Metal Anarchy’s Music In The Age Of COVID-19 Series: Interview With Lunar

Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “Music In The Age Of COVID-19” series, the feature where I discuss the ongoing pandemic with various musicians. This time I have an interview with Alex Bosson of Lunar.

METAL ANARCHY: How have you been holding up during the coronavirus pandemic?

BOSSON: I’ve been doing okay. It’s been difficult for sure, as it has been for everyone. I had one tour cancelled with my other band (HELION PRIME), but I’ve been able to continue doing some session drumming work from my home studio.

METAL ANARCHY: Have you been using your downtime to work on new music?

BOSSON: Yes, I’ve certainly been doing that. Staying productive as much as possible. I think all of us have been working on tons of new stuff in this time. We’ve been working hard on LUNAR album #3. It’s still got a ways to go, but it’s incredibly exciting how it’s turning out already! I think we’ve collectively agreed already that it’s going to be our favorite Lunar album thus far.

And in between working on that, each of us individually have been staying busy with writing and recording new material. I have been doing session work as I mentioned, plus I have a new album coming out with HELION PRIME soon (October 5th). Balmore has been working on new stuff with his other bands, NOVAREIGN and JUDICATOR. And Ryan is working on a solo album as well. So we’ve all been using this time to work on lots of new music.

METAL ANARCHY: What was the last show you played or attended before the shutdown?

BOSSON: Let’s see… last show I played goes back to the end of a tour I did in August 2019. Last show I attended was seeing OPETH in Hollywood. That was at the beginning of March of 2020. We got to see them just like a week or two before California started locking stuff down.

METAL ANARCHY: Are you planning to play any livestream concerts during this time?

BOSSON: Unfortunately, I don’t think so. At least not in the near future. All of the Lunar members are pretty spread out and it would be difficult to do. I hope it’s something we can do in the future, but not anytime soon. We’re using this time to really focus on writing and recording album #3. Plus, for me personally, I’m about to have my 2nd child (literally any day now) and that’s going to take up a lot of my time and energy for a little bit.

METAL ANARCHY: Do you think the live entertainment industry will ever recover?

BOSSON: I do think it will recover. One way or another. It may not be the same as what we all knew it as before, but people want to see live music and always will. Artists want to perform and all the crew involved want to return to their jobs. I think everyone involved will fight to ensure it comes back and recovers as much as possible.

METAL ANARCHY: Lastly, is there anything fans can do to help your band or others that may be struggling during this time?

BOSSON: Thank you for asking this. It’s great that people want to help the struggling artists in this time. For us, the best things that can be done are to follow / like / subscribe to the social media pages and to buy music and merch. Being mostly independent, having to cover costs of doing a new album, not to mention normal expenses of living and supporting our families can be very difficult at any time, but during this pandemic, it’s made it even more difficult on so many people in this industry. So please, to anyone reading this; make sure you support the artists you love right now as much as you can. I just read yesterday that ANATHEMA has had to break up because of the strain all this has caused. And unfortunately, I don’t think they will be the last band to cease to exist because of this. But if we can continue to support these artists we love, maybe we can help prevent that from happening.

And if anyone orders from us, any orders through the Lunar Bandcamp page come directly from me and I’m happy to sign anything on request. The support is greatly appreciated. Thank you to Metal Anarchy for calling attention to this and trying to help us and all the bands and everyone throughout the music industry that are struggling right now.
