Four Members Exit Delain, Martijn Westerholt To Continue Band As A Solo Project

Vocalist Charlotte Wessels, bassist Otto Schimmelpenninck van der Oije, guitarist Timo Somers, and drummer Joey de Boer have all exited Delain. The band will now continue as keyboardist Martijn Westerholt’s solo project.

Westerholt said the following:

“For the last year or so, the collaboration within the band ceased to work as well as it once had. Some of us were no longer happy with the current roles in the band. We all tried very hard to find a solution for over a year, but sadly we were unable to find one. As a result, we will all be going our own ways and pursuing our own endeavors.

I am very sad our cooperation has come to end, but at the same time I am very grateful for all the years we were able to work together. Together we toured the world, shared highs and lows, and met with many successes as well as times that pushed us to learn and grow. We all enjoyed meeting our fans and making new friends all over the globe. I would like to thank my fellow bandmates and wish Timo, Otto, Joey, and especially Charlotte the very best for the future. And I hope that will mean onwards and upwards to new musical adventures for each of them!

That being said, Delain will live on. The others have chosen to pursue different paths. I have decided to keep Delain alive by continuing on with writing and producing the music for Delain as I always have. I started Delain as a project in 2002 and for the next album I will take it back to a project form, releasing music with special guests. As it looks now many familiar faces will be returning to join me on this journey.

I can’t express my gratitude enough to all of you Delainers that have supported us over so many years. Your dedication to the music and the community you created for us has been overwhelming. Even though this situation is not ideal, change never usually is at first, I hope you will continue to join Delain on its new journey. This is not the end of Delain. It’s the end of a chapter, but also the beginning of a new one.”

Wessels also issued a statement:

“Delain has been my world for nearing 16 years, which is half of my life and my entire career. So it is with a heavy heart that I am confirming that Delain will continue as Martijn’s solo project, and my involvement with Delain ends here.

At this time, I know that you might have questions about the ‘why’ in all of this. I fully understand and respect that. Simply put, it is the sad conclusion of more than a year of trying to find solutions to built up grievances. Part of me feels like I’m letting all of you down, I’d like you to know that this decision was not taken lightly and I apologise to those of you who had high hopes of seeing all of us together live on stage again after lockdown. Until recently, I thought this might still be in the cards for us as well.

In the last 15 years we have released music that we have poured our heart and soul into. We have toured the world, rocked so many stages and met so many wonderful fans; I cherish all of that beyond measure. Every eye locked during a lyric, every front row high five, every after show hug (remember hugs?) From the sweaty hole in the wall to the Wembleys, Wackens, and Paradisos of our career. The memories we — band, crew, fans — have made together, will last forever. And in the end, they are more important to me than the differences that we couldn’t overcome, so that’s where I’d like the focus of the narrative to be.

So where do we go from here? Otto, Timo and Joey are also leaving Delain, but will carry on making music with their own projects. Make sure you’re following what they’re up to. I can’t wait to see and hear how they will take the world by storm. Martijn will continue with Delain, and although it may be painful at first to see a Delain that I’m not a part of, I do wish him the very best in this new chapter. Like any relationship, our creative partnership has required work at times, but it has also been incredibly fruitful and I am grateful for all the things that we made together. Finally, I hope that Delain remains a positive force in everyone’s lives. We Are The Others, always will be, and none of this changes that.

As for myself, I’ll keep writing and performing music. It is the thing that gives me joy and purpose.

I’m beyond grateful for my amazing community on Patreon, something that was supposed to be a side project from Delain, but will now be the primary place that I release music and create art and community. This platform allows me to keep creating independently and I am thankful for all patrons that make this possible. I am dedicated to bring you my absolute best, and look forward to making magic with all of you.

I welcome the future with open arms, and I hope to see you on my journey.”

Delain Premiere “Ghost House Heart” Music Video

Delain have premiered a new video for their new song “Ghost House Heart.” This track is from the band’s new album “Apocalypse & Chill,” which will be released on February 7.

Vocalist Charlotte Wessels commented:

“Going back to such an intimate song after the bombast of ‘Masters Of Destiny’ and ‘Burning Bridges’ feels a bit like switching gears, but I enjoy every minute of it. Singing this song is almost meditative, and I love the way voice, piano and violin weave together in the track. I hope our fans will love this change of pace as well, and I can’t wait to perform this song live on stage during our upcoming U.K. tour and our Valentine’s Day release show in Utrecht.”

Keyboardist Martijn Westerholt added:

“This song was created while spontaneously playing and singing together with Charlotte. It seemed to create itself. It’s also a nice change of pace in relation to the other songs we have written for the new album. As a pianist, of course it is fun to play a piano song for a change. We worked with violinist Shir-Ran Yinon and I think the way the violin intertwines with the vocal lines is mesmerizing. The video was a lot fun to make and it was a beautiful set with a lot of history.”

“We’re happy to present our new single ‘One Second’, an eclectic anthem about falling for that long lost love over and over again. Contrasting our previous orchestral singles, ‘One Second’ showcases the other side of our upcoming album; this song features snappy riffs and a chorus we can’t wait to hear you sing along with, courtesy of Timo Somers. With its energy and bombast, the track marries some of our favorite musical elements, and introduces a real-life choir as a new color on our palate. Delain Perform New Song “Burning Bridges” Live

During their September 19 show in Philadelphia, PA, Delain performed their new song “Burning Bridges” live for the first time. You can see fan-filmed footage of that below. An official video for “Burning Bridges” is expected to be released on September 27.

Delain Drummer Joey De Boer To Miss Upcoming Shows

Delain drummer Joey De Boer will be missing the initial dates of the band’s tour with Amorphis and Anneke Van Giersbergen due to visa issues. During his absence, Amorphis drummer Jan Rechberger will be filling in.

