28-year-old Danielle Uskiwich has passed away after getting kicked in the head by a crowd surfer during Sleep Theory’s May 16 set at Pointfest in St. Louis, MO. The injury was not the main cause of death, but it did lead to the discovery of another condition. For their part, Sleep Theory have commented on the situation, calling it “heartbreaking.”

Danielle’s cousin told KSDK the following:

“It was just a freak accident that happened, but as a family we’re kind of taking it as a blessing in disguise that if she hadn’t had this injury, she wouldn’t have been at the hospital when she had her stroke. She could have been driving or alone.”

Her mother also commented:

“I feel that I need to clear up some confusion about the series of events that happened with Danielle. Prior to the concert she was having headaches, the doctors believe the clots started forming at that time. The incident at the concert was actually a blessing in disguise to lead her to the hospital. The strokes were going to happen regardless, the concert gave her a fighting chance. Those strokes would’ve happened at any place at any time. I just don’t want the blame to placed where it don’t belong.”

Her best friend added:

“The family would really like everyone to know that it wasn’t the kick that ultimately killed her. The kick actually was kind of a blessing in disguise in kind of a weird way. The kick is what sent her to the hospital, and that is what showed that she already had an underlying issue, and without that kick, we wouldn’t have gotten to say goodbye to her.”

Sleep Theory issued a statement as well:

“We are deeply saddened to hear of Danielle Uskiwich’s passing.

Our hearts go out to her friends, family, fiancé, and everyone else who was fortunate enough to know her. What happened is heartbreaking, and we cannot imagine the pain her loved ones are feeling right now.

Over the last few days we have been thinking about Danielle and those closest to her. Please join us in sending them all our love, thoughts, and prayers during this extremely difficult time.
