. If you were on the fence about going, perhaps now is the time to fall on the side of attending, as the future is uncertain.

We look forward to finally meeting you all again next month and will be following up soon with more information about this year’s event.
