Former Overkill & Anvil Guitarist Sebastian Marino Passes Away

Former Overkill and Anvil guitarist Sebastian Marino has sadly passed away. He was 57 years old.

Marino’s friend Bruce Pilato issued the following statement:

“FAREWELL to my dear friend Sebastian Marino, who died suddenly in the early hours of today after being rushed to a hospital while doing a sound job on New Year’s Eve in Florida. Sebastian owned and operated AUDIO IMAGES one of the most acclaimed audio & video production companies in the country. He and I go back to the 1980s and in the mid 1990s we worked together with Linda Rutherford & Celtic Fire, which featured his first wife. It was Sebastian who I approached for a road crew when I first started working with Carl Palmer in 2005. Sebastian essentially brought a slew of top quality production people who made up the road crews of Carl Palmer’s band; ASIA; YES and other platinum level acts around the globe. A brilliant musician in his own right (he played guitar for OVERKILL and ANVIL among others)- he was like a best friend to any working musician or road tech’s who interacted with him. He always treated them fairly and often working for less than he should have just so the music could survive. Sebastian… you were a diamond whose legacy will shine on forever. RIP, pal.”

Overkill commented as well:

“It is with heavy hearts that we morn the passing of our good friend and great musician, Sebastian Marino.

Seb was an asset in the studio as well as on the stage for the three releases he did with us.

Most importantly, he was a great friend, who remained a great friend beyond the band.

The music world has lost one of the good ones.”

Anvil’s Steve “Lips” Kudlow also paid tribute to Marino:

“Condolences to my friend Sebastian Marino’s family and friends. Seby was a dear friend and I will miss him profoundly!! Worth the Weight was an extremely special Anvil album and it will keep Seby alive through our history forever! RIP SEBASTIAN MARINO”

ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL

Forming the band Anvil in 1982, the duo released one of the heaviest albums of all time — Metal on Metal — influencing some of the biggest names in rock including Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax. But while those bands went on to sell millions of albums and achieve international fame, Anvil’s career took a different path – straight to obscurity.

Until now…

Director Sacha Gervasi (Hitchcock) brings us Anvil! The Story of Anvil – a brilliant, achingly hilarious, and surprisingly touching documentary about Anvil’s last-ditch quest for fame and fortune. He joins the band members, now in the 50’s, as they perform all over the world, record a new album and struggle to make ends meet. Providing an intimate, insightful look into the band members’ ever-supportive, yet long-suffering families, Anvil! The Story of Anvil is also a tale of survival – and the passion and drive it takes to follow your dream, year after year after year.

AT FOURTEEN THEY MADE A PACT TO ROCK FOREVER. FIFTY YEARS LATER THEY STILL MEAN IT.

Watch Anvil Perform “Metal On Metal” With Current And Former Members Of Candlemass

During Anvil’s October 27 show in Stockholm, Sweden, the band were joined onstage by guitarist Mats “Mappe” Björkman (Candlemass) and singer Messiah Marcolin (ex-Candlemass) for a performance of “Metal On Metal.” You can see fan-filmed footage of that below. Marcolin told Blabbermouth the following:

“It’s the first time in 16 years me and my old friend Mats Mappe Björkman from CANDLEMASS [were] together on the same stage. We are both old ANVIL fans since being teenagers. Since we are friends with ANVIL they invited us up on stage and it was great fun!”

Remastered Version Of “Anvil! The Story Of Anvil” To Be Released This Fall

According to Deadline, Utopia will be releasing a remastered version of the 2009 Anvil documentary, “Anvil! The Story Of Anvil,” in theaters this fall. It will also receive a digital release later in the year.

The updated film “features remastered picture and sound, as well as a new exclusive epilogue interview with director Sacha Gervasi (My Dinner With Hervé, Hitchcock) and Anvil’s Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner moderated by former MTV host Matt Pinfield.”

A special screening will take place at the Saban Theater in Los Angeles, CA on September 22 as part of Beyond Fest. The event will include a performance from Anvil and appearances from a number of special guests. It will also feature a Q&A with Kudlow, Reiner, Gervasi, and Rebecca Yeldham. Steve-O (“Jackass”) will serve as the moderator.

Utopia CEO Robert Schwartzman commented:

“This film is pure magic. As well as being a brilliant filmmaker, Sacha was in the right place at the right time and has managed to bring audiences a truly inspiring film which has stood the test of time.”

Gervasi added:

“If you’d told me all those years ago at Sundance, when we had no buyers, that this movie would be released into theaters for the second time 13 years later I never would have believed you, but here we are. It truly is a miracle. This is all thanks to Robert and his extraordinary team at Utopia. They’re brilliant to work with because they’re filmmakers themselves, and their support and passion are unmatched. All Anvil and I can say is thank you!”

Anvil Premiere “Ghost Shadow” Music Video

Anvil have premiered a new video for their new song “Ghost Shadow.” This track is from the band’s new album “Impact Is Imminent,” whuch will be released on May 20.

Steve “Lips” Kudlow said the following about the song:

“‘Ghost Shadow’ is my sixth sense telling me I’m being watched. Could be Internet trolls or paranormal phenomenon. Either way, the song is heavy as fuck.”

He also added the following about the album:

“None of our previous albums blends music and lyrics into as tight a unit as ‘Impact Is Imminent’. Everything comes together homogeneously. As a result, the new material sounds monolithic, right down to the very last details, both in terms of rhythm and harmonies. In the past, our studio sessions were sometimes like a little like jumping in at the deep end, with us having to improvise a lot and making decisions at short notice. Working on ‘Impact Is Imminent’, not only was there plenty of time for the songwriting process in the run-up to the recordings, but I also had the leisure to put all my ideas to the acid test and work on them until they were perfect.”

Anvil’s Steve “Lips” Kudlow: “The New Album Is Completed And Mixed”

During a recent interview with The Metal Voice, Steve “Lips” Kudlow offered an update on the new Avil album. According to him, the effort “is completed and mixed.”

Kudlow said the following:

“The new album is completed and mixed and done. What can I say? I can’t wait till it comes out.

The whole thing is a bit weird and odd because we put out an album [‘Legal At Last’] and then never got to tour for it. So it’s, like, where is the tour for the last album already? So, what is the last album, just spinning our wheels? What was that? What happened? Now I’m in a position where I’m putting out another album, and I’m gonna have to actually try to push both albums. It’s, like, I don’t know. I’ve never been in a position like that.”

He also added:

“And then at the same time, while all this is going on, I got back from [recording in] Germany, of course, in October and have been writing songs since I got back. Because, of course, the last song I wrote was before I left — months before — so I had months of time off, not doing anything. So we started back in on it. We’re at [song] number 10 already — for the next album.”
