Magnetic Eye Records are planning to release two new Nine Inch Nails tribute albums. This includes a tribute to “The Downward Spiral“ called “The Downward Spiral Redux” and another tribute record called “The Best Of NIN Redux.” Fans can assist with the release via Kickstarter.

Magnetic Eye Records commented:

“At a moment when the world’s reliance on machines, algorithms and artificial intelligence has never been greater, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the emergence of a musical force whose blend of mechanized instrumentation and raw emotion was singular and revolutionary.

Nine Inch Nails arrived around the same time as grunge, but while there was cross-appeal, what they were creating was clearly and intentionally something else.

This is a band who came into existence just as Generation X was developing an awareness of itself within our culture, and was starting to question everything we’d been told growing up.

The cynical skepticism of that era came through in the music, with artists from Rage Against the Machine to Pearl Jam pushing back against what was acceptable to say and do in our society, and everything from the ideals of what major musicians should do with their fame to what people and corporations stood for were fair targets.

Nine Inch Nails was the singular, driven musical expression of Trent Reznor. The music he made as NIN has always ranged varyingly through infectious, furious, delicate, sexual, transgressive, uplifting, cautionary and hopeless. You could dig it whether you were thumping to Tears for Fears and New Order in the late 80s or roaring into the 90s with Alice in Chains and Soundgarden.

Trent didn’t always make broad, blunt statements about politics, materialism or repression (though he definitely did at times), but there was a consistently restless quality to his music. His frustration at the veneer of normalcy and acceptability that characterized modern popular music was palpable, and he seemed to search endlessly for seams to peel back and rip loose to expose what was underneath.

Of the band’s seminal breakthrough album, Spin magazine said this in 2024:

‘As The Downward Spiral turns 30 this year, it still stands as an act of artistic transgression against the limits of popular music. Pushing the boundaries of creative censorship, it is still considered Nine Inch Nails’ most daring and uncompromising album.’

The 60s was protests and mind expansion, the 70s was drifting and checking out, the 80s was new hope and slick commercialism, and the early 90s was realizing that everything we trusted might be full of shit.
