Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “Music In The Age Of COVID-19” series, the feature where I discuss the ongoing pandemic with various musicians. This time I have an interview with Dan Kert of Plastic Barricades.
METAL ANARCHY: How have you been holding up during the coronavirus pandemic?
KERT: Well, it has been tough on all of us, there’s no denying that. An emotional rollercoaster of a year. But it is December and we are still here. High hopes for 2021.
METAL ANARCHY: Have you been using your downtime to work on new music?
KERT: That’s more or less the only thing that could save us from it all really. We had an album to finish – and it is out now, released against all odds. We are quite proud of “Self-Theories” and hope it will help our listeners through this tough time.
METAL ANARCHY: What was the last show you played or attended before the shutdown?
KERT: We toured quite extensively when our debut album came out, but for the last two years we’ve been off stage and in the studio. Last gig we played was a cool show in Bristol. We were hoping to gig in support of the new album in 2020, but that never happened.
METAL ANARCHY: Are you planning to play any livestream concerts during this time?
KERT: Never say never – maybe a candlelit acoustic set is long overdue now :).
METAL ANARCHY: Do you think the live entertainment industry will ever recover?
KERT: It definitely will, but it will never be quite the same again. I also hope that when gigs are back both gig-goers and also gig promoters will appreciate what they have a bit more.
METAL ANARCHY: Lastly, is there anything fans can do to help your band or others that may be struggling during this time?
KERT: Bands consist of people. And people need to talk to other people. Many musicians live in isolation, because writing music is sometimes truly life-consuming and also overwhelming. So write your favorite local band a warm message on their social media – they will appreciate that. And maybe buy a t-shirt from them? That is always helpful. Our new album “Self-Theories” is out now and we are very grateful for all the support from all around the world – truly humbled by this!
