Vocalist Jake Wolf commented:
“Just over a decade ago we were showing up to our first studio experience after recording The Fantasy Effect on our own.
Needless to say, it was an overwhelming feeling being at the same studio where many musicians we looked up to had been and where some timeless metal records were recorded.
I was a little too excited and wound up completely blowing my voice out the first night of vocal tracking, which led to months of me trying to re-figure out my vocals and ended with a general negative feeling of my performance on the album.
Aside from that, it was really incredible seeing the progression of recording happening in real time. These were some of the first songs I’d had a major hand in helping write instrumentally, so it was very surreal seeing it come to life.
We were hoping to really push the boundaries with the mix of this record and at the time, the record took more of a raw/organic direction, aside from the drums being sound replaced. There wasn’t any tight, glitchy editing like we had written in the songs pre-production, something we always wanted and had felt like was missing listening back.
There also was an entire song that wasn’t quite ready in time that we always wanted to finish up and release. We decided to keep its working title as a fun nod to the old days.
Exist will be our last redux.
Instrumentals currently on bandcamp, streaming soon.
The time is now.”
He also added:
“Also, for those asking why just an EP and not the entire record
We decided to revamp the songs that were either primarily or entirely written/constructed by myself and Pat [Patrick Somoulay, guitars.]
Charles [Caswell, ex-guitarist] absolutely crushed on Exist and gave an incredible performance. He wrote the songs My Cancer, Candle, This House, Stories Through Storms and Exist entirely on his own instrumentally.
I’ll also add that he did a heavy majority of the guitar recording on the original record, all of the bass and even helped me record vocals at his house after my voice had given out in the studio.
At most, all I did was some drumming/structure adjustments here and there if any at all, mostly it was just minor drum and minute structure changes to the track This House, as that song was really important to both of us.
And while we’d absolutely love and be happy to give those tracks a new spotlight, it isn’t something we’d ever do without Charles to record his parts or against his wishes.”
