Norma Jean Premiere “A Killing Word” Video

Norma Jean have premiered a new video for their new song “A Killing Word.” This track is from the band’s new album “Deathrattle Sing For Me,” which will officially be released tomorrow (August 12).

Vocalist Cory Brandan commented:

“Failure can lead to being done. Old school vibes. The ending of this song is a riff I wrote in 2009. Nothing about it is different from when it was written. I tried to use it on many songs since then but it never seemed to work. The main thing I found was that It was less about the riff and more about the double kick part under it. We felt like it was time to pull it out of the vault along with some other ideas. This song has a fairly basic song structure at its core and the bridge was left open until we hit the studio. We just let Jeremy go nuts. He added modular synths and other sounds. – There might be 20 different versions of various parts throughout this track and they’re all completely different songs dating back to 2008-09. So, to me this one is meant for fans of NJ, new and old. We weren’t trying to reinvent the wheel or anything. Just wanted to write a rad song.”

Norma Jean Premiere “Sleep Explosion” Video

Norma Jean have premiered a new video for their new song “Sleep Explosion.” This track will appear on the band’s new album “Deathrattle Sing For Me,” which is set to be released on August 12.

Vocalist Cory Brandan commented:

“Destruction is a variant of completion. We were nearing the end of a tour in January 2022, after a series of house shows. It was a couple of months before we started writing ‘Deathrattle Sing For Me‘ when I first heard the demo for this song. [Guitarist] Grayson [Stewart] texted it to me.

I looked at my phone and saw the mock title ‘Valentine’s Day Ass Beater.’ Immediately, I put on headphones and listened. Why hadn’t I heard this yet? It just got me so excited to start writing.

We were staying with a friend that night and I opted to sleep in the van so I could listen to this song over and over. I pretty much wrote all the vocals for it that night and not much of it changed.

I think sometimes we might think that we’ve spent so much time on something that we have to continue on the same path. Behind the music, I believe that changing your mind is freeing and we should be prepared and excited to do it anytime we want.

Changing my mind is one of my favorite super powers. 24 hours and a new beginning!”

Norma Jean Premiere New Song “Spearmint Revolt”

Norma Jean have premiered a new song titled “Spearmint Revolt.” This track is from the band’s new album “Deathrattle Sing For Me,” which will be released on August 12.

Vocalist Cory Brandan commented:

“There is no editing stage. Every edit is a new creation, and some songs write themselves. This song was thrown out, retrieved, reworked, and thrown out again a few times. After almost abandoning it completely, it wasn’t the song that needed to change — but our view of what kind of song it truly was.”

There is a lot of [guitarist] Grayson [Stewart] on this album, and I’ve never seen him more determined to make a statement than with what he writes than with this track. This song ended up coining a new common phrase in the Norma Jean camp: ‘It had to be off the album before it could be on it.’ Abandoning this song forced us to make it work in a much more desperate way.

The title and chorus lyrics are a tribute to the ’90s music we grew up with and how some bands would make some of their heaviest songs and name them something that forces you to view it differently. It seemed fitting for what this song went through, and it ended up naming the album: ‘Deathrattle Sing For Me‘.”

Guitarist Grayson Stewart added:

“I wanted this song to be an example of how much ground Norma Jean can cover within a single song — while still making it sound cohesive.”

Norma Jean Premiere “Call For The Blood” Music Video

Norma Jean have premiered a new video for their new song “Call For The Blood.” This track is from their new album “Deathrattle For Me,” which will be released on August 12.

Vocalist Cory Brandan Putman said the following:

“Accept that everything is a draft/ It helps to get it done. We banded together to make this record and to me, this song is the rallying cry. Composed by my brother, [co-producer] Matthew [Putman], this song was written around a single idea, altered heavily in post, and then mimicked by us.

The studio and post-production elements acted as an instrument. The experimentation and the process behind this track was a major point of inspiration for many other things we ended up doing throughout Death Rattle Sing For Me.

I feel like Matthew wrote this song with my voice in mind and I wanted to do something very unique over it. Dangerous rock ‘n’ roll! Blast it!”

Matthew added:

“‘CFTB’ was one of the first songs where I felt like we were establishing a personality for the album. Even though it was constructed in the studio from manipulated ideas we captured during a ‘riff vomiting’ session with Grayson [Stewart, guitars], it still has a very raw, live energy.

The samples were all chosen in a very deliberate way for how they colored the story behind the song (rebellious unity). There is nothing random about ‘CFTB’; every sound has meaning.

This is one of my all-time favorite vocal performance from Cory, where he proves once again why he’s one of the best of his generation.”

Cory also commented on the album:

“This record was really about banding together. It embodies the camaraderie of our brotherhood in Norma Jean. At the time, we needed something to do, and we wrote these songs for our own souls. The record was necessary to keep me alive in a very literal sense. It’s a deeper place.”
