Porcupine Tree’s Summer Shows May Be Their Last

It looks like Porcupine Tree may be getting ready to call it quits. According to Steven Wilson, the band’s summer 2023 shows will likely serve as their final dates.

Wilson said the following in a series of tweets:

“Happy new year to you all!

First and foremost a big thank you to everyone that enjoyed the @PorcupineTree ‘Closure / Continuation’ album / shows, and my book ‘Limited Edition of One’ during the past year.

Coming in 2023 will be my new album, a 10 track 65 minute musical journey that’s kinda hard to describe, but suffice to say it’s different again, not to mention totally pretentious (in a good way!)

It will be released by @VirginMusicUK, more news soon.

Meanwhile the (likely final) @PorcupineTree shows will be a handful of festival appearances over the Summer, check the band’s channels for more info.

Lots more exciting stuff (at least to me) happening, but for now I’ll leave you with my very best wishes for the year ahead, I hope it will be a wonderful one for you.

Porcupine Tree Premiere “Herd Culling” Music Video

Porcupine Tree have premiered a new video for their song “Herd Culling.” This track is from the band’s latest album “Closure / Continuation.” The group commented:

“For the forthcoming Porcupine Tree tour, a number of new films have been created which we hope many of you will get to experience on a big scale in the context of concert performance. As a preview, we have decided to release a ‘small screen’ version of Miles Skarin / Crystal Spotlight’s incredible new short film for ‘Herd Culling‘ in advance of the tour. We hope you enjoy!”

Porcupine Tree Premiere “Rats Return” Video

Porcupine Tree have premiered a new video for their new song “Rats Return.” This track is from the band’s new album “Closure / Continuation,” which will be released on June 24. Steven Wilson commented:

“‘Rats Return‘ is about those who claim to have the interests of the people at heart, but when it comes down to it there is only ego and self-interest. I find myself reflecting on what sort of person would actually be so driven as to want to rule over a whole nation, and aren’t these people by definition the very last people that should be allowed to do so? The rats will always save themselves first.”

Porcupine Tree Premiere New Song “Herd Culling”

Porcupine Tree have premiered a new song titled “Herd Culling.” This track is from the band’s new album “Closure / Continuation,” which will be released on June 24. The group said the following about the song:

“Lyrically, ‘Herd Culling‘ is about a very specific event in history, but it also deals with the broader theme of paranoia in the modern age – someone or something is coming up your driveway or in your front garden, and their/its motives are unclear.”

Porcupine Tree have confirmed the musicians that will be taking part in their upcoming live shows. They include: guitarist/vocalist Steven Wilson, keyboardist Richard Barbieri, drummer Gavin Harrison, guitarist Randy McStine, and bassist Nate Navarro.

Porcupine Tree Premiere New Song “Of The New Day”, Add More Dates To Upcoming Tour

Porcupine Tree have premiered a new song titled “Of The New Day.” This track is from the band’s new album “Closure / Continuation,” which will be released on June 24.

Steven Wilson commented:

“‘Of The New Day‘ is a song of rebirth, emerging from darkness. It sounds deceptively simple, a recognizably atypical Porcupine Tree ballad. That is until you realize that the length of the bars is constantly changing, flipping between bars of regular 4/4 time to 3/4, to 5/4 to 6/4, 11/4, so that the track never settles into any steady time.

It’s what Porcupine Tree can sometimes do really well, come up with a basic idea that’s almost intellectual or mathematical, but carry it off in a way that sounds completely natural and accessible. At least I hope there’s no sense of us being clever for the sake of it or putting technique over musicality. That is unless you want to specifically home in on that side of the composition.”

In other news, the group have also added more dates to their world tour. Here’s their updated schedule:

Porcupine Tree Premiere New Song “Harridan”

Porcupine Tree have premiered a new song titled “Harridan.” This track is from the band’s new album “Closure / Continuation,” which will be released on June 24.

The group commented:

“‘Harridan‘ and a few of the other new songs have been in play since shortly after the release of ‘The Incident‘. “They initially lived on a hard drive in a slowly growing computer file marked PT2012, later renamed PT2015, PT2018, and so on. There were times when we even forgot they were there, and times when they nagged us to finish them to see where they would take us.

Listening to the finished pieces, it was clear that this wasn’t like any of our work outside of the band — the combined DNA of the people behind the music meant these tracks were forming what was undeniably, unmistakably, obviously a Porcupine Tree record. You’ll hear all of that DNA flowing right through ‘Harridan’.”

In other news, the band have also announced a 2022 European/UK tour:

10/21 Berlin, GER – Max Schmelinghalle