The band commented:

“Dear Delainers,

Due to circumstances unforeseen and beyond our control, there has been a delay in our drummer Joey’s US visa.

We have been assured that the visa will be approved, but it may take as much as a couple of weeks to get processed.

Therefore we have to inform you that sadly, Joey will not make it to the US in time to perform at least the first run of the tour with us.

Although we are deeply disappointed by the situation, we fortunately have a solution to rock out with all of you US Delainers as planned.

We are very grateful that Amorphis’ drummer Jan Rechberger has offered to perform double duty this tour and take his place behind the drums with Delain as well. Many thanks to him!

Please keep your fingers crossed for Joey and we look forward to starting our US tour in a few days!

See you soon!”

Guitarist Merel Bechtold Exits Delain

Merel Bechtold has announced her departure from Delain. The guitarist’s final performance with the band will take place on June 23 at the Graspop Metal Meeting in Dessel, Belgium,

The band commented:

“Dear Delainers,

Today we are sharing the news with you that Merel has decided to leave Delain and focus on different musical ambitions. Merel’s performance with us at Graspop will be her last show as a permanent band member of Delain. We are aware this is very short notice, and this we regret for those of you who wanted to catch a last show with her as a part of the team. However, this is a friendly departure, and we are respecting Merel’s wishes in doing so. We had an amazing ride sharing the stage with this fireball and we are excited to see the results of her new
endeavours.”

Bechtold added:

“Dear all, I am sorry to inform you that on Graspop I will play my last show with Delain. After almost five amazing years the time has come for me to focus on my own dreams. Because of my previous band commitments my attention diverged from my own music and the path I want to follow, and I feel I need to give myself the time and opportunity to explore my musical ambitions. This is probably the hardest decision of my life, but in the end it’s important to follow your heart and be happy. I want to thank my bandmates and crew, I will miss you dearly! Also huge thanks to all the amazing people I’ve met on the road. And most importantly I want to thank YOU for all those amazing and warm memories! It’s been a pleasure.”

The group continued:

“Although we will miss Merel on the road with us, we realise that our busy schedules require loads of time and commitment, and we understand and respect her decision to focus on her own path. We will continue performing live as a five-piece as before, and look forward to finishing the work for our upcoming studio album, the upcoming festival season, our US tour with Amorphis and Anneke van Giersbergen and our European Masters Of Destiny Tour. We hope to see you all soon! Thank you Merel, we wish you nothing but the best!”

Delain Premiere “Masters Of Destiny” Video

Delain have premiered a new video for their new song “Masters Of Destiny.” This track is from their “Hunter’s Moon” release, which will be available on February 22. That effort will include four new tracks, ten live songs, and a Blu-ray that was shot at Utrecht Tivoli. That set featured Nightwish’s Marco Hietala and other guests.

The group commented:

“This is an exciting release for us, and a special one too on account of the fact that we chose one of our more elaborate and unconventional compositions for our first single, showcasing another side of ourselves as a band. We wanted to make the video like an extension to the music; to match the orchestral, instrumental and vocal bombast of the song with visuals of nature in all its grandeur, and we found the perfect backdrop for this in beautiful Iceland. We are very proud to present to you the music video for our brand new track ‘Masters Of Destiny’. We hope you enjoy the journey.”

Delain To Release “Hunter’s Moon” In February

Delain have announced that their “Hunter’s Moon” release will be available on February 22. The effort will include four new tracks, ten live songs, and a Blu-ray that was shot at Utrecht Tivoli. That set featured Nightwish’s Marco Hietala and other guests.

03. “This Silence Is Mine”
04. “Art Kills”
05. “Hands Of Gold” – Live (feat. George Oosthoek)
06. “Danse Macabre” – Live
07. “Scarlet” – Live
08. “Your Body Is A Battleground” – Live (feat. Marco Hietala)

12. “Not Enough” – Live
13. “Scandal” – Live (feat. Marco Hietala)
14. “The Gathering” – Live (feat. Marco Hietala)

The band said the following about the new songs:

“Along with the live Blu-ray are four new studio tracks. Two of these offer a preview of what we are working on for our new full-length studio album, which we expect to release in 2019. ‘Masters Of Destiny’ is a dramatic, cinematic track that we’re excited to shoot an equally dramatic video for this week. The title track, ‘Hunter’s Moon’, has more of a catchy feel and will hopefully appeal to our fans featuring heavy riffs, orchestrations, a large chorus and as a novel feature, Timo’s screams. Our guitarists stepped to the forefront on this release in writing ‘This Silence Is Mine’ (Timo Somers) and ‘Art Kills’ (Merel Bechtold). With fond live memories, classic and new sounds we’re excited to present ‘Hunter’s Moon’ to the world!”

They also added the following about the Blu-ray:

“The ‘Moonbathers’ tour has been a hell of a ride and the ‘Danse Macabre’ shows were an absolute highlight. We are excited to share the footage of our show at Tivoli Vredenburg with you on this brand new Blu-ray. It was great to finally perform all of our collaborations with Marco live, something our fans have been asking for for such a long time! Also gracing the stage were George Oosthoek, who gave his signature sound to ‘Hands Of Gold’, and Elianne Anemaat, who adorned ‘Scarlet’ with her beautiful cello tones. The Tivoli show had such an amazing atmosphere and was one of the highlights of our career. Plus a home match for some of us! We are thrilled to have this Blu-ray as a physical souvenir of the night and we hope that our fans will enjoy it as much as we did.”

Hietala commented as well:

“I was really pleased to do the tour, because it gave me a chance to challenge myself in different surroundings and band dynamics. In the end, it comes down to the same old but great thing. I love doing good shows with good people for good audiences. All for one and one for all!”
