Joe Satriani Announces June Art Showings

Joe Satriani will be hosting art showings at two Wentworth Gallery locations in Virginia and Maryland. The exhibits will feature a number of one-of-a-kind pieces including original canvases and hand painted guitars.

Here’s the dates:

06/11 McLean, VA – Wentworth Gallery at Tysons Galleria (at 3-6 p.m.)
06/12 Bethesda, MD – Wentworth Gallery at Montgomery Mall (at 1-3 p.m.)

Christian O’Mahony, principal at Wentworth Gallery, said the following:

“Joe is a master storyteller. Just as his music draws in the listener, his art draws in the viewer. His artwork is emotional, imaginative, and fantastic. Not only do you see the universe through Joe’s eyes, but you also contemplate our place in it.”

Satriani added:

“Music and art are my passions. I like making the invisible visible and the unimaginable real. The image on a canvas or an electric guitar for that matter can make you feel something unexpected and revealing, something that is the beginning of a greater personal insight. Challenging the straight line and the concepts of what belongs with what excites me. I want to experience new color combinations to make me see beyond the prevailing reality. There’s a balance between seriousness and humor that can imbue in a painting a kind of resilience and longevity, making it forever contemporary. When I paint and play my guitar, I strive to be in a state of exhilaration and communicate that feeling to my fans.”

Joe Satriani Confirms He’s “Been Talking With Alex Van Halen And David Lee Roth” About A Van Halen Tribute Tour

During a recent appearance on “Rock Of Nations With Dave Kinchen,” Joe Satriani confirmed that he was in talks about doing a Van Halen tribute tour with Alex Van Halen and David Lee Roth. This news comes after Jason Newsted (ex-Metallica) previously revealed that he was approached about taking part in the project.

Satriani said the following:

“I’ve been talking with Alex and Dave for about a year about doing something — a tour, something like that — that was gonna be a true tribute to Eddie [Van Halen] and the VAN HALEN legacy.

For me, it was a terrifying prospect of doing something like that, but I realized that it was something that would be a real labor of love for me. I was just so honored to take on the challenge.

It’s very complicated. And all I can really say about it is that if it does happen, I know we’ll make it the greatest thing ever for the fans and we’ll all celebrate together not only the great Eddie Van Halen but the legacy that that band created, the amazing amount of music and the goodwill and good vibes they created as a band.”

The guitarist went on to say that he was surprised Newsted broke the news about the project:

“These things are always happening in the music industry, and you’re supposed to keep very quiet about it [laughs], because sometimes they don’t work out. There’s usually about 10 crazy ideas that float around and musicians are always, like, ‘Okay, I won’t say anything about this ’cause it may not work out. I don’t wanna hurt this person’s feelings or disrupt any other business plans.’ So, yeah, we were all pretty shocked that Jason wanted to go public with it ’cause we were all sworn to silence. [Laughs]”

He also added:

“I have to say that just getting to know Alex has been really wonderful. He’s a great human being, and, obviously, I can’t imagine losing a brother that way, so soon. And they were really close; their relationship was really quite unique.

I don’t know Dave that well. I think I’ve only met him once — maybe when Steve [Vai] invited us to see the David Lee Roth tour. I was in Australia with Mick Jagger at the time, so we all went; it was quite an experience. But, yeah, I’ve only spoken to Dave on the phone a number of times over the last — I don’t know — 25 years or so. But he’s David Lee Roth; they’re VAN HALEN. It’s a big deal.

Like I said before, if it ever does happen, it will be a great honor and a terrifying challenge. Eddie, you can’t reproduce what he did — you can’t. You can learn the notes and you can be taught all the fingerings and get the gear and everything, but there was only one Eddie and he was the epitome of an original genius. But if it does happen, I know that Alex will make sure that it’s the right way to do it.”

Satriani also compared the project to Chickenfoot, which finds him joined by ex-Van Halen members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony:

“I looked at it from a musical point of view. I spent most of my life trying to memorize my own catalog — there are a lot of notes to memorize and to pull off a show and to stay focused on it. So every time something like this comes up, like CHICKENFOOT, it’s, like, ‘Okay, I’ve gotta make space in my brain for a whole other way of playing.’ The great thing is when you get together with the guys in CHICKENFOOT, their personalities are so huge and they bring so much talent that you don’t really have to be so big; you just be a part of something.

But the thought of representing all the eras of VAN HALEN, that’s pretty daunting; that’s a lot of stuff. And just from a guitar player’s point of view, Eddie progressed remarkably as a player and as an inventor, and those two things, they kind of went together from ‘Van Halen I’ all the way to the last album. And when you sit down to actually learn it and pull it off, you go, ‘Wow! Not only do I need talent but I need [to use specific] gear,’ ’cause certain things won’t work unless you’ve got this amp and it’s doing that. So that’s also another thing.”

