Otep Says Her Short Story Was Stolen For Netflix’s “Trigger Warning”

Otep Shamaya is taking action against the release of the new Netflix film “Trigger Warning” (out June 21). The singer says she did not receive credit for the movie, which was allegedly adapted from her 2009 short story “The Older Woman.”

Otep commented:

“This story was stolen by an ex friend of 15 years. Anyone who’s read my work has read THE OLDER WOMAN. This ex-friend & I were adapting it for film when he ghosted & finished writing it with another writer. We ever to mediation 12/20 & he refused to give me credit & @netflixfilm & @thunderroadpictures ignored my communications”

She continued:

“This is insane ‼️ THEY STOLE MY STORY‼️ I wrote & published a short story in 2009. I had a friend who was a screenwriter & we started adapting the story to film. Then he ghosted me, wrote it with another writer & sold it to thunderroad & Netflix 🤬 I entered mediation with my ex-friend of 15 yrs on 12/20 & showed all the emails, notes, etc but he refused to give me credit 🤬 The movie has been sitting for years. Now their releasing my stolen intellectual property 🤬 please share & tag them 🙏🏽 #OTEP ❤️‍🩹”

She then followed up with the following:

“YOU STOLE MY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. THIS MOVIE IS BASED ON MY SHORT STORY. ONE OF THE WRITER’S IS AN EX FRIEND WHO I WAS WORKING WITH TO ADAPT TO FILM. HE GHOSTED ME, FINISHED WITH ANOTHER WRITER & SOLD IT. I NOTIFIED BOTH #NETFLIX & TR BUT WAS IGNORED”

She also added:

“They even stole the “big reveal” almost word for word from my short story published in 2009 🤬 I knew this man for 15 years, considered him a brother, and he gaslit me claiming he could never get a film made with my name in it bcz I was a “nobody” 🤨 #otep 🤬”
