During a recent appearance on the “Mostly Yelling” podcast, Gorguts bassist Colin Marston discussed the band’s new album. According to him, the effort will have “elements of every record.”

Marston said the following:

“The new album is cool. In a way, it’s a bit of a letdown, because it’s not like this whole new sound. You’re not gonna get the ‘oh my God’ factor that ‘Obscura‘ had, where it’s just completely out of nowhere and sounds like nothing that’s ever been done before. It doesn’t have that, unfortunately. But you know, we’re all fucking middle-aged at this point.

But what it does have is elements of the sound of all the previous Gorguts records – and not put together in a cut and paste kind of way. It’s well integrated. The album has its own sound. But there’s aspects which have not been touched since ‘Considered Dead‘, and ‘Erosion‘, and ‘Obscura‘. There really are elements of every record in there.

There’s thrash beats, again. There’s tremolo picking, there’s harmonized fifths – stuff that you only got on the first two records. The song I wrote has just an actual honest to goodness slam in it. So that’s fun.

Okay, so one new element is the synths. So that’s never… we’ve never had that on the Gorguts records before. It’s not a huge… it doesn’t take up a ton of time on the record. But I do play synth on more than half the songs. Maybe all but two? My song doesn’t have any synths and the doom song doesn’t have any synths, but all the other ones do have moments.

And we touched some of those ambient territories before, especially with ‘Pleiades’ Dust‘ with effects on the bass. But this time around, I’m just doing that straight up with the analog synths. So that’s been very cool.

What else is there to say about it? It’s more of a death metal record than the last two that Kevin [Hufnagel, Gorguts guitarist] and I worked on, than ‘Pleiades’ Dust‘ and ‘Colored Sands‘. It’s more ripping, there’s more fast blasting. I guess ‘Colored Sands‘ had fast blasting too, but it was more in an atmospheric direction. And this new album has just more of the feeling of ‘From Wisdom To Hate‘ or something, where it just feels more death metal.”

He also added:

“Well, that’s kind of what Luc [Lemay, guitarist/vocalist] said. He’s like, I realized I have all these languages and I can just use them. Like, it doesn’t have to be a new thing every time. And I mean really, my only complaint is that I feel like this is the album we should have made, like, 13 years ago or something. Or I guess 13 years ago was when ‘Colored Sands‘ came out, right? That came out in 2013.

That was recorded in 2011. So, if that had just come out in 2011, then by 2013, I feel like we could have made this record. So I feel like it’s more than a decade overdue. I don’t know if it will… We’ll see if it has the same kind of impact that it would have had if we’d done it then. I feel like maybe it’ll have more [of an impact] because people kind of respond more when a band goes away for a while and then comes back. I hate that, but it’s true.”
