Metal Anarchy’s New Music Showcase: Exclusive Q&A With Tarah Who?

Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “new music showcase,” the feature where I introduce you to up and coming bands that readers of this site may find interesting. This time I have an exclusive Q&A with Tarah Who?.

METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your band:

TARAH WHO? CH : My name is Coralie Herve, I’m the drummer of Tarah Who?.

TGC: I am Tarah, the guitar player and singer of Tarah Who? I started writing songs when I was 18 years old, without having any particular plan in mind.I was used to play the drums and Bass guitar in bands since the age of 14 but I had never dared to do my own thing. I played many shows as a singer songwriter, acoustic act in Los Angeles. Everything started getting serious after I had recorded a demo of my songs, playing the drums and bass on all of my recordings. Producers and musicians hit me up. They wanted to help me record an album. That is when Tarah Who? really started in 2006. I started getting really into the whole band thing and played a lot of shows. Over the years, I gained confidence in knowing what I wanted as far as sounds and who I wanted to be surrounded by and work with. I met Coralie over a year ago now and Joey joined us about 7 months ago. It all sounds really fresh in writing or when we say it but we have gone through so much together, as a band, as friends and as musicians that it feels like we have been playing together for years. We are really comfortable with each other and we are all mature people. We have the same ambition so we are very motivated with every step we take. We can count on each other, like business partners but also like friends would. We know our limits and we respect each other, all of those aspects make our Tarah Who? solid. We all do our part to make this all happen.

JS : I am Joey the bassist and back up vocalist. I am the newest member of the band coming up on seven months now. We met back in April 2018 via Facebook messenger…

“Hi Joe, I am contacting you because I am looking for a bass player for my band Tarah Who? If you like what you hear hit me back. Have a good day! ” Tarah…

Random, it seemed strange and went unanswered for six whole days. The idea rolled around in my head enough and I decided I needed to listen to the songs. Two weeks later we left on a west coast tour and we have been constantly working ever since! Each experience seems better than the last.

METAL ANARCHY: Who are your main influences?

TARAH WHO?: CH : I’m a big Nightwish fan, a symphonic metal band, so I’ll say that this genre is my main influence. More generally, I’ll say Metal and Rock.

TGC: Lately, people have been describing us ” If Motörhead was fronted by Alanis Morissette” When I first heard this, I laughed really hard but I also thought, “NAILED IT” . It was really interesting to see that a few people have said the exact same thing in different States, even Coast! I grew up listening to Alanis Morissette, yet I had zero intention of sounding like her, I just really enjoyed her music and I felt really touched by her songwriting. When I started writing songs, I realized that I was not good in making up stories and in order for me to like something that I wrote, It had to be authentic. I had to have lived it and felt it. In that sense I think, people think that I “sound like” Alanis Morissette. The Storytelling.

Motörhead, came a few years later. I love love love Lemmy. I love his sound and his attitude. I discovered Lemmy along with The Distillers, Pantera, Rage Against The Machine etc.. so all of those loud, punk, fast paced bands, I was really into and totally still am. I love playing loud music and I like to play fast. Fast in a musical way.. Don’t imagine that we are shredders or hardcore heavy punk metal, you WILL be disappointed! But we like to stay upbeat and make people jump around and moshpit. 🙂

JS: Motorhead, Tool, Rush and Primus.

METAL ANARCHY: What is your latest release and why should readers of this site check it out?

TARAH WHO?: CH : Our upcoming EP called ‘’64 Women’’ will be release soon, I’m really excited about it !!! It’s the first one that I record with Tarah Who? so it’s kind of special. If you like a loud, heavy sound I’m sure you can find it in our songs.

TGC: “64 Women” is our upcoming EP. We recorded the drums at Thomas Lang’s studio in Thousand Oaks. It was a really fun experience to share this new ep with him. Then we brought the drum tracks to Jason Orme who plays the guitars for Alanis Morissette. Jason is a very talented musician, he comes up with great ideas and does not try to change anything. I got to play with his vintage guitars and what I call his spaceship (his pedal board) and he recorded the lead guitars. Then Matt Houdini from the rock band Lujuria joined us for the backing vocals session and we had a lot of fun then too. Matt came up with some really cool ideas as well and we are very happy with the outcome of it all.

This Ep is important to us because Joey and Coralie are on it. We can go on tour promoting this EP and the current line up is on it. We all work really hard on this last EP. Joey had barely joined the band and we went on tour together and then I asked him to re-track the Bass Parts so that we would have something all together.

“Numb Killer” is the first single that will be released very soon with a music video. It is a song that I wrote initially about terrorism, that I think could apply to the atrocities that keep happening because of guns and violence.

JS : Yes!!! The new EP “64 Women”. I can’t wait to get this out and into your ears!!! I am especially excited because this will officially be my first recording with Tarah Who? The most fun I had recording was screaming the backing group vocals for “Numb Killer”.

METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?

TARAH WHO?: CH : Have fun with us !!! We are kind of entertaining on stage and we like to give the best of us for people coming out to see us play. We just love to play and rock together, it’s the best !!!!

TGC: Like Coralie said, we are very entertaining, we like to get the fans going. Whether we have you come up on stage or we invite you to jump around with us. We definitely want you to have as much of a good time as we do. I write songs because I need to express myself, yes but I also hope to touch people. There is nothing more rewarding that a fan who tells you that they relate to your story. I believe that at different stages of our lives we all go through very similar stories and if our song can be your soundtrack during that time, It is amazing. When you come see us live, we want you to forget your worries! You are here, NOW, let us have fun! don’t be shy! We are going to have a great time!

JS: Its a touch of this and that, reminding you of the grunge years and the countless sub genres stretching to and beyond rock. Most importantly it is a breath of fresh air, original and meaningful. Every note played with a specific purpose and intention from dynamically soft to chaotically hard and that is evident in Tarah’s finger’s. I have had fingers bleed as well over time, however Tarah’s fingers continue to bleed upon constant use and driving strumming. Tarah drives Coralie and I to play harder and louder than ever before. We play hard, we play loud and we play with purpose!!!

METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see your band heading in 5 years?

TARAH WHO?: CH : Still playing music and rocking on stage !!! Hopefully people will still love our songs hahahaha !!!

TGC: Doing the same thing in much bigger venues and in front of much bigger crowds, headlining big Rock Festivals world wide. 🙂

JS: In five years we will have that recording studio/house we have been talking about in the van for years hahaha.
