Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “new music showcase,” the feature where I introduce you to bands that readers of this site may find interesting. This time I have an exclusive Q&A with Sam Christie of Shanghai Treason.
METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your band:
CHRISTIE: Hi Metal Anarchy. We’re Shanghai Treason, cheeky Yorkshiremen, banjo punks, with a fist full of beer soaked tunes perfect for sweaty gigs in dive bars or dancing in the mud in ya wellies at the festival, we play Celtic Punk inspired rock with a Northern twist. We’re a fairly new band who are just gearing up for the release of our debut album.
METAL ANARCHY: Who are your main influences?
CHRISTIE: I guess the lazy answer would be Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys & The Pogues but we’re all big fans of loud music of most genres, some of the bands that get the most airtime on the tour bus are acts like Hot Water Music, Propagandhi, Rancid, Joe Strummer, Pixies, The Menzingers, The Interrupters, Red City Radio, The Bronx & The Lawrence Arms… hey… if it bangs it bangs and we’re probably into it. We’re also influenced a lot by Yorkshire itself, our own life experiences and current events. The worlds a bit of a mess isn’t it, can be hard on folk to say the least… lots to write about.
METAL ANARCHY: What is your latest release and why should readers of this site check it out?
CHRISTIE: We’ve put out 3 tracks from our upcoming debut album this year, ‘Emerald Causeway’, ‘Wildfird Ft Dan Booth’ (Ferocious Dog) & ‘On The Ropes’, we’ve just been teasing at what’s to come really, we’re now planning for our album to be released around the time of our UK Tour with The Rumjacks in Jan/Feb 2022. I guess if people are into the genre they will find themselves in familiar territory quickly with our music but we’re trying to push things forward in our own direction, Come have a butchers.
METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?
CHRISTIE: Punky party music played fast and loose, let us soundtrack your boozy weekend. .
METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see your band heading in 5 years?
CHRISTIE: Hey if we’re still a band in 5 years that’s a little victory in itself. I like to think we will be and that we’ll have 2 or 3 albums under our belt having done some great tour supports, really striking out on our own as a headline act. Get onboard and enjoy the ride with us. It’s going to be a wild one that’s for sure.