Joe Satriani has launched pre-orders for the second issue in his comic book series “Crystal Planet.” That effort will be released in June.

The following was said in a press release [via Vents Magazine]:

“After the extremely successful launch of Joe Satriani’s debut comic book series, Crystal Planet in January, issue #2 is now set to release this June. Created by Joe Satriani and Ned Evett the series is released in conjunction with Incendium and Heavy Metal Magazine under the all-new music focused OPUS imprint. Issue #2 is available for pre-order now, with limited quantities of Issue #1 still available while supplies last, here. In a bold and brutal saga of sentient storms and Wingsuit armies, it’s music, and more importantly the power and emotion that music can conjure, which could bring an end to the conflict, restore harmony to the timestream, and reveal Walker’s true place in the universe. Issue #2 opens with a death in the family that raises even more questions for Satchel Walker as he takes his first perilous steps on the journey to Crystal Planet. Racing through the night in a banged-up station wagon with his father’s old guitar and lifelong friend Sarah Fortune at the wheel, their world is about to change forever, and the swarm is hot on their trail.”

Satriani added:

“Satchel Walker’s world is about to be turned upside-down in ways he could never have imagined. Issue #2 will bring his futuristic, battle-torn nightmares closer to reality and re-unite him with his father’s strange and powerful guitar.”

Joe Satriani To Release “Crystal Planet” Comic Book Series

Incendium and Heavy Metal magazine have announced a new comic book series titled “Crystal Planet.” The series was created by Joe Satriani and Ned Evett and it will be released through a new music-focused imprint called Opus.

Here’s a description of the series [via Blabbermouth]:

“A vivid space odyssey where Satchel Walker, a man out of time, finds himself caught between desperate factions as they battle for resources in the perilous orbit of a dying star. In a bold and brutal saga of sentient storms and Wingsuit armies, it’s music, and more importantly the power and emotion that music can conjure, which could bring an end to the conflict, restore harmony to the timestream, and reveal Walker’s true place in the universe.

“Crystal Planet” begins as a five-issue series. The first print edition of each issue will be released as a prestige format limited edition collectible comic book, featuring cardstock covers, specialty foil treatments, glossy pages, and individual numbering. Each first printing will be limited to 1998 copies at $19.98, and available to order here. The first issue is available to order now and ships March 2021.”

Satriani commented:

“Funny how things get their start. July 1994 I’m on tour with Deep Purple and I’m warming up with my guitar backstage in a bull’s isolation cell at the Plaza de Toros in Gjion, Spain. Then and there, I start writing the opening riff to a song that will become ‘Crystal Planet’, and a few years later, it’s the title track for my ’98 album release. Fast forward to 2013, friend and fellow guitarist Ned Evett makes an animated sci-fi video for my song ‘Lies And Truths’ using artwork from my ‘Joe’s Art 2013’ book. We projected that video on a 30-foot screen every night of the ‘Unstoppable Momentum’ tour. It was a hit with the fans which got us thinking we could expand the clip into a ‘Crystal Planet’ sci-fi epic. Ned and I formed Satchtoons, a company focused on creating animated content, and we got to work on scripts and demos for the ‘Crystal Planet’ pilot. Seven years later, thanks to Llexi Leon and Heavy Metal, here we are with our first comic book series! Llexi and I had worked together on his awesome ‘Eternal Descent’ comics, and by coincidence we met again when Heavy Metal published a short excerpt of ‘Crystal Planet’ adapted by Brendon Small for the magazine’s 2019 music issue. Both Ned and I love working with Llexi and the Incendium creative team; they bring so much artistry and expertise to our time-traveling adventure. I am thrilled to finally offer our fans the first full issue of what will ultimately be a three-novel trilogy.”

Llexi Leon added:

“‘Crystal Planet’ is a thrilling rollercoaster through space and time, it’s Mad Max vs. Tron — with guitars! This has been an incredibly rewarding project to bring to fruition, digging deep into the lore behind one of the greatest instrumental rock records. Working with Joe has always been a pleasure, having collaborated in comics with Eternal Descent years ago his love of the medium is well known. There was a treasure trove of concepts and character exploration compiled over decades by Joe and his writing partner Ned that formed the basis of this project, with the ultimate goal to take fans on a journey to ‘Crystal Planet’ for the first time. Tony, Richard, Carlos, and Jacob have done a tremendous job realizing an incredible world and telling it’s story. It’s fitting that our publishing venture with Heavy Metal would begin with a space faring time travel adventure!”

In additions to the comics, new “Crystal Planet” toys and collectibles will be available as well. A Joe Satriani “Crystal Planet” action figure can be pre-ordered HERE.
