Interview: Kirk Windstein Talks EYE AM, Crowbar, Down, Etc.

I was recently given the opportunity to interview Kirk Windstein about his various projects. The chat, which can be found below, covers his latest band EYE AM, as well as Crowbar, Down, Kingdom Of Sorrow, and his solo work.

METAL ANARCHY: First Of all, how did EYE AM come together?

WINDSTEIN: Actually, Andrew Spaulding started it. He is a good friend and he sold merch for Type O for years so he connected us all. He always talked about it. He got his own record label to be able to start this project which has been a dream for him.

METAL ANARCHY: How does this project compare to yours and your bandmates’ other bands (Crowbar, Type O Negative, etc.)?

WINDSTEIN: Well, I can’t really compare it. We all have our own style but I think we put our musical influences into this. It does not sound like our own personal bands.

METAL ANARCHY: Your first single, “Dreams Always Die With The Sun,” is killer! Is this track a good representation of the material that will appear on your debut album?

WINDSTEIN: Our second writing session really brought out a lot more. The second single I would say represents the sound more.

METAL ANARCHY: Your next single, “Cryptomnesia,” will be coming out in November. What would you like to tell readers about that track?

WINDSTEIN: As I said, we really think we found our sound when we did this song. It’s a better representation.

METAL ANARCHY: I think it’s cool EYE AM are giving fans a chance to enter a contest to hang out the band in New Orleans. Who came up with that idea?

WINDSTEIN: Andrew did. He thought it was a cool idea.

METAL ANARCHY: Are you planning any live shows with this project?

WINDSTEIN: Hopefully at some point. We need to finish it first lol. I honestly think that once it’s done we are all going to want to do shows.

METAL ANARCHY: Aside from EYE AM, I also wanted to ask about some of your other projects. First of all, you’re currently on road with Crowbar. What can fans expect from these shows?

WINDSTEIN: We are currently hitting the East Coast right now. We are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Self-titled album so expect some oldies and a mix of new and other albums.

METAL ANARCHY: Have Crowbar been working on material for a follow-up to “Zero And Below”?

WINDSTEIN: We will be going back into the studio as soon as we can. We have been touring so much. There will definitely be another Crowbar album.

METAL ANARCHY: I also wanted to ask about Down’s current status. I know everyone is busy with other projects at the moment, but is the band still working on a new covers EP?

WINDSTEIN: We talked about doing covers but I think we are probably just gonna work on new music.

METAL ANARCHY: So is it safe to say fans can expect new original music and live shows from Down at some point?

WINDSTEIN: Yes. Of course everyone knows that Phillip is busy with Pantera but we have all talked about it. He wants Pepper, Jimmy, Pat and myself to start coming up with some ideas.

METAL ANARCHY: Another one of your projects that I enjoyed was Kingdom Of Sorrow. Is there any chance of that band making a return in the future?

WINDSTEIN: Jamey Jasta and I have talked about it but we are always busy doing other things but I think we will do another one in the near future.

METAL ANARCHY: Lastly, are you planning to work on a follow-up to your solo album “Dream In Motion”?

WINDSTEIN: My second solo album is complete and I’m expecting to release it in the spring of 2024.
