Dave Mustaine Says He Once Asked Dimebag Darrell To Join Megadeth

During a recent interview with the Tampa Bay Times, Dave Mustaine revealed that he actually contacted Dimebag Darrell (Pantera) about joining Megadeth in the late 80’s. However, things didn’t end up working out because Mustaine had just hired drummer Nick Menza and the guitarist said he would only join if his brother Vinnie Paul (Pantera) could join too.

Here’s an exchange from the interview:

Were you and Dimebag Darrell into each other’s gear? Did you have different philosophies on the instruments you played?

“I did not. He may have, because he was a better guitar player than I am, and he was much more into that stuff. Being a bandleader/guitar player/rhythm player/lead player/blah blah blah, I don’t have the availability to spend as much time working on my solos as I’d like to. But I’m also very satiated with what I’ve done with my career.

“And with Darrell, when you look at his playing, he’s a monster. He’s one of those guys that in trios, with the bottom dropping out, he was really able to keep that going. Of course, on the studio releases, there was an additional track going, but live, that’s the real litmus test, right? And he was a spectacle to watch.

“I actually called him up and asked him to play in Megadeth. Fate would have completely changed if I would have called him before I called Nick Menza. I said, ‘Hey, Darrell, I’m looking for a guitar player.’ And he goes, ‘Can I bring my brother?’ And I went, ‘Who’s your brother?’ He goes, ‘Vinnie Paul! Don’t you know Vinnie Paul?’ He wanted to bring his brother and have him play with us, and I go, ‘Oh, man, I just hired Nick Menza.’ Can you imagine what Vinnie and Darrell would have been with me and Junior [David Ellefson]? Would’ve been pretty cool.”

New Trailer Posted For Nick Menza’s (Ex-Megadeth) Posthumous Autobiography “Megalife”

A new trailer has been posted for former Megadeth drummer Nick Menza’s posthumous autobiography “Megalife.” That effort will be released on December 11 via Post Hill Press.

Here’s a synopsis:

“With Nick Menza behind the kit, Megadeth transitioned from celebrated cult band to international superstars. Rust in Peace, the first album to feature Menza and Marty Friedman, was instantly considered a classic, sold over a million copies, got nominated for a Grammy Award, and established what many consider to be the definitive Megadeth lineup. It was the beginning of a remarkable run in which the band would release three career-defining albums and tour the world many times over.

Success was a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows: sobriety and addiction, peace and tension, laughter and anger. Until one day it all came crashing down. Despite his contributions to the band’s most iconic and enduring work, when Menza was forced to seek treatment for a debilitating tumor in his knee, he awoke from surgery to learn he was being fired from the band by the man he considered a brother and mentor, the ever-enigmatic Dave Mustaine. The devastating news sent him into a spiral of anger and frustration, followed by a dark period of self-medication that nearly killed him.

Megalife: The Autobiography of Nick Menza is an unflinching look at life inside of one of metal’s most successful bands, from the back of the stage to the bunks on the bus, as well as a blow-by-blow account of the tumultuous, complicated relationship between Menza and Mustaine. It is also the singular story of a self-taught musician who achieved his dreams through sheer will and determination, watched it all disintegrate, and then rebuilt himself from scratch.”

Nick Menza (Ex-Megadeth) Omitted From Grammys Televised In Memoriam Segment

The 59th Annual Grammy Award Show was not too kind to the metal community for several reasons, but it gets worse. In fact, Nick Menza (ex-Megadeth) was not featured on the televised In Memoriam segment. He did appear on the Grammys’ online list as well as the official program, but it still sucks they didn’t have him during the broadcast.
