DJ Ashba (Sixx:A.M., Etc.) Says His Pyromantic Project Will Be A Mix Of “Four Different Genres Of Music”

During a recent appearance on “Vegas Junkeez”, DJ Ashba (Sixx:A.M., ex-Guns N’ Roses) offered a bit of an update on his Pyromantic project. According to him, the new music will be a mix of “four different genres.”

Ashba said the following:

“PYROMANTIC is just an awesome project where… basically, what it is is I’m taking four different genres of music — Latin, pop, rock and EDM — and putting it in a blender,” Ashba said. “I’m writing and producing the songs. I’m gonna play live with DJ. So it’s gonna be me on guitar, just full blown. And then we’re gonna feature different singers from different genres of music on the big screens and then videos and everything.

“This has been a two-year-long project. And it started off in the beginning, me and the singer from SIXX:A.M., James Michael, we had some time off and we started writing like we did. And it eventually evolved, and obviously, it went in a direction, and I pushed it really hard in a direction, and then James kind of got busy and went off [to do] his thing. But it’s evolved into this incredible thing over the last two years that’s just awesome. And to have congas and horns… And it’s very worldly. It’s designed to make the body move. It’s full-on dance stuff, but it’s great.”

He went on to say Pyromantic is his “number one priority” and that he is “so, so inspired” by the new music:

“This is everything I’ve ever wanted to do. It’s kind of like your whole career, you learn all these things, you work with all these people… PYROMANTIC is kind of just my labor of love — it’s something I truly wanna do for me — and it’s so gratifying to be able to be in a position…

“I’ve had an incredible career — thank god — but this new thing is just the next chapter. It’s really special, and it’s really a lot of fun. And it’s given me the freedom as a songwriter and a producer just to create any style… Basically, I don’t have to write for one vocalist or one voice… I can write not only for that, but multiple genres, as long as we keep it within kind of these wide walls that we call PYROMANTIC. It’s finally my vision unfiltered. So it’s really cool. And I’m excited. I think people are really gonna like it. It’s something completely different than I’ve ever done — something new. It’s very creative. And me being a creative person, it’s the perfect, perfect thing for me, I guess — the perfect project.”

He also added that he plans to tour with the project:

“We’re kind of at that stage right now where I’ve got a shit-ton of songs written. We’re putting the right singers on every song now. And it’s exciting. It’s two years’ worth of hard work. And now we’re starting to talk about, ‘What is the show gonna look like? What’s it gonna be?’ And me being a creative person, having an incredible creative team behind me, it’s gonna be a lot of fun to finally visually put something together.”

Sixx:A.M.’s James Michael & DJ Ashba Launch New Project Pyromantic

Sixx:A.M.’s James Michael and DJ Ashba have launched a new project called Pyromantic. The duo are currently finishing up a new album with plans to release it later this year. A video for the first single will be filmed in Las Vegas “in a couple of weeks.”

Michael commented on the group’s musical and lyrical direction:

“Lyrically, it is very deep, but it’s different from SIXX:A.M. in the sense that I think that we are choosing different subject matter to talk about. Sonically speaking, it’s heavy as fuck, but it’s also got these really, really pop melodies. So all I can say is I know you’re gonna dig it. It’s some of the most special stuff I’ve ever heard. We’ve been in this business a long time, and we’re very excited about that.”

Ashba added:

“When we sat down to do PYROMANTIC, the one big thing [we said to ourselves] was, ‘Let’s create something so new and fresh and create a sound for PYROMANTIC,’ so when you PYROMANTIC, it has a very distinct sound. And it’s pretty much… What we went after is a great blend of dance, rock and pop, and you kind of throw that in a blender, and I would say that’s pretty much what PYROMANTIC sounds like.”

Michael continued:

“It’s definitely very, very song driven. As artists, we’ve been driven by songs.”

Michael also discussed their touring plans:

“The neat thing about this music is that it’s not going to be limited to just a rock audience, so there is a much broader spectrum of audiences that we can play for and a much broader spectrum of bands that we can actually tour with. That’s very exciting to us.”

He also added the following about their touring lineup:

“That’s funny. Even with SIXX:A.M., we were kind of always undefined. We never had a drummer in that band until the very end. And I like that, because I think that as soon as you start establishing those things, you can get locked in very easily.” Ashba added: “Put it this way, we have a touring band already pretty much locked in, but we won’t announce that yet till we have a tour.”

As for Sixx:A.M., Ashba had the following to say:

“We’re basically on an indefinite hiatus. SIXX:A.M. has always been from day one — it’s been no secret — it’s always been a side project for all three of us. We did an extensive amount of touring and when we got off, we all felt like, ‘You know what? Let’s take a good break here and it gave everybody time to kind of go do their things, the separate things that we wanted to do.”

“It took a lot out of us making a double album. That was a lot of work, so we were pretty much drained from that. I mean, we had a lot of fun making those albums, but it was a ton of work. So, yeah, we just kind of decided, ‘Let’s take a little break,’ and blah blah blah, and kind of all went our own ways.”
