Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “new music showcase,” the feature where I introduce you to bands that readers of this site may find interesting. This time I have an exclusive Q&A with Hyperspace.
METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your band:
HYPERSPACE: Hyperspace, comprised of vocalist/guitarist Jason Kochis, drummer Ryan Paul, and bassist Kayvan Sarikhani, is an energetic Atlanta based Nerdy Pop Punk band who play songs about love and about their love of things geeky. It’s always difficult to describe our songs to people who aren’t musicians, so we typically say it’s a blend of Green Day and Weezer. Or at least it was in the beginning. Sometimes we play pretty fast and heavy punk rock and other times we might come off an indie rock sound. Everyone in the band brings their own style and has their own influences, so naturally the sound progresses over time.
METAL ANARCHY: Who are your main influences?
HYPERSPACE: Each bandmember has their own influences that creep in, but we all collectively connected through the music of Nerf Herder, Weezer, Green Day, Nirvana, FigDish, NOFX, Sugarcult, The Ramones, Superdrag, The Misfits, Fountains of Wayne, Primus, Black Sabbath, Hot Water Music, Matthew Sweet, and even new bands like The Linda Lindas, Band-Maid, and Skating Polly.
METAL ANARCHY: What is your latest release and why should readers of this site check it out?
HYPERSPACE: Hyperspace has been a thing for 11 years; throughout that time, we’ve released four studio albums and most recently a vinyl/cassette/digital record titled “Retrograde”. It was released exclusively on 180 gram orange vinyl and is limited to only 100 copies. The new album is really a celebration of each era of the band and its’ previous members; the record is a collection of favorite songs from each of the previous released but completely remixed and remastered by Will Borza (Andrew W.K., Deftones, Foster The People). We joke that it’s our greatest hits record, but really it serves as a great “first date” with the band!
METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?
HYPERSPACE: To get your faces melted off by our catchy songs. We make each performance high energy and memorable to leave smiles on the audiences faces.
METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see your band heading in 5 years?
HYPERSPACE: We never stop playing shows! Right now, we’re currently booking and scheduling shows for 2023. We’re always going to continue to make music, release records, and play shows; that being said, we’re also exploring other opportunities such as maybe having our songs in a video game or some kind of film. One priority right now is seeing what labels are out there and what they might have to offer.
