Metal Anarchy’s New Music Showcase: Exclusive Q&A With Corners Of Sanctuary

Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “new music showcase,” the feature where I introduce you to bands that readers of this site may find interesting. This time I have an exclusive Q&A with Mick Michaels of Corners Of Sanctuary.

METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your band:

MICHAELS: Corners of Sanctuary formed in 2011. We wanted to create music that was from our roots, something that we wanted to hear. Our goal was to bring back that classic, traditional Metal sound. We definitely feel we have tapped into that niche group of Metalheads who feel the same way as we do. The music has taken on the moniker as the “New Wave of Traditional American Heavy Metal”…however, we like to call it the “Modern Sound of Classic Heavy Metal.” But really at its core, it Heavy Metal.

METAL ANARCHY: Who are your main influences?

MICHAELS: As a band, Corners of Sanctuary has been inspired by Judas Priest, early Accept, KISS, Queensrÿche, Savatage, Black Sabbath and Dio…plus there have been so many local acts over the years that have made an impact on us as well. I think when you really think about it, influences and inspiration come down to the same denominators…everything and everyone leave some mark, big or small, and that mark is imprinted onto us. So at times, ideas and creativity pop up and we may not even know where they actually originated from…and that’s pretty cool when you come to think about.

METAL ANARCHY: What is your latest release and why should readers of this site check it out?

MICHAELS: Corners of Sanctuary currently has two releases out right now; “Defying” is our Def Leppard tribute EP. This is our very ever set of cover songs. It was a big step for us but we are very excited about how the project turned out. We made these songs our own so that we could be as honest with them as possible while staying true to the essence of them. Def Leppard tracks are very iconic so there is a lot involved with covering songs such as these. It was definitely an eye opening experience for us. We had a load of fun doing it.

We also released our second best of compilation called “Metal Never Dies.” 20 songs spanning the bands 11 year career so far. This collection is definitely a great cross sectional view of Corners of Sanctuary and its back catalog. Many of the songs received new recordings, new mixes and masters. There are also new brand new tracks included…20 songs and over and hour and a half of music.

METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?

MICHAELS: They can expect to hear hard driving Heavy Metal…a lot of punch. We let the music doing the overall talking. We save the glitter and frills for other bands to take care. It’s all about the music for us and we want to present that to the audience the best way we know how…we just get up there and play it loud.

METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see your band heading in 5 years?

MICHAELS: Making more music I’m sure…. We are already working on things for 2023 and 2024 so I am sure we will still be doing what we are doing now even then. However, given the events over the last two years, we have come to realize that we must live in the now and make the most of every moment…things can change in an instant and tomorrow may never come. So we are living for today and for what we can achieve and make happen with that day.

Thanks so much for talking with me – it was a pleasure. All my best…COSnROLL\m/\m/
