Thou Release Cover Of Alice In Chains’ “Them Bones”

Thou have released their cover of Alice In Chains‘ “Them Bones.” This track is from Magnetic Eye Records‘ new tribute to Alice In Chains‘ “Dirt.” That effort is titled “Dirt (Redux)” and it will be released on September 18. Bryan Funck commented:

“It seemed inevitable that we’d do another AIC song since their music was such a big part of Matthew‘s [Thudium, Thou guitarist] and my formative years. We had covered ‘No Excuses‘ some years ago, but it never quite got the reaction I thought it deserved, and our arrangement was a slowed-down and kind of left-field take on the song. With ‘Them Bones‘, we had a chance to tackle a song that more directly translated to our style. The song had been on my mind anyway — I had recently listened to a podcast that dissected all the tracks on ‘Dirt‘ and it really dawned on me that opening the album with ‘Them Bones‘ was such a bold and cool move. No count off, no intro, just straight into the insanity.”

These Beasts Release Cover Of Alice In Chains’ “Sickman” Featuring Pelican’s Dallas Thomas

These Beasts have released their cover of Alice In Chains‘ “Sickman.” This track features Pelican’s Dallas Thomas and it will appear on Magnetic Eye Records‘ upcoming tribute to Alice In Chains‘ “Dirt.” That effort, which is titled “Dirt (Redux),” is set to be released on September 18.

These Beasts commented:

“We have never really played a cover song as a band in the first place, much less recorded one to go an album. So listening to what might be one of Alice in Chains‘ most unconventional songs musically, ‘Sickman,’ at first we were a bit apprehensive, and we spent a couple of months just talking about how we should approach it before we even started learning it. We are proud of what we came up with to keep it sounding like These Beasts while still being able to deliver a version that hardcore Alice in Chains fans might enjoy.

‘Dirt‘ came out when I was a kid. I was really into ‘Facelift‘ and ‘Dirt‘ when they came out and enjoyed some Alice in Chains stuff after those albums, but I didn’t really keep up with them. Fast forward to new Alice in Chains and I really like what they are doing.

As a guitar player, I have always respected and admired what Jerry Cantrell has been doing. He is a great guitarist, much more than I am and that is the reason is why I asked my friend Dallas Thomas (Pelican, The Swan King, Asschapel), another guitar player who’s playing I admire, to come in and play some leads on the recording. He blasted out within a couple of hours what would have taken me days or weeks to figure out.

Going back to ‘Dirt‘ though, it had been many years since I had put on the album. So, as a band, we started taking in the whole album again. I didn’t realize as a kid how dark Layne‘s lyrics really were and after spending a lot of time digging into ‘Sickman‘ it did occasionally get me in a weird headspace sometimes trying to interpret those lyrics over and over in my head.”

Khemmis Share Cover Of Alice In Chains’ “Down In A Hole”

Khemmis have shared their cover of Alice In Chains‘ “Down In A Hole.” This track is from Magnetic Eye Records‘ upcoming tribute to Alice In Chains‘ “Dirt.” That effort, which is titled “Dirt (Redux),” is set to be released on September 18.

Khemmis’ Ben Hutcherson commented:

“I’ve loved this band since I discovered grunge and hard rock in my early teens. When we were presented with the opportunity to cover my favorite song from one of my favorite bands, I checked a pretty big item off of my bucket list. It’s an honor to take such a powerful piece of music and reimagine it through the creative lens of this band. We knew we wanted to stay true to parts of the song, particularly the chorus, but that we also needed to make it our own.

Alice In Chains has long been one of the most important bands in my life. Though they’re (understandably) associated with the Seattle grunge scene, their music carries a visceral heft that, for me, wasn’t present for the other bands of that music world. ‘Dirt‘ was, and remains, a landmark album of bleakness paired with incredible songwriting, and ‘Down In A Hole‘ was one of the first songs I learned to play on my dad’s old Takamine acoustic guitar back in ’98 or ’99.

The fact that a song like that works as well, if not better, on an acoustic guitar as on a distorted electric guitar is a testament to the power of what those four guys created together.”
