Metal Anarchy’s New Music Showcase: Exclusive Q&A With Johnny Stanec

Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “new music showcase,” the feature where I introduce you to artists that readers of this site may find interesting. This time I have an exclusive Q&A with Johnny Stanec.

METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your band:

STANEC: I’m a singer-songwriter from Youngstown, OH. I started making solo records when my band wasn’t busy and after we called it quits in 2018 I started focusing solely on my own music. It’s a mix of Americana-inspired rock and the sounds of the 90s Britpop movement. Layered production and harmonies, acoustic and electric guitars, slow and fast rhythms, etc. On record I record all the parts myself. I’ve done a lot of shows over the years and I have a pretty good back catalog to discover.

METAL ANARCHY: Who are your main influences?

STANEC: Mostly songwriter types like Elliott Smith, Noel Gallagher, John Lennon, etc. I like music with a strong lyrics and a memorable vocal hook.

METAL ANARCHY: What is your latest release and why should readers of this site check it out?

STANEC: Well, I’m not sure your readers will check me out. But I grew up listening to a lot of punk bands, which isn’t probably all that evident in my music, but even back then I needed a break from my usual tastes. So, maybe your readers, who are listening to a lot of metal bands, might like something different from their norm. And anyway, nowadays anyone can listen to anything. Whatever makes you happy. So to your readers, give it a try, you might like what I do. If you’re interested in clever lyrics and harmonies, check it out.

METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?

STANEC: I do a lot of acoustic shows these days. Covid also made it tough to do much, so lately it’s just me and some songs and my guitar. It’s intimate and somewhat intense at times, but those who come get a great show.

METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see your band heading in 5 years?

STANEC: My sound is always expanding. I like challenging myself and doing different things, so I can see myself pushing my own style in any number of directions. I’m never satisfied and I see my songs as a way to learn to be better. Every recording is an opportunity to do something new.
